Afghanistan posted 284 after half-centuries from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil, before bowling out England for 215 to claim just their second victory at a World Cup. We're not too concerned, it's just a game that we've lost," Rashid told reporters. "We know we've got tough competition coming up, but I'm confident we can play really well as a unit moving forward. "You are going to have games where players are out of form but I do believe we've got the squad, we've got the team and we've got the mentality to still be hungry." England, who face South Africa in Mumbai on Saturday, are fifth in the standings with one win from three matches.

Half-centuries by Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis helped Australia chase down the target with nearly 15 overs to spare, handing Sri Lanka a five-wicket defeat, their third straight loss at the tournament. "Despite our promising start, we deeply regret not being able to sustain it, resulting in us being limited to a score of 209 runs," Nissanka told reporters on Monday. "The opposition's bowlers consistently hit good areas during the middle overs, which created a challenging situation for our batsmen. "I'm hopeful that I can contribute significantly by scoring a substantial number of runs and playing substantial innings in the upcoming matches," Nissanka said. Buttler said the Afghanistan result was a "big setback". "We’ve got to show a lot of character, a lot of resilience within the team and most of all a lot of belief. Buttler conceded the England brain trust had misread the pitch and the conditions, retaining an extra seamer after seeing India beat Afghanistan at the same Arun Jaitley Stadium last week with a similar attack. "The conditions didn’t play quite as we thought they would ... The wicket didn’t play exactly how we thought it would play and the dew didn’t come in as much as we thought as well."

Afghanistan posted 284 after half centuries from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil, before bowling out England for 215 to claim just their second victory at a World Cup - eight years after their maiden win over Scotland in 2015. "This is significant, certainly in the manner and by the margin as well," Trott told reporters on Sunday. "What Afghanistan cricket can achieve, hopefully this will be the sort of kick-start." Women's sport in Afghanistan has also suffered since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. "It's not just cricket that the guys are playing for," Trott said.

CNN —Flag football is officially one of five new sports added to the Olympic program for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. On Monday in Mumbai at the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session, it was announced that flag football, baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash would be included at the Games. It will be the first time that flag football and squash will be in an Olympic Games. Cricket was included in the Paris Olympics in 1900, while lacrosse was included at St. Louis 1904 and London 1908. Our Olympic sport program, in its entirety, reflects this belief,” the chairperson of the 2028 Games’ organizing committee, Casey Wasserman, said.

The Philadelphia Phillies slugger said it would be a dream to play for Team USA when baseball returns for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. He would be 10 years into the contract and 35 years old, should he get the chance to play for Team USA in LA. The WBC is operated by MLB and takes place during spring training, meaning players do not need to miss regular season games to participate. Cricket, flag football, softball, lacrosse and squash also were confirmed Monday by the International Olympic Committee to be held at the Los Angeles Games. Phillies manager Rob Thomson, raised in Corunna, Ontario, was part of the Canadian squad that competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when baseball was a demonstration sport.

India then returned to lay bare Pakistan's bowling frailties and romped home with nearly 20 overs to spare in the lop-sided blockbuster. "I just think we were a little bit timid tonight with our overall performance," Arthur told reporters after the match. "I did think we could probably have taken on the Indian spinners just a little bit more...But again, they were building and building nicely. LUCKNOW, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Australia are struggling to read the wickets at the World Cup in India and are adapting to the conditions "on the fly", skipper Pat Cummins said on Sunday as the five-times champions look for their first win of the tournament. Australia are ninth in the standings after they were beaten by India and South Africa in Chennai and Lucknow, respectively. But Cummins said playing a T20 game was very different from the one-day international format. "It's a tricky one, ODI cricket compared to T20s - played over half the game in daylight, half at night," Cummins told reporters. Australia have lost their last four World Cup games stretching back to the 2019 edition.

"He was asking me the secret behind my big sixes, and if it had anything to do with the bat I use," Rohit told Pandya. The elegant right-hander overtook West Indian Chris Gayle's record of 553 sixes in international cricket heading into the match against Pakistan. After Saturday's match, Rohit also became only the third batter - after Gayle and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi - to smash 300 sixes in one-day internationals. "I have been trying to bat like this in the last two years," Rohit said of his batting approach in the World Cup. His 11 sixes from three matches in the ongoing World Cup is second only to Sri Lankan Kusal Mendis' 14 from two matches.

CNN —The pantheon of great sporting upsets gained another monument on Sunday as Afghanistan roundly defeated England by 69 runs at the ICC Cricket World Cup in Delhi, India. It was an upset of immense proportions – Afghanistan had only ever won one World Cup match in its entire history while England is the defending world champion, still basking in the glow of a golden era that has bestowed mythical status on much of its team. But England sputtered from the very start as some loose bowling allowed Afghanistan to build an impressive platform, putting on more than 100 runs without losing a wicket. Defeating England following the earthquake added another dimension to Afghanistan’s historic victory, one which captain Rashid Khan hoped will give Afghans a “little bit of smile on their faces,” he said, per ESPN Cricinfo. After already losing to New Zealand, this shock defeat leaves England in real danger of crashing out the World Cup in the group stages, giving Saturday’s game against South Africa even more importance.

Oct 15 (Reuters) - Australian opener Travis Head has returned to batting for the first time since he fractured his left hand and could join the World Cup squad on Friday, Cricket Australia said on Sunday. Head broke his finger in a one-day international against South Africa last month but was included in the 15-man World Cup squad as selectors hoped he would be fit in time for the latter stages of the tournament. "It's coming along well, and probably better than we hoped," Head told cricket.com.au. Head says there was stiffness having had a splint for four weeks but was able to bat and play some shots. CNN —Fans packed inside the enormous Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India to watch India take on Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on Saturday. And in front of a sea of blue India shirts, punctuated by flashes of green, orange and white as people waved India flags, the home team secured a thumping seven-wicket victory over Pakistan. Often described as one of the greatest sporting grudge matches in the world, an India-Pakistan cricket match is always bound up in the geopolitical faultlines that separate the two nations. The two teams had not played each other for seven years on Indian soil, and Pakistan had never defeated India at a men’s World Cup. Led by a rampaging Rohit Sharma, who starred with 86 off 63 balls, India responded with ease, reaching Pakistan’s total with 117 balls to spare.
