A federal appeals court on Thursday ruled that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., must testify before a Georgia grand jury examining possible election interference in the state two years ago. It also sided with the lower court's finding that "there is significant dispute about whether his phone calls with Georgia election officials were legislative investigations at all." Willis has said publicly she’s investigating a pair of post-election phone calls Graham made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, and his staff. Graham has been fighting the subpoena since it was issued in July, turning to federal court after an unsuccessful bid to challenge it in state court. The Fulton County grand jury is currently in a “quiet period” through Election Day, Nov. 8.
After James announced the lawsuit, Trump in a social media post called the action "Another Witch Hunt." NEW YORK CRIMINAL PROBEThe Trump Organization is set to go on trial on Oct. 24 on New York state criminal tax fraud charges. Legal experts said Trump may have violated at least three Georgia criminal election laws: conspiracy to commit election fraud, criminal solicitation to commit election fraud and intentional interference with performance of election duties. A California federal judge said on Wednesday in a separate lawsuit that Trump had knowingly made false voter fraud claims in a Georgia election lawsuit, according to emails the judge reviewed. read moreIt is not immediately clear what ramifications Trump could face from the ruling.
Tricia Raffensperger chastised Kelly Loeffler for endangering her life in 2020 for political gain. The wife of Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger slammed Loeffler in heated text messages. Loeffler called for Brad Raffensperger’s ouster to further Trump’s 2020 election denial scheme. "I hold you personally responsible for anything that happens to any of my family," Tricia Raffensperger wrote, adding, "You do not deserve to be in elected office." And that's all we did," Brad Raffensperger said.
A line of early voters file down the hall as early voting begins for the midterm elections at the Citizens Service Center in Columbus, Georgia, October 17, 2022. Turnout from Georgia's first day of early voting set a new state record for a midterm election, nearly doubling the figure from the same time period in the previous midterms, state election officials said Tuesday. More than 131,000 Georgia voters cast ballots since early voting began Monday, according to the office of Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. The figure represents an 85% boost over the 2018 midterms, when nearly 71,000 early votes were cast on Day One, the office said. Georgia's latest tally is also nearly as large as the state's first day of early voting in the 2020 presidential election — 136,739 in that contest versus 131,318 in the current cycle, Raffensperger's office said.
When thousands of Georgia poll workers open their voting locations on Election Day, they will be equipped with a new tool designed to help protect them — a text alert system to report any threats at their polling places. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office created the incident reporting tool in response to threats made against state poll workers during and after the 2020 election. The new system comes after Georgia saw unprecedented threats to elections workers following the 2020 presidential election. Richard Barron, who ran Fulton County elections in 2020, told NBC News in April the threats his office received led to record turnover. Sterling said they have to strike a delicate balance between vigilance and not giving the possibility of threats too much attention.
When Mr. Barr resigned in December 2020, Mr. Trump attempted to replace him with Jeffrey Clark, an environmental lawyer in the Justice Department who had expressed a willingness to help Mr. Trump subvert the election. Mr. Trump was informed of the threats, too, before he whipped the mob into a frenzy and urged them to march on the Capitol. Before that happens, Mr. Trump must be “required to answer for his actions,” as Mr. Thompson rightly said. It sounds so basic and yet, with Mr. Trump, it has remained so elusive. Led by Mr. Trump, the party has morphed into the greatest threat to the Republic since the Confederacy: a revanchist cult that refuses to accept electoral defeat.
Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who is retiring this cycle after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, is endorsing a slate of high-profile Democrats (and a few Republicans) in key midterm races. Kinzinger is also backing Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski and independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin in Utah, House Republican hopeful Larry Lazor in Connecticut and a state House candidate in Minnesota. Shapiro, Hobbs, Fontes, Benson and Murkowski are all running against Republican nominees backed by the former president and who have all at least questioned the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election. While not backed by Trump, Nevada Republican secretary of state nominee Jim Marchant and Minnesota Republican secretary of state nominee Kim Crockett have also cast doubt on the 2020 election. While Lee subsequently voted to certify the 2020 election, opponents have used those texts to argue he lent a hand to those who sought to discredit the election.

NEW YORK ATTORNEY GENERAL CIVIL SUITNew York Attorney General Letitia James said her office uncovered more than 200 examples of misleading asset valuations by Trump and the Trump Organization between 2011 and 2021. James accused Trump of inflating his net worth by billions of dollars to satisfy loan terms and get better insurance coverage. Researchers focused on 10 categories related to voting, including registration, inconvenience, early voting, polling hours and absentee voting. The state also stopped using special voting deputies, officials whose tasks had sometimes included conducting voter registration drives, according to the study. To assess the voting laws passed after the 2020 election, this year’s Cost of Voting Index study added new categories and scoring. While the political debate surrounding new election laws has centered on ballots and the voting process, the Cost of Voting Index also gives heavy weight to the ease of voter registration. States rank higher in the index if they allow voter registration drives, provide automatic voter registration, offer same-day registration and maintain longer periods in which to register.
The Georgia DA investigating Trump called for testimony from Mark Meadows. Fani Willis ordered Trump's former Chief of Staff to testify next month. Willis is looking into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. It comes amid the Jan. 6 committee hearings, where House members are investigating the Capitol riot at the US Capitol as Congress was certifying the election. In June, Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Meadows, gave bombshell testimony about Trump's behavior related to the attack during a House hearing.
A federal appeals court temporarily blocked Graham from appearing before a Georgia grand jury. Fulton County prosecutors want Graham to offer testimony in their probe into the 2020 election. Graham has argued that his status as a sitting federal lawmaker should exempt him from testifying. But on Sunday, the appeals court listed what actions must be performed before Graham would have to testify before a grand jury. The appeals court said they would then hear the issue "for further consideration."

Trump went after his critic, Rep. Liz Cheney, at a rally in Wyoming on Saturday. Trump has endorsed Harriet Hageman, an attorney running to unseat Cheney. "The people of Wyoming are going to vote to dump your RINO congresswoman Liz Cheney," Trump told the audience, erupting into cheers, "And you're going to send the incredible Harriet Hageman to Congress." The rally is being held to support Harriet Hageman, Rep. Liz Cheney’s primary challenger in Wyoming. "All of America is counting on you, Wyoming," Trump said.
