It may be the shortest hole on the course, but Royal Liverpool’s par-three 17th hole is already proving a tall order for some players at the 151st edition of the tournament. When Rory McIlroy lifted the Claret Jug in 2014, the 17th hole was a 458-yard par four. General view across the 17th tee as crowds look on during a practice round prior to The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Though an opening one-over 72 marked a disappointing start to his latest pursuit of a second major, he did birdie the 17th hole. Herbert’s strong start crumbled after his 17th tee drive skewed left to settle at the bottom of the green’s slope.

A growing middle class and demand for high-end tech offers opportunities for Apple to grow revenue. And so I'm very, very bullish and very, very optimistic about India," Apple CEO Tim Cook told investors in 2017. Only 5% of smartphones sold in India are iPhonesAccording to CNBC, iPhones accounted for 5.1% of all smartphone sales this year in India. India also now accounts for 4% of all iPhone sales, making it the fifth-largest consumer of Apple phones. Apple already dominates the US and much of the rest of the world, but it is still a minor player in India.

Meta's VP of Metaverse said the hype cycle for the metaverse is dead, but that's okay. The metaverse team can "put their heads down and build" the experiences, Vishal Shah told Fortune. "I think the metaverse hype is dead. People access Meta's metaverse apps through the company's Quest lineup of headsets, but Apple recently announced the $3,499 Vision Pro headset. Interestingly enough, Apple is avoiding the term metaverse in favor of "spatial computing."

“Milan Kundera, a Czech-French author who is among the world’s most translated authors, died on July 11, 2023 in his Paris apartment,” the library, a state-funded research organization, said in a statement. The author of “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” Kundera was known for his witty, tragicomic tales, which were often intertwined with deep philosophical debates and satirical portrayals of life under communist oppression. Exile in ParisHe spent the rest of his life in exile in Paris, becoming a French citizen in 1981. US philantropist Bill Gates speaks during the Global Fund Seventh Replenishment Conference in New York on September 21, 2022. For example, on Tuesday, senators received a classified briefing about AI and the military. In the blog post, Gates cites how society reacted to previous advancements to make the case that humans have adapted to major changes in the past, and they will do so for AI as well. Gates suggests that the kind of regulation the technology needs is "speed limits and seat belts." He proposes regulation that would clearly outline what kind of deepfakes are legal to make.

Stephen Prothero wrote the book “Religious Literacy,” about the absence of religious literacy in American civic life. I wonder how many people who are reading that have alarm bells going off about the state of American civil society. American religion has long been entrepreneurial, and American religion will likely adapt in ways that increase religious participation in the medium to long run. But I fear that American society and social services will suffer in the short run. This is my understanding of religion, of pluralism, of social change: If you tell an inspiring story, people will want to move in that direction.

CNN —If TikTok and Reddit influencers are to be believed, the plant-based compound called berberine can be a replacement for such popular diabetes and weight loss drugs as Ozempic and Wegovy. Is berberine’s weight loss effect meaningful? Berberine may enhance the body’s natural production of GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide 1, a gastrointestinal hormone that’s used in Ozempic and other new weight loss drugs. However, in terms of its weight loss benefits, they are modest at best,” he said. “Metformin lowers blood sugar, and berberine lowers blood sugar,” Levitt said.

Multiple presidents, from George Washington to Donald Trump, have endorsed conspiracy theories. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln both openly espoused conspiracy theories of various kinds. It was important for me early on to make a distinction between actual conspiracies and conspiracy theories. And those tend to be a specific cover-up around specific things, there's an identifiable group of actors and once you start doing basic journalism, these things tend to unravel pretty quickly. So I think that's, unfortunately, where we're heading.

New York (CNN) Some investors are turning bullish on energy stocks, despite their disappointing performance this year and some major challenges facing Big Oil. But energy stocks have fallen 7.8% this year, compared to a gain of 14.5% for the S&P 500. Why are energy stocks down? The energy sector rose about 59% last year after Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent commodity prices skyrocketing. There are two main reasons why investors are keen on energy stocks: They're priced attractively, and the companies are making money.

The bubble in China's property market finally popped. In April, China's economic data came in weak largely across the board. The problem is that while consumers may be picking up, the biggest drivers of the Chinese economy — property and exports — are going to stay dormant. Consumer consumption makes up about 37% of the Chinese economy (in the US that figure is about 70%). Beijing has tried to shift the country toward a consumption model, like the US, but exports still make up 20% of China's economy.

New York CNN —The US economy has been surprisingly resilient this year, but painful bumps are likely coming, said Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon in an interview with CNBC on Monday morning. In this good-is-bad economy, strong employment and higher wages mean higher inflation as companies pass on increased labor costs by raising the price of goods. Like its Wall Street rivals, Goldman Sachs has been hit by a slump in dealmaking and activity. In January, Goldman Sachs launched much deeper layoffs that were expected to result in the loss of as many as 3,200 employees. Last September, Goldman also let go of underperformers as part of a normal process at the bank.
