One market breadth indicator suggests that we may still be in the early phases of a market decline. We had been focused on the 5050 level for the S & P 500 as a key "line in the sand" for equities. Looking back over the last two years, you'll notice the green-shaded areas in October 2022, March 2023, and October 2023 aligned well with major market bottoms. Earlier this month, the S & P 500 bullish percent index again broke below the 70% level, indicating a major market top had likely occurred. With the strength of the S & P 500 and Nasdaq 100 off the October 2023 market low, it can be tempting to treat all pullbacks as buying opportunities.

The highest-grossing film in recent memory is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” And the most-watched basketball star is Caitlin Clark. Beyoncé’s first country album, “Cowboy Carter,” topped Billboard’s charts with nearly half a million copies sold in its debut week. Meanwhile, Swift is set to release her highly anticipated album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on Friday. The impact of a once-in-a-generation star like Swift will surely inspire interest in other female-led performers, spawning even greater appetite and opportunities. Compare that to the NBA’s top pick Victor Wembanyama, who signed a $55 million contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

Her image shifted in 2008 after she launched her eponymous fashion brand, which has since shown regularly at London, New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. While her wardrobe today tends to skew more subtle, there’s still nothing Victoria can’t style out — including, most recently, a pair of crutches to support her broken ankle. LBDs and all-black looks were a mainstay of Victoria's wardrobe as Posh Spice, demonstrated here at Grosvenor House in London during the Ivor Novello Awards in 1997. Andreas Rentz/Getty ImagesHer penchant for color-blocking, particularly in bright reds and oranges, have become a signature feature of Victoria's look — shown here during a visit to New York in 2017. New Delhi/London CNN —In just a few days, India will commence the world’s largest democratic election. So, is the hype around Modi’s India, which remains a largely impoverished country, justified? The world’s largest biometric database has also helped the government save millions by reducing corruption in welfare initiatives. Domestic investors, both retail and institutional, have been driving India’s stock market to unprecedented peaks. Still, India’s economy, much like its democracy, is far from perfect.

The Popularity of Marathons
  + stars: | 2024-04-16 | by ( Ashley Wu | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Yesterday, a century later in that same town, about 30,000 runners crossed the starting line. Distance running, once a niche sport, has exploded in popularity over the past few decades. Many of those who run marathons today are middle-aged or older, and some are less fit and less experienced. As a result, the average finish time in American marathons has slowed considerably, even as the top runners keep getting faster. It’s a sign of how popular marathons have become.

In February, Taylor Swift took the stage at the Grammy Awards to accept the prize for best pop vocal album. 1, don’t release it on April 19. A week later, following a teaser during a Super Bowl commercial, Beyoncé also dropped news of a new album: “Cowboy Carter” would arrive earlier than “Poets,” with breathing room, on March 29. Another pop powerhouse in the Grammy audience made her own announcement in early April: Billie Eilish will unveil her forthcoming third album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” a month after Swift’s release, on May 17. Beyoncé and Swift, the 21st century’s pre-eminent pop stars, have often been cast as competitors if not rivals, a story line partly rooted in misogyny and amplified by dueling fan armies filled with stans, or superfans.

Somewhere between Clubhouse and X (formerly Twitter), Airchat's feed of audio snippets transcribed by the app has sparked conversation. Already, the invite-only app has a channel dedicated to the creator economy titled "Creators" — including industry figures like Eric Wei (CEO of Karat), Lia Haberman (influencer marketing expert), and Brett Dashevsky (host of Creator Economy NYC events). Dashevsky, a self-described "avid Twitter user," said that Airchat is already displacing his average Twitter screen time. It wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone in tech or social media to see Meta double down on Threads' audio tools. But she added that she could see Meta brainstorming ways to promote Threads' audio tools, which could become a concern for Airchat.

Taylor Swift's new album "The Tortured Poets Department" will arrive on Friday, April 19. The quiet rollout strategy says a lot about Swift's stature in the pop-music landscape. Die-hard fans say it's a masterpiece, destined to win Swift her fifth Grammy Award for album of the year. The aforementioned fans who insist "Poets" will dominate charts and break records have no idea what the album sounds like. The particulars of each rollout strategy are rendered irrelevant, dwarfed by the all-consuming enormity of her own personal news cycle.

Die-hard fans say it's a masterpiece, destined to win Swift her fifth Grammy Award for album of the year. But the fact that no fan has heard even one second of "Poets" — the album isn't out until Friday — seems to be a moot point. CNN —Coral reefs around the world are experiencing a mass bleaching event as the climate crisis drives record-breaking ocean heat, two scientific bodies announced Monday — with some experts warning this could become the worst bleaching period in recorded history. If ocean temperatures don’t return to normal, bleaching can lead to mass coral death, threatening the species and food chains that rely on them with collapse. Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, a climate scientist specializing in coral reefs based at the University of Queensland in Australia, predicted this mass bleaching event months ago. In February, scientists at the Coral Reef Watch program at NOAA added three new alert levels to the coral bleaching alert maps, to enable scientists to assess the new scale of underwater warming. Bex Wright/CNNIn mid-February, CNN witnessed extensive coral bleaching on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest coral reef system – on five different reefs spanning the northern and southern areas.

LONDON — The Bank of England on Friday announced a "once in a generation" overhaul of its inflation forecasting following a long-awaited review by former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke. The review — initiated following criticism of the central bank's recent policymaking — sets out 12 recommendations which BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said the bank was committed to implementing. They include the scrapping of the Bank's long-held "fan chart" forecasting system and the introduction of a revamped forecast framework. It added that the BoE currently relies more heavily than other central banks on a central forecast, which may not fully account for wider risks or how inflation expectations can become "de-anchored." Additionally, the review said the bank needed to improve its communication with the public, suggesting the it put less emphasis on the central forecast, simplify its policy statement, and reduce repetitiveness."

With this view in mind, I am looking for a bearish setup in the VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH) . This ETF seeks to track the largest, most liquid companies involved in oil drilling and selling oil equipment based on market capitalization. However, my trading platform indicates that this will tie up $5,500 of portfolio margin, a significant amount for a potential profit of just $430. Yet, since I'm paying a debit for the $365 call, it also decreases my profit potential from $430 to $133. I will need a good trade management plan with a stop loss in case the trade starts going against me.

The latest rumbling from the latter camp have pointed out that stocks look overvalued by the standards of none other than Warren Buffett. The so-called Buffett indicator compares the total market capitalization (share prices times outstanding shares) of all U.S. stocks with the quarterly output of the U.S. economy. Things are in normal territory if the total value of the Wilshire 5000 index (which measures the total market) is about on par with the latest quarterly GDP estimate. Stocks trading at about double the size of the economy is considered a major red flag. "If we're comparing a bubble to the late 90s and early 2000s, no this is not a bubble," she says.

Yet when Bragg walked quietly onto the stage, it took a second or two for the audience to realize he was there. In his dark blue suit and dark-rimmed glasses, he blended into the dark blue curtains behind the lectern. He was flanked by poster boards with flow charts, but that was as far as the showmanship went. But Bragg studiously avoided mentioning sex or hush money during the 13-minute event, focusing instead on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up the payment. Bragg looked frequently at his notes while he spoke, mostly in a monotone.
