This July 1938 shows workers in the orange grove of the Na'an kibbutz. Deganya, which is still inhabited today, is considered Israel’s first kibbutz. But the kibbutzniks, as kibbutz residents are known, are still largely viewed as left-leaning. Israeli forces extract dead bodies of Israeli residents from a destroyed house in Kfar Aza on Tuesday. Neta is missing from Be’eri kibbutz, a community of about 1,000 near Gaza known for its successful printing press and art galleries, where more than 100 bodies have been found.

New York CNN —Starbucks violated federal labor law when it increased wages and offered new perks and benefits only to non-union employees, a National Labor Relations Board judge found Thursday. The decision is the latest in a series of NLRB rulings finding that Starbucks has violated labor law in its efforts to stop unions from forming in its coffee shops. Last year, Starbucks announced that it would raise wages for non-union employees, and offer them other new benefits. Starbucks should also post a notice in its cafes telling workers that the NLRB found Starbucks had violated federal labor law, and detailing employee rights, she said. Thursday’s decision was “a massive victory for Starbucks workers,” Starbucks Workers United, which has been leading the union charge, said in a statement to CNN.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and four other U.S. senators are pressuring the U.S. Treasury Department to step up oversight and offer more guidance to financial institutions on addressing climate change risks threatening the U.S. financial system. The senators called on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and newly appointed climate counselor Ethan Zindler, a climate and clean energy research executive, to do more to protect the U.S. economy from what Yellen has described as the "existential threat" posed by climate change. The senators said they were particularly concerned about nonbank financial institutions, which also played a critical role in the 2008 global financial crisis, and said the FSOC should finalize and immediately implement a new analytic risk framework for climate-related financial risks. They also repeated earlier calls for stronger Internal Revenue Service enforcement of rules on political activity by nonprofit organizations, citing efforts by special interests to fuel climate change denial, and investigations into how such funding could be obstructing more action on the climate crisis.

Cazoo’s debt fix points to bumpy ride

That’s not the fate of shareholders in UK-based and U.S.-listed Cazoo (CZOO.N), which has just announced a brutal debt restructuring. Under the deal announced on Wednesday, bondholders will swap $630 million of convertible notes for $200 million of fresh debt and a large slug of the equity. The debt cut will do little to fix Cazoo’s rickety engine. Although the company had 195 million pounds of cash at the end of June, it burnt through over 50 million pounds in the previous six months. And revenue this year is expected to fall nearly 40%, as customers racked by high interest rates tighten their belts.

The 57-year-old will receive 13 million pounds’ worth of cash and restricted shares on top of his normal pay as compensation for leaving Microsoft. Such generosity is questionable considering that in April nearly half of the London-listed company’s shareholders voted against a pay package of more than 8 million pounds for Bird. Despite its greater digital focus, Pearson’s revenue is expected to flatline over the next three years, LSEG forecasts show. The United Auto Workers on Friday began strikes at Detroit carmakers Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Sanders voiced enthusiasm for their biggest demand: moving to a four-day workweek while maintaining five-day pay. UAW members pushed for this policy in the middle of the last century during a prior wave of automation. With artificial intelligence poised to reshape white-collar jobs, more workers might come to see things Sanders’s way.

In addition to calling for a 36% pay raise and increased job security, union members want a 32-hour, four-day workweek with no pay cuts. Proposals to shorten the workweek have gained traction in recent years, with the flexibility of pandemic-era remote work fueling many of these calls. The accelerating use of artificial intelligence in the workplace has also pushed some workers to question the necessity of a 40-hour week. Sen.
