Beijing Reuters —China will “significantly increase” government debt issuance to offer subsidies to people with low incomes, support the property market and replenish state banks’ capital as it pushes to revive sputtering economic growth. “There is still relatively big room for China to issue debt,” he said. Reuters reported last month that China plans to issue special sovereign bonds worth about 2 trillion yuan ($284.43 billion) this year as part of fresh fiscal stimulus. Separately, Bloomberg News reported that China is also considering injecting up to 1 trillion yuan ($142 billion) of capital into its biggest state banks to increase their capacity to support the economy, primarily by issuing new sovereign bonds. Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, whose 39 stores in China have felt the spillovers from the property crisis, urged Beijing on Thursday to deploy further stimulus.

Dublin-based Field of Vision has produced a handheld, haptic feedback device that it says can help blind and partially sighted fans not just hear, but “feel” the action, enhancing the live experience. “The main feedback we’ve gotten (about the device) has been that it actually makes them feel like they’re part of the game and they’re experiencing it with everyone else,” Field of Vision co-founder David Deneher told CNN. A blind fan tests out the Field of Vision device. (Left to right) Tim Farrelly, Omar Salem and David Deneher developed the Field of Vision idea during the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that a test run with the Field Of Vision tablet added new levels of context to proceedings on the pitch.

Hong Kong CNN —Global investors went wild during China’s just-concluded Golden Week holiday by snapping up “everything” related to the country. But that optimism didn’t extend to shoppers and travelers in the world’s second-largest economy itself. “Low tourism spending per head and subdued services prices highlighted still weak domestic demand and continued consumption downgrading,” they said. Goldman Sachs added that anecdotal evidence indicates hotel prices and airfares during the holiday were lower than year-ago levels. According to official data, cross-border travel rose by about 26% to 13 million trips, compared with last year’s holiday period.

CNN —Prospective homebuyers waiting on the sidelines for a further drop in mortgage rates received unwelcome news on Thursday. The average rate on a standard, 30-year fixed mortgage was 6.32% in the week ending October 10, mortgage financing provider Freddie Mac said Thursday. It was the largest one-week increase in mortgage rates since April and the second straight week rates jumped higher after falling to a two-year low last month. Soon after, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to its lowest since September 2022 at 6.08%. The recent bounce in mortgage rates underscores the uneven path toward greater home affordability.

Ikea revenue falls after it lowered prices

New York CNN —Last year, Ikea slashed prices on roughly 2,000 products to give inflation-weary customers a break. Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer, said that it doesn’t have any regrets about prioritizing “lowering the prices” in a $2 billion discount initiative at all of its stores globally. Like its rivals, Ikea gradually hiked prices since the peak of Covid-19 in 2020 as the costs of materials and transport rose. The company’s major discount program last year cut prices on several of its most popular items, like its Billy bookcase. Ikea sold 1.2 billion meatballs for the year, with a company spokesperson telling CNN that it also sold more meals at its cafés.

While Harris has gained ground on stewardship of the economy, Trump still leads in most surveys about the issue, which frequently ranks as the top concern for voters. The Harris campaign and Democratic allies believe she must erode that advantage and at least fight it to a draw. Tim Walz, argued in the recent debate that Trump’s economy was weak even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The economic issue is still Trump’s core advantage and one of the only reasons this race is as close as it is.”Still, Harris is performing better than Biden did on the economy against Trump. “People almost always say ‘I hate him but,’ or ‘I like him and’ — ‘but he did a good job on the economy,’ ‘the economy is better under him,’” she said.

Former President Donald Trump did send coronavirus testing devices to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the height of the pandemic, the Kremlin confirmed Wednesday. The book claims that Trump secretly sent Abbott Covid-19 testing devices to Putin when the machines were in short supply. Peskov also denied Woodward's claim that Trump and Putin have spoken on the telephone several times since Trump left office. Trump has repeatedly said he could settle the war between Russia and Ukraine in one day if he’s elected president again. Trump has referred to Putin as “very savvy” and a “strong man,” and praised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “genius.”

The relationship between Trump and Putin has long been a source of controversy. AdvertisementWith only a month to go before the presidential election, Donald Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again come under the spotlight. In a forthcoming book, journalist Bob Woodward says that the former president and Putin have a closer friendship than previously known. The Ukraine war has already roiled markets for food, oil, gas, and other products, and wider conflict could have an even more devastating impact. If Russian President Vladimir Putin is victorious in Ukraine, it may embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to invade Taiwan.

Wild swings in mortgage rates discouraged almost everyone from venturing out into the market. As I wrote earlier this year, a gummed-up housing market — the Ice Age I was talking about — is good for nobody. When mortgage rates hit multidecade lows during the pandemic, millions of people were able to snag or refinance their way into cheaper monthly costs. That'd be within spitting distance of what the experts at John Burns Research and Consulting, a housing-research firm, call the "magic mortgage rate." In other words, trying to predict mortgage rates — and buying or selling a home accordingly — is a fool's errand.

CNN —Covid-19 could be a powerful risk factor for heart attacks and strokes for as long as three years after an infection, a large new study suggests. What’s more, for people who needed to be hospitalized, Covid appeared to be as potent a risk factor for future heart attacks and strokes as diabetes or peripheral artery disease, or PAD. A finding unique to Covid-19The elevated heart risks from infection did not appear to diminish over time, the study found. People who were hospitalized for Covid but who were also taking low-dose aspirin had no increase in the likelihood of a subsequent heart attack or stroke. “If you’ve had Covid, we have to be especially attentive to making sure that we’re doing everything possible to lower your cardiovascular risk,” Hazen said.

Spotify's HR chief told Raconteur that the company will maintain its work-from-anywhere policy. Spotify's latest reaffirmation of its WFA policy bucks the current trend of companies pushing to get employees in the office more days a week. Many executives and leaders have attributed their RTO mandates to increased productivity and collaboration when employees work together in the office. "Over time, this drawback could dramatically undermine the character and culture you want to promote in your company," Dimon added.

Key swing states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are still experiencing a high volume of mail-in and absentee voting. In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

AdvertisementLike Woodman, millions of Americans travel abroad for medical procedures each year, saving anywhere from 40% to 90% on the services they receive. Medical tourism comes with risks; the American Medical Association recommends going only to medical facilities recognized by international accrediting bodies and following up testing with care at home. It's unclear, though, how many medical tourists visit accredited facilities, and there's still the question of whether all these tests are useful for someone who is seemingly in good health.
