SEATTLE (AP) — Denis Bouanga scored his fourth goal of the MLS Cup playoffs in the 30th minute, goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau made seven saves, and defending champion Los Angeles FC advanced to the Western Conference final with a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night. Bouanga got one chance at goal and didn’t miss, scoring in his sixth straight game and sending LAFC home for the conference championship game against the Houston Dynamo next Saturday. Bouanga was the Golden Boot winner during the regular season with 20 goals and he added three more in LAFC’s opening round victory over Vancouver. His goal came despite Seattle controlling play for most of the first half and having two great chances in the opening five minutes that were denied by Crepeau. Bouanga’s shot was the only attempt LAFC put on goal in the first half and it finished with only two shots on target in the match.

NOVEMBER 1942: An Intimate History of the Turning Point of World War II, by Peter Englund. Translated by Peter Graves. “This is a book about November 1942,” the Swedish economist and historian Peter Englund explains in his introductory note to the reader, “the month that marked the turning point of the Second World War.” November 1942 was the month that brought the Allies hard-fought victories in North Africa and inspired Churchill to say that the war had reached “the end of the beginning.”Englund’s approach to the subject is more or less the same as it was when, more than a decade ago, he used the diaries and memoirs of people who lived and survived during an earlier conflict to compose his acclaimed account, “The Beauty and the Sorrow: An Intimate History of the First World War.”“If you are wondering what I’ve added,” Englund writes, somewhat sternly, of his new book, “the answer is: nothing.” Apart from footnotes, then, all information — every detail of every day — is drawn from these records of personal experience. An “intimate history” does “not attempt to describe what the war was during these four critical weeks,” he explains, “but will try to say something about how it was.”Some of the 39 writers he has selected are well-known figures — Albert Camus; the Soviet journalist Vasily Grossman; the Australian surgeon captured by Japanese forces, Edward “Weary” Dunlop; the English pacifist and nurse Vera Brittain; the British war poet and tank driver Keith Douglas — but most are relatively obscure.

Scientists have obtained the first ever proof that black holes can lose energy. They've long believed that magnetic fields could suck energy out of black holes but didn't have proof — until now. The M87 supermassive black hole is emitting energy like "million-light-year-long Jedi lightsabers," the co-author of a new study said. AdvertisementScientists have long believed that black holes, which generally swallow up everything around them, can also lose energy. Space.com noted that Albert Einstein's theory of relativity predicted that black holes can lose energy and scientists have believed since the 1970s that magnetic fields can extract energy from black holes.

Event organizers said Musk attended the VIP reception, but did not stay for the dinner.

Xi received a standing ovation as he entered the room, and two more before and after he took the stage to speak. "Whatever stage of development it may reach, China will never pursue hegemony or expansion, and will never impose its will on others. China does not seek spheres of influence, and will not fight a cold war or a hot war with anyone," Xi said. China and the U.S. reached an agreement to curb fentanyl production in earlier talks between Xi and Biden. Analysts have said Xi's speech alone is unlikely to dramatically alter U.S. business sentiment about China.

Biden and Xi try direct diplomacyThe mood music was upbeat but pragmatic after the first face-to-face meeting in a year between President Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. There was no joint communiqué after Wednesday’s talks, but both sides issued positive statements trumpeting where they found common ground, including on tackling climate change and improving communications. The leaders agreed to restart military communications that were suspended last year after Nancy Pelosi, then speaker of the House, visited Taiwan. Larry Fink of BlackRock and Steve Schwarzman of Blackstone reportedly sat at the Chinese leader’s table. The measure would keep the federal government funded through early next year, clearing the way for President Biden to sign the legislation.

Microplastics may affect the weather, new study finds
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( Mary Gilbert | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Now, scientists have found that these tiny particles might even be able to influence the weather. Microplastics form when larger plastics break down, either by chemically degrading or physically wearing down into smaller pieces. The authors of Wednesday’s study found microplastics affect cloud formation, and clouds are of huge importance to the weather we experience. According to the study, microplastics can now be added to that list. Once the first water droplets cling to microplastics and other tiny particles, more water droplets are pulled together and clouds form.

Airbnb has made its first acquisition as a public company, in a deal valued at just under $200 million, sources familiar with the deal told CNBC. The startup is called Gameplanner.AI, which has been in "stealth mode" since its founding in 2020. Startups in stealth mode operate out of the public eye for various reasons, such as to protect intellectual property or avoid distractions. Airbnb's news follows reports that Google is in talks to invest hundreds of millions into another AI startup, Character.AI, which in March raised a $150 million at a $1 billion valuation in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The startup lets people create virtual characters or chat with AI versions of celebrities like Elon Musk or Albert Einstein.

As its Covid gains evaporate, Pfizer wants a chunk of the budding weight loss drug market. Those companies helped spark the weight loss drug industry gold rush over the last year with their weekly obesity and diabetes injections, such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro. They want to see the drug cause a similar level of weight loss as a once-daily pill from Eli Lilly. "If Pfizer's data is positive, then I think people might be able to look beyond all this Covid overhang," Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Louise Chen told CNBC. A weight loss pill could be a boon for all three companies.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood’s actors union reached a tentative deal with studios Wednesday to end its strike and months of labor strife that ground the film and television industries to a historic halt. “We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers,” the union said in a statement. “Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work.”At nearly four months, it was by far the longest strike ever for film and television actors. More than 60,000 SAG-AFTRA members went on strike July 14, joining screenwriters who had walked off the job more than two months earlier. ___For more coverage of the actors and writers strike, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/hollywood-strikes/
