WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Eight top Republican presidential contenders will take part on Wednesday in the first debate of the 2024 primary election cycle. All major Republican candidates will be present with one major exception: former President Donald Trump. They are also required to sign a pledge certifying that they will support the eventual Republican nominee. In some cases, during previous primary campaigns, poor performances have sunk candidacies, while strong performances have launched minor candidates into the top tier. Several more are likely, with an October debate likely to occur in Alabama, according to a person familiar with the operations of the Republican National Committee.

Charlie Neibergall, Meg Kinnard | APFormer President Donald Trump holds a double-digit lead over his closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a major new poll of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa released Monday. Trump garnered the support of 42% of respondents, while DeSantis came in second with 19%. In an overture to Iowa voters, Trump also asserted without evidence that he "saved" ethanol and popular entitlement programs. While Trump and DeSantis share a similar overall approval in the state — 63% for Trump and 61% for DeSantis — the Florida governor's support appears to be much shakier than the former president's.

If Mr. DeSantis ends up doing so, Mr. Christie said he had one piece of advice: “Get the hell out of the race.”In an interview this month during his surprise visit to Ukraine, Mr. Christie said he was not particularly bothered by the prospect of a debate without Mr. Trump. One, he’s afraid to be on the same debate stage and defend his record. And two, you know, this is a guy who, by not showing up, just gives me more time. Either way, I win.”Mr. Christie and his advisers see the debate as a forum built to the former governor’s strengths. He has been heavily focused on the debate, bringing it up in casual conversations with both advisers and political acquaintances as he takes the temperature of the race.

To win, they must break free of Mr. Trump’s drama, step out of his shadow, go on offense, attack, and present their case. While the other Republican candidates are running to save America, Mr. Trump is running to save himself. Chris Christie, who has done great work exposing Mr. Trump’s weaknesses, must broaden his message and show voters that he is more than the anti-Trump candidate. If Mr. Trump is the Republican nominee for president in 2024, Republicans will lose up and down the ballot. And Mr. Trump, ever the narcissist, will spend the entire campaign whining about his legal troubles and bilking his supporters of their retirement savings to pay for his lawyers.

Former President Donald J. Trump won’t be there. But eight other Republicans hoping to catch him are now set for the first debate of the 2024 presidential primary on Wednesday in Milwaukee, the Republican National Committee announced on Monday night. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has been Mr. Trump’s leading rival in most polling, and Mr. Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence. Chris Christie of New Jersey, a Trump ally turned antagonist, has secured a spot, as has another vocal Trump opponent, former Gov. Two prominent South Carolina Republicans have also earned places onstage, Senator Tim Scott and Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador.

The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Without Trump at the debate, seven other candidates are set to make their cases for the White House. Here's a look at how the debate is coming together, as the GOP candidates had to meet a set of criteria to even appear onstage. Christie, once a close ally of Trump, has consistently been the fiercest critic of the former president in the GOP race. Suarez, should he make it onstage, will likely just focus on boosting his profile to GOP voters beyond South Florida.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday he will not participate in the first Republican primary debate this week. A Trump adviser told CNN that the former president could still decide to participate in a later primary debate, despite his post. Wednesday’s primary debate is the first of the 2024 cycle. “I’m still holding out hope that President Trump will come. Fox News president Jay Wallace and the network’s chief executive, Suzanne Scott, had also encouraged Trump to participate in the debate.

Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas said on Sunday that he had met the qualification criteria for the first Republican presidential debate this week, which would make him the eighth candidate to qualify. They must also sign a pledge to support the Republican nominee, whoever it is. Nikki Haley of South Carolina, former Vice President Mike Pence, the entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Mr. Hutchinson can probably be safely added to the qualified category soon. The Republican National Committee will need to verify his donor numbers, but he has some wiggle room there — he told CNN on Sunday that he had submitted proof of 42,000 contributors.

Ron DeSantis is prepared to be “the center of attacks” next week at the GOP’s first debate in the 2024 presidential race, according to a campaign memo obtained by CNN that lays out how DeSantis is preparing for the debate stage. The memo, sent by new campaign manager James Uthmeier to donors and supporters, argues the Republican primary is a “two-man race” between DeSantis and former President Donald Trump, who is not expected to participate in the debate. The campaign is “fully prepared” to be “on the receiving end of false, desperate charges from other candidates and the legacy media,” the memo states. On Sunday, Ken Cuccinelli, the founder of the Never Back Down super PAC, said it was a mistake to post the memo. DeSantis told CNN Saturday that “you got to be ready for everything” on the debate stage.

The source said Carlson is "always in discussions" with all the candidates, and nothing is firmly set with Trump and Carlson. The New York Times first reported on Trump's plans to skip the debate for an interview with Carlson. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Thursday that she believed Trump will sign the pledge if he decides to debate. In a post to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Thursday Trump touted his poll numbers as a reason not to participate in the GOP debate. Chris Christie, a GOP presidential candidate who has qualified for the debate, said, "not going?

