Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the third Republican presidential debate, held in Miami on Wednesday night. The debate didn’t answer the question of whether she can really cut into DeSantis’s more conservative bloc of support. He deserves praise for his substantive, competent answers, but there’s not much of a market for that in the Republican primaries. In a debate dominated by a neoconservative revival, Ramaswamy — in both style and substance — was the only Trumpist on the stage. primary voters relished his attacks on the Republican National Committee and the debate moderators.

It was the undercard that underwhelmed. The third straight Republican presidential debate that former President Donald J. Trump has skipped — choosing instead to rally with supporters a few miles away — represented a critical and shrinking chance for his rivals to close his chasm of a polling advantage. And with only five candidates on the stage for the first time — Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott — they all had far more time to speak. Yet they had precious little to say about Mr. Trump, even when given the chance just over two months before the Iowa caucuses. They sparred in a substantive debate that dissected disagreements over aid to Ukraine, Social Security, confronting China, banning TikTok and how to approach abortion less than 24 hours after Republicans suffered their latest electoral setbacks driven by the fall of Roe v. Wade.

REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMIAMI, Nov 8 (Reuters) - An intensifying rivalry between Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley could dominate Wednesday's Republican debate as the two 2024 U.S. presidential hopefuls seek to present themselves as their party's best alternative to former President Donald Trump. Haley, 51, in third place nationally, has grown stronger as she seeks to dislodge DeSantis, 45, from his distant second place in the Republican race after Trump. With the first Republican state nominating contest, in Iowa, little more than two months away, Haley, a former South Carolina governor who also served as Trump's U.N. ambassador, and Florida Governor DeSantis are running out of time. DESANTIS AT HOME IN FLORIDAThe Florida debate setting offers DeSantis a home advantage over others on stage. Haley will be coming off two strong debate performances and has been the only Republican besides Trump to show recent momentum in early nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire.

Republicans on Tuesday decisively lost key electoral matchups across the country that came down to one issue over and over again: abortion. Ron DeSantis has signed a ban on abortion beyond six weeks of a pregnancy in his state, while he also backs a nationwide ban beyond 15 weeks. Former Vice President Mike Pence had been the most staunch opponent to abortion, criticizing calls for consensus and arguing for a nationwide ban on abortion before 15 weeks. Still, he’s suggested openness to a ban beyond 15 weeks more recently. Youngkin, who wasn’t himself on the ballot, campaigned on a pledge to pass an abortion ban beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy if voters granted Republicans full legislative control.

Democrats in Albany are reminding businesses of this by passing legislation that would ban so-called non-compete agreements in employer contracts. Call it another gift to Florida. Opposition to non-compete agreements has become a new cause celebre on the left. Businesses use these contractual restrictions to prevent employees from going to work for competing employers for a specified period after leaving a company.

The third Republican presidential debate will take place Wednesday evening in Miami with the smallest field of contestants yet — just five candidates. That’s down from the clamorous field of eight who shouted and jostled their way through the first encounter in Milwaukee in August. (The former president, who has skipped the two previous debates, will be hosting a rally outside Miami while his rivals spar.) Here are some things to watch over the course of the two-hour debate. She has a chance to use her momentum to eclipse Mr. DeSantis, her most serious rival in the race, to be the top Trump alternative.

A brilliant blue painting by Pablo Picasso of his young mistress was crowned the prized lot of the November auction season so far after it sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $139.4 million, with buyer’s fees, on Wednesday. But it was an anonymous bidder who named the winning price over the telephone. (The work nonetheless fell short of the $179.4 million auction high for the artist, established at Christie’s in 2015.) “When it’s hard to compel someone to sell something, you need to put money on the table,” said Benjamin Godsill, an art adviser watching the sale. There is still a market, even if there weren’t fireworks.”

Review and Outlook: In the third Republican presidential debate on Nov. 8, 2023, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy revealed the emerging GOP fault line on foreign policy. Images: Getty Images/Reuters Composite: Mark KellyDonald Trump, Joe Biden and the Beltway press corps all agree on at least one thing: Mr. Trump has the 2024 Republican presidential nomination wrapped up. Yet no one has voted, the Iowa caucus is 47 days away, and now the contest to be the GOP’s non-Trump alternative is getting interesting. Nikki Haley on Tuesday won the support of Americans for Prosperity Action, which is part of the Koch network. In an endorsement memo, the group said Ms. Haley is ready to tackle inflation, simplify the tax code, and cut government spending, adding that she “has the courage to advocate for reforms to an entitlement system that makes promises it can’t keep.”

