Proposed government regulations for airlines could lead to higher ticket prices, Delta's CEO said. The regulations would require airlines to compensate passengers for controllable delays or cancellations. If the Biden administration introduces new regulations requiring airlines to compensate passengers for controllable cancellations and delays, ticket prices will go up, according to Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian. Earlier this month, the US Department of Transportation announced plans to come up with new rules that would hold airlines more accountable for potential cancellations and delays. It does not provide compensation in the form of cash — no major US airline does that — travel vouchers, or frequent flyer miles.

At first glance, Kristofer Baxter doesn't seem like an ideal candidate for offering tips about succeeding on Wall Street. His outside perspective offers a unique look at what it takes to find success on the Street. Too often, people explaining how they found success on Wall Street, or anywhere, amounts to them bragging about how hard they worked. Man Group's <develop> program is growing in popularity among non-tech workers. That's the thinking behind Man Group's technology upskilling program, <develop>, which has served as the $144 billion investment firm's answer to a tight tech-labor market. "The level of demand for software engineers outstripped the number of qualified engineers entering the workforce each year," Lara Carty, Man Group's chief people officer, told Insider. It's also spanned a variety of backgrounds, from workers on the trading desk to communications and public-relations employees, Carty said. There's classroom-based learning led by about a dozen of Man Group's top engineers with a mentorship aspect.
Kristofer Baxter leads a team of about 20 UI engineers at Citadel, a $57 billion hedge fund. I started my career at a golf tee-time reservation company, then worked in roles at Netlflix, LinkedIn, and Google. But it's really important to be quick. We work really closely with front-office partners and investment professionals so we know what to build. The really important thing there is that you can't be afraid of scale, or even failure.
Barring any cancellations, there will be 3% more seats on flights from US to Europe this summer than in 2019. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have the most scheduled seats, with over 9 million each. Barring any cancellations, that would constitute a 3% increase in capacity compared to the summer of 2019, and a 15% increase compared to last year. With over 2.5 million seats, Turkish Airlines has increased its scheduled capacity by 78% compared to pre-pandemic times. See the top 10 airlines connecting Europe and the US by scheduled seat capacity for summer 2023:

There's high demand for international summer travel and likely not enough seats to satisfy it. Americans have their eyes set on international travel — and Europe especially. If you want to fly to Europe this summer, you're likely going to spend $300 more than you would have before the pandemic. Last year, it was flights within the US that had their most expensive summer in years, averaging $376 round trip. "Next summer for international will be less expensive than this summer and probably start returning to some level of normalcy similar to what happened with domestic," Berg said.
Booking a domestic flight 3 to 4 months in advance helps travelers find the best price. Prices for US domestic flights have finally cooled off after a very expensive 2022. Other than domestic flights, only flights to South America and the Antilles are cheaper than they were last year. Finding the best deal for summer travel is all about timing. Domestic mid-week flights — Wednesday especially — are on average $56 cheaper year-round, $60 cheaper over the summer, and up to $100 cheaper during holidays.

A story about training non-tech workers that has nothing to do with ChatGPT? Man Group, a $144 billion investment firm, has a popular training program to get non-tech workers up to speed on coding and data-science. Programs like <develop>, along with the rise of ChatGPT, speak to a wider trend across Wall Street of enabling employees to build their own tools despite not having a background in tech. Empowering people to build their own tools and apps to streamline their work seems great on paper. Read more about how Man Group teaches non-tech workers programming skills that help them save time.

I recently tried to eat at McDonald's as a person with celiac disease. McDonald's doesn't claim any of its food as gluten-free so I was very limited in what I could order. McDonald's is one of the largest chain restaurants in the US, with over 13,000 locations across the country. Eating out with celiac is not easy, but restaurant chains often provide a safe haven, given their strict food preparation protocols and allergen lists stamped everywhere. In Italy, for example, McDonald's sells an uninspiring but safe gluten-free burger that is cooked wrapped in plastic to avoid cross-contamination.
Emirates' new check-in store is 30 minutes from the airport by public transport, and 15 by car. The location should allow passengers to avoid long lines and crowds at the airport. Much like an airline desk at any airport, it will also give passengers the option to book travel, according to Emirates. Emirates' robot check-in assistant is called Sara and is equipped to match faces with scanned passports and give passengers instructions.