Mr. Trump may well be correct to assume he has more to lose than gain from these matchups. They are meant to provide voters with a meaty opportunity to judge their options side-by-side, to listen to them field tough questions, to compare their policies and priorities and visions of leadership. It is all the truer for Mr. Trump, who is dominating the Republican herd. Even with Mr. Trump missing, there will be much awkward talk of him. I’m sorry, but we already watched Mr. Carlson give Mr. Trump a thorough bootlicking back in April, not long before Fox News gave Mr. Carlson the boot, in fact, and it was sad.

Former President Donald Trump won't be attending the first presidential debate on August 23. Instead, according to the New York Times, he'll be interviewed online by Tucker Carlson. In March, filings in a defamation lawsuit revealed that Carlson privately trashed Trump: "I hate him personally." The Times reports that Trump will be interviewed by Carlson in "an online interview" at a time to be determined. A defamation suit between Dominion Voting Systems and Fox News revealed that Carlson privately trashed Trump in text messages.

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis speaks next to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds during a "Fair-Side Chat" hosted by the governor at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S., August 12, 2023. The DeSantis campaign, Never Back Down and Axiom did not immediately respond to requests for comment. DeSantis' campaign, which is in charge of the Florida governor's debate preparations, is under no obligation to accept Never Back Down's advice, and it is unclear if they will. Trump, who is by far the frontrunner, has said he is unlikely to take part in the debate, which will take place in Milwaukee. That leaves DeSantis as the top target on the stage, even as his hold on second place is shrinking.

A memo from a consulting firm unofficially tied to Ron DeSantis' campaign leaked on Thursday. The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. The suggestion that DeSantis show "emotion" comes after months of scrutiny on DeSantis' relatively awkward manner on the campaign trail. The memo was originally drafted by the political consulting firm Axiom Strategies, which works for the Never Back Down super PAC associated with DeSantis' campaign. Since the Times reported on the memo, it's been removed from Axiom's site, but is still available via the Times' website.

The first GOP presidential debate is scheduled for August 23. A strategy memo suggests DeSantis should defend Trump following any attacks from Gov. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign urges him to defend former President Donald Trump from any personal attacks by fellow candidate Chris Christie. Among the documents included on the site was a debate memo giving DeSantis and his campaign general advice about how to approach the first Republican presidential debate. "Trump isn't here so let's just leave him alone," the memo suggests DeSantis could say in response.

Ron DeSantis refused to say how he would respond if one of his children is gay. DeSantis has fought to pass restrictions in Florida on how gender identity and other topics can be taught. But when asked by Time Magazine how he would respond if one of his three kids turned out to be gay or trans, he didn't have much to say. DeSantis' presidential campaign has been struggling, to put it mildly. As of today, according to FiveThirtyEight, DeSantis trails Trump by nearly 40 percentage points in major national polls.

Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign sat in second in GOP primary polls behind former President Donald Trump. A new Emerson College poll shows Christie in second place, ahead of DeSantis. Former President Donald Trump was far and away the most desired GOP candidate to the polled likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters, as 49% of them said they plan to support him. In March, the Emerson College survey found that 17% of likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters said they would support DeSantis for the GOP nomination. Trump has repeatedly hinted that he may skip out on the event, leaving ample opportunity for DeSantis to sway any unsure voters.

And even if Trump is not the GOP nominee in 2024, ebbing public support for the war could hurt Biden. Therefore, for political, as well as strategic reasons, there is huge pressure on Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive this summer to produce significant battlefield breakthroughs. Any suggestion that Ukraine’s offensive has been bogged down will deepen that skepticism over a prolonged US commitment. Soon after the Russian invasion in February 2022, 62% said the US should do more to support Ukraine. The political dynamics in the House represent a rather precarious foundation for Ukraine’s vital US support, underscoring why a stalled offensive could represent a political disaster for Zelensky in the United States as well as a strategic loss for Ukraine at home.

Trump then told the audience not to call Christie a "fat pig." "Christie, he's eating right now, he can't be bothered," Trump remarked during a lengthy commentary about the state of polling in the 2024 presidential campaign so far. Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. "Hopefully, former President Trump has the courage to show up," O'Malley said. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. Asa Hutchinson said last week that his campaign is "close to halfway" toward the donor threshold.

Chris Christie said Trump "certainly committed crimes" related to his classified documents indictment. Christie has already qualified for the first GOP presidential debate later in August. In June, a federal grand jury indicted Trump, accusing him of mishandling classified documents after he left the White House. The superseding indictment alleged that De Oliveira, Nauta, and Trump conspired to delete surveillance footage at the resort and obstruct the federal investigation. Republican presidential hopefuls have just two weeks left to qualify for the first presidential primary debate, which is set for Aug. 23. Candidates must hit the minimum threshold of 40,000 unique donors and the polling thresholds 48 hours prior to that debate, and also commit to supporting the eventual GOP nominee.
