When New York magazine’s finance advice columnist dropped an article that went viral on Thursday about falling victim to a $50,000 scam, my heart skipped a beat. My own financial planner had gone to jail years ago, which I’d chronicled in a few columns. What would I have done if someone called and insisted that my children, in particular, were in grave danger? But what would any of those entities do if they thought that any one of us was actually a victim of some kind of identity fraud? What would they say, request and tell us to do?

LONDON (AP) — Zendaya is on a fashion roll, in a cyborg “Dune: Part Two” kind of way. The co-star of the highly anticipated film sequel stunned Thursday at its world premiere when she hit the sand-strewn carpet in a silver robot suit straight from the archive of Mugler. Zendaya's body-hugging armor outfit with sheer plexiglass inserts has built-in gloves she paired with matching silver heels. While the runway version included a matching headpiece, Zendaya opted for a short sleek hairdo and a blue diamond necklace from Bulgari. Pugh, a newcomer to the world of “Dune” as the Emperor’s daughter, plays Princess Irulan with Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha.

Growing up in New York as the eighth of nine kids, my immigrant parents had big homeowner dreams for me. Over the course of a decade, we bought and sold three properties: our first home, a four-bedroom house, and a two-bedroom condo. Here's why I'm so much happier now and don't regret leaving homeownership behind. At my rental, I can easily stroll to restaurants and parks, and I'm a five-minute drive to theaters, museums and galleries. I'm glad we didn't settle for something we didn't like as much, just to say we're homeowners.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Nicaragua has filed an application with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa in its genocide case against Israel, the ICJ, also known as the World Court, said on Thursday. The court said in a statement that Nicaragua considers that the conduct of Israel is in "violation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention". South Africa and Israel have been invited to furnish written observations on Nicaragua's application for permission to intervene as a party. Several other states have signalled they might want to intervene in the Gaza genocide case but none have formally done so before Nicaragua. Last month the World Court ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians and do more to help civilians, although it stopped short of ordering a ceasefire as requested by South Africa.

Doug McDermott was once traded by Indiana to San Antonio, and now, the Spurs have traded him back to the Pacers. Trade deadline day in the NBA gave them and plenty of other players an entirely new outlook, plus may have even reshaped the start of the playoff push as well. He and Alec Burks are headed to the Knicks, a team that entered Thursday a game out of the No. Defending NBA champion Denver didn't make a move on deadline day, nor did reigning East champion Miami, though the Heat did their trade-season work a couple weeks ago by bringing in Terry Rozier from Charlotte for Kyle Lowry. Adding to the challenge of deadline day is this: Only five teams entered Thursday more than four games out of the final play-in tournament spots in the East and West.

A medical journal has retracted two studies claiming to show the harms of the abortion pill mifepristone, citing conflicts of interest by the authors and flaws in their research. Two of the three studies retracted by medical publisher Sage Perspectives were cited in a pivotal Texas court ruling that has threatened access to the pill. The U.S. Supreme Court will take up the case next month, with a decision expected later this year. Photos You Should See View All 15 ImagesBoth studies cited in the court ruling were published in the journal Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology. CNN —The academic publisher Sage Publications has retracted studies used by a Texas judge in a ruling that would suspend federal approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The 2021 study concluded that ER visits were more likely after a medication abortion rather than a surgical abortion. Kacsmaryk cited this study to suggest that the number of adverse events from medication abortion drugs is probably under-reported. The US Supreme Court will hear arguments in March about mifepristone, one of two drugs commonly used in the US for a medication abortion. Medication abortion is the most common form of abortion in the US, and multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that it is highly safe and effective.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Parliament on Tuesday afternoon stripped its former vice-president Eva Kaili of her immunity, clearing the way for an investigation of Kaili's alleged involvement in a 150,000 euro ($161,355) EU budget fraud case from 2015. The fraud case is unrelated to the corruption scandal dubbed Qatargate, in which the Greek politician is also involved. The report that was put to vote states that in the fraud case Kaili is accused of fraudulently spending between €120,000 and €150,000 of public money. The office of Kaili's lawyer, Spyros Pappas, did not immediately reply to a Reuters' request for comment but Pappas told news outlet Politico before the vote that he would take further legal action if Kaili's immunity were lifted. He told Politico that the notion that Kaili could serve prison time based on the outcome of the investigation is “at this stage rather premature and unsubstantiated”.

NEW YORK (AP) — First National Bank of Pennsylvania discriminated against Black and Latino homebuyers in North Carolina for a period of at least four years, the Justice Department said Monday, the latest in a long list of banks who have been caught redlining. In its complaint, the DOJ alleges that First National closed branches in majority-minority neighborhoods, failed to provide mortgage services to Black and Latino potential borrowers, and ignored entire neighborhoods for potential lending. The case comes from when FNB bought Yadkin Bank, a regional bank in the Carolinas, in 2017. “The playing field isn’t level, and that is not what we want for the people of North Carolina,” said Josh Stein, North Carolina's Attorney General. The DOJ brought the largest redlining lawsuit in history in 2023 against Los Angeles-based City National Bank, which was also found to have discriminated against Black and Latino communities over a similar time period, from 2017 to 2020.

(Reuters) - First National Bank of Pennsylvania was sued on Monday by the U.S. Department of Justice and the state of North Carolina, which accused it of lending discrimination known as redlining in the Charlotte and Winston-Salem, North Carolina markets. Redlining occurs when lenders deny or discourage mortgage applications and loans in neighborhoods based on the race, color, or national origin of people who live there. The Pittsburgh-based bank's redlining allegedly included locating and maintaining nearly all branch locations and mortgage loan officers outside these neighborhoods, and relying on majority-white areas for referrals and loan applications. The lawsuit seeks restitution to victims, a civil fine, an injunction against further redlining and other remedies. The lender ended 2023 with about $46.2 billion of assets and 350 branches in seven states plus Washington, D.C.(Reporting by Jonathan Stempel in New York, editing by David Ljunggren)
