East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has the longest average commute time at 36.2 minutes one way. The New York City metro area ranked second, while four California cities were in the top eight. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that residents of East Stroudsburg, a city about 40 miles north of Allentown in Pennsylvania, have the longest commute times of any metro area. The average commute time in East Stroudsburg — sometimes considered the gateway to the Poconos — may be the longest since residents often work in larger metropolitan cities like New York City, Allentown, or Philadelphia. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area similarly has commute times of nearly 33 minutes as it's near the Los Angeles area.

In France, it was named the “Neapolitan disease” after the French army got infected during its invasion of Naples, Italy, in the first documented syphilis epidemic. A complex disease caused by a complex bacteriumWithout treatment, syphilis can cause physical disfigurement, blindness and mental impairment. Others believe T. pallidum bacteria always had a global distribution but perhaps grew in virulence after initially manifesting as a mild disease. Some bones had marks characteristic of infection with T. pallidum — the bacteria effectively eat away at bones, leaving concave lesions. “The modern tools available for extracting DNA from ancient samples, for enriching the treponemal DNA, and obtaining deep sequencing from samples has rapidly increased our understanding of the Treponema.”

New York CNN —Israeli hostage posters that were hung up at Harvard University had been vandalized with antisemitic messages just as students returned from winter break. Footage shared with CNN by Harvard student Alexander Kestenbaum shows a handful of hostage posters defaced with messages such as “Israel did 9/11.” A poster of a four-year-old Israeli hostage was defaced, while “LIES FAKE” was scrawled over another hostage poster. Photos and videos geolocated by CNN indicate the vandalized posters were hung just outside Holworthy Hall, a first-year student dorm located on the northern edge of Harvard Yard. The Harvard spokesperson said the vandalized posters near the Thayer Gate have been removed and the Harvard University Police Department is investigating the incident. “Instead, they were confronted with vandalism, the defacement of hostage posters, and vile antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Inflation measures how fast prices are rising for goods and services — anything from concert tickets and haircuts to groceries and furniture. That means further broad disinflation likely won't come from consumer goods, economists said. In fact, attacks by Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea threaten to disrupt a key transit corridor and may trigger higher goods inflation if it persists, El-Erian explained. While down from more than 7% last year, services inflation still sits at 5.3%. Why this may all be 'nonsense'Not all economists think the last mile of disinflation will be harder than what came before, however.

Opinion: Our possibly short national nightmare
  + stars: | 2024-01-21 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +19 min
“My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. Yet, John Avlon wrote, Trump and some members of the House GOP, want to tank an emerging compromise in the Senate that would couple border security measures with aid to Ukraine.

Despite being separated by oceans and years, my great-uncle became a dear friendMy great-uncle was born in 1921, meaning we had an age gap of over 70 years. As someone who also loves languages, writing, and talking to many different people, his undimmed intellectual curiosity proved inspiring to me. An additional ongoing gift from my friendship with my great-uncle is that of writing letters. Since writing to him and realizing how differently — and beautifully — people sometimes express themselves in long-form handwriting, I began writing letters to friends and receiving letters in turn. Some of my friendships now have a precious quality they potentially wouldn't otherwise have were it not for letters.

Our genetics play a big role in how easy we find it to gain and lose weight. But it's possible to be a healthy weight despite your genes, an expert in the genetics of obesity said. Don't focus on calories aloneTo lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit , meaning you're burning more calories than you consume. Focus on your health over your appearancePeople want to lose weight for lots of reasons but a common motivation is to fit into societal beauty ideals. This can prove to be a weak motivator in the long run though, and doesn't necessarily benefit your health, Yeo said.

Similar to prenuptial agreements, a postnup outlines which partner maintains ownership over which assets in the event of a divorce. The main difference is that with a postnup, you're already married when you get it, which has a couple of important implications. Any assets acquired since the wedding, and even some acquired as an individual, such as retirement accounts, become "marital property" once you're married. The couple had a "misconception" that prenup and postnup agreements are for couples with vastly different net worths, Bhaloo says. Opinion: For the Houthis, war is a way of life

I think they’re probably ill-advised because I don’t think they’re going to do what they are intended to do. I don’t think they’ll deter the Houthis. This is such an unequal war because the whole character of war has changed. I don’t think it would make the slightest bit of difference whether the US designated them or not. I think they’re on the way to becoming Hezbollah.

These genetic variants may have subsequently proved beneficial to European populations in making the shift from hunting and gathering to farming. “DNA from hunter-gatherers is present at higher levels in Northeastern Europe, which means the region has an elevated genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease,” Barrie said. Similarly, the ancient genetic information shed light on the evolutionary history of traits such as height and lactose tolerance. And for most traits, MS included, the genetic effects are the result of multiple genetic variants,” he said. “Ultimately, we can’t say that MS came from Bronze Age populations, but these populations’ movements and environments contribute to differences in MS risk today.”

HR and recruitment teams are beginning to use AI tools in multiple stages of the hiring process. But beware: AI recruitment can still be riskyWhile AI technology is helping recruiters in many ways, there are some risks to consider and mitigate. In 2022, researchers at Cambridge University found that AI recruitment tools weren't capable of eradicating bias or boosting diversity during the hiring process. These problems often arise because of biased historical data used for training AI recruitment technologies, Maynard said. Jackson recommended that companies develop strict policies governing the use of AI hiring tools and provide their recruitment teams with bias training.

Because of the encryption technology "nobody, including Meta, can see what's sent or said, unless you choose to report a message to us," Loredana Crisan, the head of Messenger, wrote in an accompanying blog post . Since 2016, Messenger users could choose, or opt-in, to safeguarding their chats via a process referred to as end-to-end encryption, which scrambles peoples' communications so that third-parties can't eavesdrop and access the data. Although Meta's other messaging app, WhatsApp, also utilizes end-to-end encryption, privacy advocates have generally considered Signal to be a more secure communication service because it collects less user data. "After years of work rebuilding Messenger, we've updated the app with default end-to-end encryption for all personal calls and messages," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday. In 2022, Meta conducted a test on Messenger that let users back up their end-to-end encrypted conversations in case they needed to access them on another device.

But industry experts say governments need to offer incentives for companies to bring sustainable AC technologies to market and scale up. Removing humidity requires cooling air to the point at which water vapour becomes a liquid to be drained. This inability to get rid of humidity without first cooling the air makes conventional ACs less efficient. The company's AC prototype uses these materials to dry out air, aiming to produce fewer emissions than traditional ACs. More than 1 billion people living in warm climates still lack access to cooling, according to nonprofit Sustainable Energy for All.
