Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the third Republican presidential debate, held in Miami on Wednesday night. The debate didn’t answer the question of whether she can really cut into DeSantis’s more conservative bloc of support. He deserves praise for his substantive, competent answers, but there’s not much of a market for that in the Republican primaries. In a debate dominated by a neoconservative revival, Ramaswamy — in both style and substance — was the only Trumpist on the stage. primary voters relished his attacks on the Republican National Committee and the debate moderators.

It was the undercard that underwhelmed. The third straight Republican presidential debate that former President Donald J. Trump has skipped — choosing instead to rally with supporters a few miles away — represented a critical and shrinking chance for his rivals to close his chasm of a polling advantage. And with only five candidates on the stage for the first time — Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott — they all had far more time to speak. Yet they had precious little to say about Mr. Trump, even when given the chance just over two months before the Iowa caucuses. They sparred in a substantive debate that dissected disagreements over aid to Ukraine, Social Security, confronting China, banning TikTok and how to approach abortion less than 24 hours after Republicans suffered their latest electoral setbacks driven by the fall of Roe v. Wade.

Haley, 51, in third place nationally, has grown stronger as she seeks to dislodge DeSantis, 45, from his distant second place in the Republican race after Trump. With the first Republican state nominating contest, in Iowa, little more than two months away, Haley, a former South Carolina governor who also served as Trump's U.N. ambassador, and Florida Governor DeSantis are running out of time. Republicans on Tuesday decisively lost key electoral matchups across the country that came down to one issue over and over again: abortion. Ron DeSantis has signed a ban on abortion beyond six weeks of a pregnancy in his state, while he also backs a nationwide ban beyond 15 weeks. Former Vice President Mike Pence had been the most staunch opponent to abortion, criticizing calls for consensus and arguing for a nationwide ban on abortion before 15 weeks. Still, he’s suggested openness to a ban beyond 15 weeks more recently. A Christie's spokesperson said: "Decisions relating to sales remain confidential between Christie's and our consignors." Instead, they addressed terrorism and the Middle East conflict as well as domestic issues such as Social Security and abortion. On foreign policy, Haley offered an unapologetic and determined vision, saying America needs to stand by its ally Israel and support Ukraine. On Social Security, both Haley and Christie said the retirement age needed to be raised for younger workers, though neither would state a specific age. Christie also called for means-testing, saying rich people did not need Social Security as a safety net. "As governor of Florida, I know a few people on Social Security," DeSantis quipped.

One of the Cézannes in particular, a still life titled “Fruits et pot de gingembre,” is a highlight of the Museum Langmatt in Baden, which houses a small collection of Impressionist works. The museum said it was financially necessary to sell the painting, and perhaps two others, to keep the foundation that owns it from insolvency. The still life is estimated to fetch $35 million to $55 million at an auction on Thursday at Christie’s in New York. “Bequests and donations come to museums because people think they will be safe,” said Bezzola, who argued the sale should be canceled. “All the important collections in Switzerland come from private donations and bequests, so this sends a terrible signal.”

At the first two debates, Mr. DeSantis played the front-runner, attacking his opponents only when he was hit first. This has not been an easy stretch for Mr. DeSantis, in no small part because of the attacks from Mr. Trump on everything from his foreign policy credentials to his height. Mr. DeSantis has staked his bid on his performance in the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses on Jan. 15. Mr. DeSantis offered a similar criticism of the president while campaigning in New Hampshire in October. Unless Mr. Trump makes a dramatic last-minute appearance on the stage, that seems unlikely to change.
