Kerem Shalom sits at the intersection of Gaza, Egypt and Israel, which controls the gateway. The Israeli military later clarified that the pause would be limited and that there would be “no cessation of fighting in the southern Gaza Strip.”“The fighting in Rafah is continuing,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman, said on social media. Distributing that aid, Israeli officials said, would be contingent on relief agencies, on whom they called to pick up the supplies. Aid groups have said that the Israeli military’s activity in southern Gaza has made distributing aid nearly impossible. Data compiled by the U.N. show that the number of aid trucks entering southern Gaza remains well below the levels before the incursion in Rafah.

Jerusalem CNN —The Israeli military has announced a “tactical pause” of military activity along a route in southern Gaza to allow aid to be distributed but stressed that there would be no let up in fighting in and around Rafah in southern Gaza. A bottleneck of aid has built up at Kerem Shalom amid airstrikes and fighting in much of southern Gaza. It will be run in coordination with international organizations, it said, as part of efforts to increase volumes of aid reaching Gaza. Egyptian trucks carrying humanitarian aid make their way to the Gaza Strip at the Kerem Shalom crossing on May 30, 2024. Spain’s Lamine Yamal made history on Saturday by becoming the youngest player to appear at a men’s European Championship when he took to the field against Croatia at Euro 2024. CNN —The Biden administration on Friday imposed sanctions on an Israeli group for disrupting humanitarian convoys headed to Gaza. The sanctions against the organization are the latest punitive measure taken under an executive order targeting those perpetrating violence in the West Bank. “They also have damaged aid trucks and dumped life-saving humanitarian aid onto the road. President Joe Biden signed an executive order earlier this year allowing sanctions on those causing West Bank violence. The order has been used to roll out sanctions on Israeli settlers attacking Palestinians in recent months.

Apple just formed a bullish golden cross chart pattern

The maker of iPhones and iPads has formed a "golden cross," a technical indicator signaling when a stock's moving average over the last 50 days rises above the same moving average tracking the last 200 days. It's the first time since March that Apple's 50-day moving average trades above its 200-day counterpart. Despite the outperformance, Apple shares have advanced less than 11% this year, underperforming both the broad S & P 500 and technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite . While the golden cross can indicate upside momentum, Wall Street expects a correction ahead. Like so many speculative growth ETFs and stocks, the S & P SPDR Biotech (XBI) ETF is nowhere close to its former all-time high from early 2021. Even though the ETF now is up considerably from that point, many traders still have wanted nothing to do with it. We can understand why, especially when so many other stocks surpassed their respective former highs many months ago. CNN —Shipwreck hunters have found the vessel Quest — once captained by renowned Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton — largely intact on the ocean floor, 15 nautical miles off the coast of Canada, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society has announced. Quest carries not only the history of his voyages, but potentially artifacts from expeditions that continued until 1962, when the vessel sank, experts say. Quest sank on May 5, 1962, after being crushed by ice in the Labrador Sea off of Canada, according to the news release. Brisbane, Australia CNN —An Australian billionaire is offering to build a secure gate system on the Israel-Gaza border that he says could allow 10,000 metric tons of food aid to be delivered each day to starving Palestinians. Nearly 30 asylum seekers are stuck in the United Nations-controlled buffer zone between the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus and the internationally recognized south amid a crackdown by the Cypriot authorities on undocumented migration following a steep uptick in Syrians arriving from Lebanon. The groups — 13 people from Syria and 14 from elsewhere in the Middle East, plus Africa and Asia — are in different locations in the buffer zone, which extends about 112 miles across Cyprus, a Mediterranean nation that is a member of the European Union, and bisects the capital, Nicosia. They arrived in the area, known as the Green Line, on foot from the occupied north. If the migrants return to the north, an area that covers about a third of the island and is recognized only by Turkey, they face deportation, because the administration there has no legal infrastructure for providing asylum. Crossing into the buffer zone from the occupied north would also constitute a crime of trespassing under that administration and would be likely to lead to their deportation.

Costa Rica boasts 5% of the world's biodiversity, with white sand beaches and lush jungles to explore — a huge draw for us as animal lovers. I suggest a dedicated night walk tour, which usually begin at dusk, for a chance to see sloths and other creatures, rather than a gimmicky coffee and chocolate tour offered by many locations.

Hunter Biden’s legal case is, at its root, a story about the toxic, careless choices made by a drug addict. It’s about the fact that addicts weave tragedy into their own lives and into the lives of those around them. Addicts don’t think about other people; they think about themselves. And they lie — that’s how they supply their addiction. He had to watch his daughter take the stand and testify, something that’s intimidating, even frightening, under any circumstances.

I know we’ll want to talk about the Hunter Biden trial. The long and short of it is that Texan Latinos, once reliably Democratic, are turning against Joe Biden on account of the border chaos. Or does it merely confirm that the administration sat on its hands for more than three years while the crisis got worse? Gail Collins: Bret, there are parts of Texas that are the natural first destinations for people crossing the border illegally. The Biden administration is considering a proposal to protect undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation and allow them to work in the country legally, according to four officials with knowledge of the discussions. Any such program could also provide some spouses an easier route to obtain U.S. citizenship. The proposal comes as President Biden has moved to address political liabilities in his immigration policy in recent days. Last week, he moved to bar asylum for migrants crossing into the United States as part of an effort to toughen border enforcement, eliciting criticism from members of his own party. And now, a move to protect undocumented immigrants in the United States could help Mr. Biden address some of the fierce resistance that order elicited and shore up support among immigrant advocates, Latino voters and his progressive base.
