Is Måneskin the Last Rock Band?
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( Dan Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
The other way Måneskin is isolated from the PNRC is geographic. Over the course of lunch, it became clear that they had encyclopedic knowledge of certain eras in American rock history but were only dimly aware of others. But none of them had ever heard of Fugazi, the post-hardcore band whose hatred of major labels, refusal to sell merchandise and commitment to keeping ticket prices as low as possible set the standard for a generation of American rock snobs. It picks up again with Franz Ferdinand and the “emo” era of mainstream pop rock. While snobs like Larson and me are overrepresented in journalism, we never constituted a majority of rock fans.

Ongoing weakness in the office sector will cost US banks as much as $250 billion. AdvertisementAdvertisementAlso weighing on the commercial real estate market is higher interest rates, which should put pressure on landlords that have to refinance their loans in the near term. Most owners of commercial real estate have been able to take advantage of the near-zero rates over the past decade. But other areas of the commercial market should remain solid, like industrial real estate, multifamily housing, and data center spaces, according to Bass. When you look at multifamily, multifamily is doing really well," he said.

While the Jets concluded their night with coach Robert Saleh joining a celebratory mob in the end zone, the injury to Rodgers cast a pall over their season. Saleh said after the game that the injury was to Rodgers' Achilles tendon and that the 39-year-old quarterback would have an MRI on Tuesday. A night that began with optimism for the Jets turned disappointing before the game was even four minutes old. Rodgers injured his left ankle when he was sacked by Buffalo’s Leonard Floyd and fell awkwardly on the leg. NFL Network reported Rodgers’ left foot was in a black walking boot as he was carted to the X-ray room.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) — As the U.S. races to build offshore wind power projects, transforming coastlines from Maine to South Carolina, much remains unknown about how the facilities could affect the environment. So far, four offshore wind projects have been approved by the federal government for the U.S. East Coast, according to the American Clean Power Association. The company is a Danish wind power business that will build two of the three offshore projects approved for New Jersey. Numerous others have been proposed, and the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plans to review at least 16 offshore wind projects by 2025. The federal government has endorsed — but not required — compensation to the fishing industry for negative effects from offshore wind.

Mr. Davis credited Mr. Dyett with pushing him to play across styles, and during high school he also studied with Rudolf Fahsbender of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He would go on to receive a bachelor’s degree in music education from the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago in 1952. As a young player in Chicago, he was mentored by local bassists like Wilbur Ware and Eddie Calhoun. While still in college, he performed with the pianist and bandleader Sun Ra, who at the time was still billed as Sonny Blount. His first major gig was with the pianist Ahmad Jamal in 1952.

Buffett cut the record, titled "Equal Strain On All Parts," earlier this year before he died from skin cancer on Sept. 1 at age 76. "Gummie," a celebration of marijuana-laced candy, was inspired by a dinner party attended by Buffett, former Beatle McCartney and their wives, Mailboat Records said in a press release. McCartney wound up playing bass on the track, which Buffett wrote. Buffett went from Key West beach bum to billionaire behind the always-on-vacation "Margaritaville" commercial empire with legions of fans known as Parrotheads.

Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the rock band Smash Mouth, which was best known for its ubiquitous 1999 hit “All Star,” died on Monday. His death, at his home in Boise, Idaho, was confirmed by the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, who said the cause was liver failure. Smash Mouth was founded in 1994 in San Jose, Calif., and was made up of Harwell, the lead singer, Kevin Coleman on the drums, Greg Camp on the guitar, and Paul De Lisle on the bass. The band first broke out with their 1997 song “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which appeared on their debut album, “Fush Yu Mang.”“‘Walkin’ on the Sun’ changed music. It changed the way people listen to music,” Harwell told Rolling Stone in 2019.

But now, the Folk Implosion’s contributions to that soundtrack will be reissued on Sept. 8 via Domino Records as “Music for Kids.” It contains all the original compositions the band made for the movie, many of which have never been available on streaming, as well as a grab bag of sonically similar Folk Implosion recordings from subsequent albums. “Music for Kids” also doubles as a flagship release for the duo’s reunion. Davis left the band in 1999 on unfavorable terms; today, they’re working on new Folk Implosion recordings, and making plans to perform together. “Him being a fan of my work really made me feel safe — that I could just start talking.”Their mutual openness led the Folk Implosion in a very different direction. Contrary to Dinosaur Jr.’s grungy guitar heroics, or Sebadoh’s homespun singer-songwriter recordings, Davis was more comfortable pushing Barlow to experiment with rap and R&B production methods.

