In a move that may soon be replicated elsewhere, the Gila River Indian Community recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to put solar panels over a stretch of irrigation canal on its land south of Phoenix. “This was a historic moment here for the community but also for the region and across Indian Country,” said Gila River Indian Community Gov. The idea is simple: install solar panels over canals in sunny, water-scarce regions where they reduce evaporation and make renewable electricity. (AP) — An eight-foot-tall bronze statue of a late Native American leader known for preserving cultural dances now stands surrounded by trees in a historic park outside of California's state Capitol building, replacing a statue of a Spanish missionary that protesters toppled it in 2020. “Finally, the California Indian people will have a monument here on the Capitol grounds for all those visiting to know that we are still here,” said Assemblymember James C. Ramos, the first Native American in the state Legislature. Newsom has also signed laws to promote the teaching of more Native American history in schools and to remove a derogatory slur from sites across the state. Upon creating their Coinbase accounts, users agreed to resolve any disputes with Coinbase in arbitration. But a subsequent agreement that related specifically to the sweepstakes said disputes over the contest should be heard in court in California. A federal judge in California refused Coinbase's request to force the dispute into arbitration, as the company argued the user agreements required.

Staff for the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) said the plan will boost returns for the $444 billion system, the largest in the U.S., plus cut in half its portfolio's "emissions intensity," a measure of emissions relative to output. Cashion said the new investments will be spread among companies that do things like mitigate emissions or make infrastructure more resilient to climate change, selected across different asset classes. Additional proposed legislation would require state funds to sell fossil fuel stocks, following systems in other states such as Maine. CalPERS has opposed the idea, saying it would do little to limit emissions and could compromise returns. But he said CalPERS will develop a process to evaluate whether a company is prepared for stronger climate regulations or shifts in consumer demand.

Rep. John Duarte, a vulnerable House Republican, owns a family tree farm in California. His farm is facing a new lawsuit alleging that they deceptively sold the wrong kind of lemon tree. That's on top of an existing 2015 lawsuit alleging that his farm sold defective pistachio trees. Specifically, Turner says that Duarte Trees and Vines — a tree nursery located in California's Central Valley — agreed to sell him 1,860 "8A Lisbon lemon trees," but sold him seedless lemon trees instead. ☆ SolarEdge shares sink after company offers weak Q4 guidance

Shares of SolarEdge tumbled over 20% in extending trading Wednesday after the solar product manufacturer reported soft guidance for its fourth quarter amid demand struggles in the renewable energy sector. For the overall solar sector, SolarEdge said it expects revenue in the $275 million to $320 million range. At the time, Lando said installation rates for solar panels had declined though those rates typically increase during the third quarter. SolarEdge is based in Israel, but Lando said in October the Israel-Hamas war has not had an impact on manufacturing. The solar sector has faced headwinds over the past year as rising interest rates weigh on the demand for solar energy.