BEIRUT, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Christie's auction house has removed two paintings by Lebanese artist Ayman Baalbaki from its London sale this week following complaints, according to emails seen by Reuters, with the artist criticising the decision as a form of "discrimination". Both are no longer available on the website for Christie's auction on modern and contemporary Middle Eastern Art. A third piece by Baalbaki, depicting red flags seemingly on fire, remains on sale. A Christie's spokesperson said: "Decisions relating to sales remain confidential between Christie's and our consignors." The email said it was "normal policy" to remove pieces "if a work receives multiple complaints" in order to avoid "damaging press".

Here are six takeaways from the third GOP presidential primary debate:Foreign policy takes center stageOn Israel’s war with Hamas, there was little disagreement between the five candidates. “I am going to send troops to our southern border.”It was like Tuesday night never happenedJust like in the second debate, abortion concerns didn’t make it into the first more than 90 minutes of the program. The biotech entrepreneur came out swinging against the media, Haley, the debate moderators, the media, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, DeSantis and the Florida governor’s boots. Instead, the former South Carolina governor spent much of the debate sparring with Ramaswamy. During the Simi Valley debate, Haley said during a discussion about the app that she felt “dumber” every time she heard him speak.

He surveyed his 30 years as Journal editor and the progress that had been made. America had won the Cold War, vanquished the stagflation of the 1970s, and quieted the social convulsions of the 1960s and ’70s. “What I think I’ve learned over 30 years,” Bob wrote, “is that in this society, rationality wins out, progress happens, and problems have solutions. Instead, they addressed terrorism and the Middle East conflict as well as domestic issues such as Social Security and abortion. On foreign policy, Haley offered an unapologetic and determined vision, saying America needs to stand by its ally Israel and support Ukraine. On Social Security, both Haley and Christie said the retirement age needed to be raised for younger workers, though neither would state a specific age. Christie also called for means-testing, saying rich people did not need Social Security as a safety net. "As governor of Florida, I know a few people on Social Security," DeSantis quipped.

One of the Cézannes in particular, a still life titled “Fruits et pot de gingembre,” is a highlight of the Museum Langmatt in Baden, which houses a small collection of Impressionist works. The museum said it was financially necessary to sell the painting, and perhaps two others, to keep the foundation that owns it from insolvency. The still life is estimated to fetch $35 million to $55 million at an auction on Thursday at Christie’s in New York. “Bequests and donations come to museums because people think they will be safe,” said Bezzola, who argued the sale should be canceled. “All the important collections in Switzerland come from private donations and bequests, so this sends a terrible signal.”

At the first two debates, Mr. DeSantis played the front-runner, attacking his opponents only when he was hit first. This has not been an easy stretch for Mr. DeSantis, in no small part because of the attacks from Mr. Trump on everything from his foreign policy credentials to his height. Mr. DeSantis has staked his bid on his performance in the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses on Jan. 15. Mr. DeSantis offered a similar criticism of the president while campaigning in New Hampshire in October. Unless Mr. Trump makes a dramatic last-minute appearance on the stage, that seems unlikely to change.

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy speaks during the party's Florida Freedom Summit held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida, U.S., November 4, 2023. In an interview, Ramaswamy said he would formally introduce a pledge on Tuesday in Miami, on the eve of the third Republican primary date, laying out non-interventionist foreign policy principles. Ramaswamy's introduction of the pledge comes after weeks of sparring with fellow Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the UN, over foreign policy. Ramaswamy has said Haley, who ranks third in most Republican primary polls, risks dragging America into a bloody conflict thanks to her aggressive foreign policy stances. According to polling and analysis website FiveThirtyEight, Ramaswamy has the support of 5% of Republican primary voters, while Trump is the lead with roughly 58% support.

Takeaways from Election Day 2023 in America

Here are the key election night takeaways on a strong night for Democrats:As Ohio goes, so goes the nation? Tuesday night’s election results probably won’t change the equation for Biden in 2024, given Ohio’s recent presidential electoral history. Other state Republican parties might not be so lucky. Andy Beshear won a second term on Tuesday in a state that Trump carried by more than 25 points in 2020. Endorsed by Trump but often described as McConnell’s protégé, Daniel Cameron’s defeat will stir a lot of finger-pointing within the Republican Party.

Who Qualified for the Third GOP Debate?

Republican candidates are prepping for the third GOP presidential debate, as the field narrows with just two months to go before the first nominating contest. After raucous debates in Wisconsin and California, the candidates are set to return to the debate stage for a two-hour event at 8 p.m. The smaller field, paired with recent shakeup among the top challengers to Trump, is expected to produce new dynamics on stage. With that pledge, which has been somewhat controversial among the candidates, GOP presidential hopefuls must sign a statement that they will support the eventual Republican nominee. While the other candidates try to break ahead in the polls, former President Donald Trump – who opted not to participate in the first and second debate – is also expected to skip the upcoming confrontation.
