The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that convicted felons who served their sentences are allowed to vote, after the state's top election official sought to keep them from casting ballots ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Nebraska has historically restored the voting rights of former felons two years after they completed the terms of their sentences. While Nebraska is solidly Republican state, it awards an electoral vote to the winner of each of its congressional districts. The Sentencing Project, criminal justice reform advocacy group, estimated that eliminating the waiting period for convicted felons in Nebraska would restore voting rights for 7,000 people. Far more completed their felony sentences more than two years ago, too, and were affected by the state officials prohibition on their voter registration.

A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. He has repeatedly praised the three board members who passed the measure, saying they’re “pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.”The three members are Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares and Janelle King. Three GOP members of the Georgia State Election Board were thrust into the spotlight after Trump mentioned them by name at a rally in Atlanta this summer. Among the other rules Cox invalidated is one that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, saying Georgia law didn’t support the requirement. Americans are more eager to vote early than they were before the pandemic, but a deep partisan divide on early voting remains, the latest national NBC News poll shows. Another 47% said they plan to vote early (20% by mail and 27% in person). Overall, 52% of voters said they're planning to cast their ballots early this year, with 44% planning to vote in person on Election Day. (By late October, the share of people saying they'd vote early had risen to 68%.) The partisan divide between those voting early and on Election Day remains stark, after years of former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies attacking the legitimacy of early voting.

CNN —A judge in Georgia has paused a new rule from the Georgia State Election Board that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, criticizing state election officials for approving it so close to Election Day. The hand-count rule is the subject of litigation on multiple fronts and a separate hearing on the matter is set for Wednesday. Passed by the Donald Trump-backed Republican majority on the state election board, the rule would require officials at a polling place to match the number of ballots tallied by voting machines with a hand-count of the number of ballots cast. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has noted the state took several steps to speed up the reporting of results in Georgia this year.
