Nio reported a widening net loss in its latest earnings, as the CEO of Xpeng warns many EV firms face a fight to survive. Xpeng delivered 24,000 vehicles last month, and Xiaomi sold over 100,000 of its SU7 EV this year alone. AdvertisementHowever, the booming sales come as many Chinese EV makers continue to report heavy losses, as they grapple with a brutal price war and intense pressure to quickly launch new affordable models amid a crowded field of battery-electric vehicles. The company reported a net loss of 5.06 billion yuan ($700 million), up 11% from the third quarter of 2023. Both companies narrowed their net losses year-over-year, but they remained sizable at 1.81 billion yuan ($250 million) for Xpeng and 1.14 billion yuan ($157 million) for Zeekr, respectively.

New York (AP) — Chuck Woolery, the affable, smooth-talking game show host of “Wheel of Fortune,” “Love Connection” and “Scrabble” who later became a right-wing podcaster, skewering liberals and accusing the government of lying about COVID-19, has died. Mark Young, Woolery’s podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. Woolery told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2003 that his favorite set of lovebirds was a man aged 91 and a woman aged 87.

Hollywood was back this weekend to where it desperately hungers to be — at the center of global culture. Women flocked to the PG-rated “Wicked,” a lavish adaptation of Act One of the popular Broadway musical, while men supported “Gladiator II,” an R-rated sequel 24 years in the making. Together, the two big-budget movies were on pace to sell roughly $380 million in tickets worldwide, bringing the box office back to life after months of audience indifference. That sum would make “Wicked” the third-highest opener for the year, behind $211 million for “Deadpool & Wolverine” and $154 million for “Inside Out 2.” (Overseas, “Wicked” was expected to collect an additional $48 million.) Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” was on pace to collect about $60 million in North America, including previews, for a worldwide total since arriving in overseas release earlier this month of about $225 million.

To the Editor:Re “Why We Got It So Wrong,” by David Brooks (column, Nov. 15):Mr. Brooks helps us understand why Kamala Harris lost by showing that voters did not vote their personal identities. So why did so many decent, caring people vote for a man riddled with so many personal flaws? Why were they inspired by his “fight, fight, fight” war cry? Disadvantaged because their material situation has lost ground compared with those they believe claim to be their betters. Insider Today: White-collar recession

AdvertisementThis post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. TikTok videos espoused the benefits of #publicsector jobs, and Google searches for "how to get a government job" hit a five-year high. Several careers consultants told Business Insider they were already experiencing a rush of demand from workers ready to shift to the private sector. But ask any white-collar professional, and they'll tell you a horror story that would prove otherwise. Hiring has held up well for low-earning workers, but those making six figures or more are in the midst of a white-collar recession.

All across France, there's a glut of châteaus for sale. Plans require approval by the French minister of culture, and work must be done by designated specialists. A handful of Democrats are sounding their approval of Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State but others continue to doubt some cabinet picks made by President-elect Donald Trump. Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she has "a friendship" with Rubio and said she's looking forward to talking to him about his policies. Another name that has drawn substantial criticism from the Senate is former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's candidate for Director of National Intelligence. Sen. Duckworth alleged that Gabbard is "compromised," and she worries that the former congresswoman couldn't pass a background check. It's a slur, quite frankly," Republican Sen. Only a small share of employees work fully remotely. During the pandemic, many departments allowed more staffers to telecommute — though about half of federal employees continued to work fully in person. Looking at all federal employees, nearly 80% of the hours they work are in person, the OMB report found. “I don’t think you can just eliminate a quarter or half of federal employees on an ad hoc basis without paralyzing the government,” he said. President-elect Donald J. Trump’s final flurry of cabinet picks and other appointments rounded out what his aides described as a unified, loyal, MAGA-driven administration. There is a revenge team, led by prospective nominees with instructions to rip apart the Justice Department, the intelligence agencies and the Defense Department, hunting down the so-called deep state and anyone who participated in the prosecutions of Mr. Trump. There is a calm-the-markets team, which Mr. Trump hopes will be led by Scott Bessent, the Wall Street billionaire who Mr. Trump chose for Treasury secretary.
