CNN —Water levels at Lake Titicaca – the highest navigable lake in the world and South America’s largest – are dropping precipitously after an unprecedented winter heat wave. While water levels are known to fluctuate each year, these changes have become more extreme due to the climate crisis. Communities that rely on fishing are struggling as low water levels adds to mounting problems: declining fish stocks due to pollution and overfishing. “It’s going to keep affecting us, there won’t be any more totora, the islands are deteriorating, that’s what worries us,” Charca told CNN. Grinia Avalos, deputy director for climatology with Senamhi, told CNN that these warmer temperatures are expected to continue until at least February 2024.

CNN —If the idea of spending three years on a cruise ship made you claustrophobic, it’s time to look away now. There will now be seven potential start locations in the first year of the cruise, which departs Istanbul on November 1. While they aren’t the first to offer permanent (or semi-permanent) cruises, Life at Sea remains the only (relatively) affordable option for long-term cruising, says Holmes.

CNN —Labor Day weekend may mark the unofficial end to summer for many, but Mother Nature didn’t get the memo this year. July-like heat sends temperatures skyrocketingTemperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal levels for September could break or tie close dozens of records as heat builds over Labor Day weekend and into Tuesday. By Sunday, sweltering heat will expand across much of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and even portions of the mid-Atlantic. On Labor Day Monday, conditions will feel more like July across nearly two-thirds of the US. Places like Los Angeles and San Francisco may have the best weather in the country for Labor Day weekend.

"The war is coming home to Russia," Timothy Ash, emerging markets strategist at BlueBay Asset Management, said in emailed comments Wednesday. Alexander Nemenov | Afp | Getty ImagesAerial assaults have intensified in recent days with strikes occurring further into Russian territory. Drone warfareRussia blamed Ukraine for the latest drone attacks while Ukraine remained characteristically tight-lipped about these, and previous, assaults. Ukraine has been targeted with thousands of Russian drone attacks during the 19-month-long conflict, with its energy, defense and civilian infrastructure pummeled by swarms of Iranian-made UAVs. Experts agree that Ukrainian forces direct attempts to attack Russian territory and are likely to be assisted by disaffected anti-war Russians at times.

India’s economy grew at its quickest pace in a year in the April-June quarter, buoyed by strong services activity and robust demand, but a drier than normal monsoon season could restrain future growth. India’s Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran maintained his 6.5% growth forecast for the full year. Thamashi De Silva at Capital Economics said India’s GDP data was strong despite policy tightening by the Reserve Bank of India. Food prices climbIndia’s retail inflation in July rose to its highest in 15 months as vegetable and cereals prices skyrocketed. “High food inflation for a prolonged period could weigh on consumption growth,” said Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CareEdge Ratings.

That’s because workers at the site on the outskirts of town in December 2022 unearthed the ruins of an ancient Roman temple — or ‘capitolium’ — dating back to the first century BC. The excavation site in Sarsini has yielded ruins on top of ruins, literally. MiBac“We have unearthed three separate rooms, likely dedicated to the triad of gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva,” lead archaeologist at the excavation site Romina Pirraglia told CNN. The discovery of the temple has pushed local authorities to revise their building plans. “The temple is an incredible finding that sheds light on how ancient Roman towns rose and fell across time.”What makes the discovery exceptional is the temple’s unique state of preservation.

Residents stand outside their damaged buildings after a Russian missile attack in Kyiv, Ukraine overnight on August 30, 2023. Russia and Ukraine accused each other of launching multiple drone attacks against each other's territory overnight Wednesday. Russian officials accused Ukraine of launching several drone attacks against five regions in central and northwestern Russia, while Kyiv said it had repelled more than 20 drone and missile attacks on the capital. One alleged Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an airfield in Pskov in the northwest of the country, setting two Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft on fire and damaging several other aircraft, Russian news agency Tass reported. The governor of the Pskov region, Mikhail Vedernikov, said on his Telegram channel that the scale of the destruction is being assessed and flights from Pskov's airport were cancelled Wednesday.

But a strong El Niño tends to produce a significant and observable impact on weather patterns, lowering gas consumption and prices. On four of those six occasions, strong El Niño conditions prevailed the following winter (1957/58, 1987/88, 1997/98 and 2015/16). But a strong El Niño would make warmer-than-average temperatures more likely depressing energy consumption and prices. The rapid development of a strong El Niño helps explain why U.S. gas prices remain low in real terms despite the recent depletion of working gas inventories. Traders have started to anticipate a strong El Niño will reduce gas consumption for heating and power generation this winter.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTING HURRICANES? Yes, climate change is making hurricanes wetter, windier and altogether more intense. If it were not for the oceans, the planet would be much hotter due to climate change. Climate change can also boost the amount of rainfall delivered by a storm. It is unclear, however, if climate change is affecting the number of hurricanes that form each year.

REUTERS/Carlos Garcia Rawlins/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSINGAPORE, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Despite improvements in China, air pollution across the globe continues to pose the greatest external risk to human health, with countries in Asia and Africa suffering most of the impact, new research showed on Tuesday. PM2.5 in South Asia has risen by nearly 10% since 2013, she said, cutting average life expectancy in the region by around five years. Virtually all of Southeast Asia is also now considered to have "unsafe levels of pollution", with average life expectancy cut by 2-3 years. China's average PM2.5 concentrations stood at 29 micrograms per cubic metre in 2022, but it still remains significantly higher than the WHO recommendation of 5 micrograms. "We haven't turned the corner on air pollution yet, though China's example shows us that the issue is a tractable one," Hasenkopf said.

China generated 121 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) from hydro in July 2023, down from 146 billion kWh in the same month a year earlier, and the lowest since 2015. China also boosted generation from wind farms (+16 billion kWh) and solar farms (+5 billion kWh) compared with July 2022. But without the extra generation from thermal (+44 billion kWh) it could not have offset the drop in hydro (-25 billion kWh) while meeting growth in load (+40 billion kWh). SOUTH CHINA DROUGHTFour-fifths of China’s total hydro generation comes from provinces along the Yangtze River system and further south. Facing continued restrictions on hydro generation, coal-fired generation, coal production and coal imports will have to rise even further.