Before Beatlemania, there was the distinctive Höfner violin bass — the first guitar that Paul McCartney bought after becoming the bassist for the Beatles. That bass can be heard on some of the band’s most famous hits, including “Love Me Do,” “She Loves You,” and “Twist and Shout.”Mr. McCartney picked up the instrument in a Hamburg music store in 1961, and it accompanied the Fab Four as they rocketed to stunning success, becoming the most famous band in the world. But the guitar vanished eight years later. A new campaign is seeking to find the missing instrument, and hundreds of people have responded, hoping to help solve the decades-old mystery: Where is Paul McCartney’s missing bass guitar?

“This is the bass McCartney played … in Hamburg in 1961, at the Cavern in Liverpool and on those first Abbey Road recordings – it powered Beatlemania and shaped the sound of the modern world,” The Lost Bass Project said. All sorts of rumors have emerged about where the bass went and where it could be,” the group said. If you have credible information about the bass, this is your chance to share it and be part of music history,” it added. Heading the Höfner search project is Nick Wass, who worked closely with McCartney’s team and even wrote a book about the missing instrument. “The bass was in need of repairs and so it was sent to a firm in London, early in 1964, who carried these out.

Being an executive at one of Wall Street's most powerful firms — and a mother of five — requires patience, grit and impeccable time management. Shekhinah Bass started working at Goldman Sachs when she was just 22 years old, and says sharpening her time management skills has helped her be more productive and avoid burnout as she rose in the ranks at the firm. The 39-year-old is now Goldman Sachs' head of talent strategy within the firm's human capital management division. The longer Bass has worked at Goldman Sachs, the more she's realized that you can only achieve work-life balance "if you're deliberate and proactive about how you set boundaries," she says. There's one time management hack, in particular, that Bass swears by to maintain a strong work-life balance: timeboxing.

It helped — a lot — that by then she had met Soloman Howard. In 2016, Pérez starred as Juliette in “Roméo,” and her colleagues included Howard, a bass-baritone, as the duke. At one point, Santa Fe Opera asked Pérez to tape herself singing “Song to the Moon” from “Rusalka,” and Howard said, “‘We are going to make a video,’” she recalled. She doesn’t really remember that night — “I was out of my body” — but others do. I’m always trying to eat more fish, but fish doesn’t always make it easy. Or the fish I wanted has sold out, and now I have to figure out if my salmon recipe will work with tilapia. Or — the most likely scenario — I just didn’t make it to the fish counter and now need a way to make frozen fillets sing. So I understand why Yewande Komolafe’s coconut fish and tomato bake has over 4,000 reviews and a five-star rating: It’s flexible, forgiving and incredibly flavorful. With that sweet-spicy coconut sauce and plenty of lime to punch everything up, this recipe makes even those frozen fillets taste fantastic.

The appearance by the conductor John Eliot Gardiner leading the Monteverdi Choir and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique in southeastern France this week was supposed to be a celebration: the start of a tour across Europe by one of classical music’s most revered maestros and his esteemed ensembles. Instead, Gardiner, 80, provoked an outcry when, on Tuesday evening, he was accused of hitting a singer in the face backstage after a concert performance of the first two acts of Berlioz’s opera “Les Troyens” at the Festival Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André. Gardiner struck the singer, William Thomas, a bass, because he had headed the wrong way off the podium at the concert, according to a person who was granted anonymity to describe the incident because the person was not authorized to discuss it publicly. Thomas, a rising bass from England who was performing the role of Priam, did not appear to be seriously injured and was set to perform again on Wednesday evening. His representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

For the first time since 2011, a new champion in women’s soccer has been crowned. Amy Bass Rodney BedsoleSpain came out swinging with vigor and poise in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney’s Stadium Australia, spreading the field, finding gaps in England’s backline and posting early dominant possession percentages. Jamaica made history at this World Cup because of the Reggae Girlz’ prowess, supported by a viral fundraising effort, not by its own federation. Indeed, it is his job to further the game, including and perhaps especially the women’s game, and not sit and wait to be convinced by women or anyone else.
