Abd El-Fattah was found guilty of spreading false information for sharing a Facebook post, a charge frequently used against activists and those of suspected of dissent. Abd El-Fattah has been on a hunger strike for more than 200 days and on Sunday stopped drinking water. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday said that he had raised the case of Abd El-Fattah while attending COP27. In January, Egyptian-Palestinian activist Ramy Shaath was freed following more than 900 days in detention after he renounced his Egyptian nationality. The only explanation his supporters have, Bahgat said, is that Abd El-Fattah was “one of the most prominent and influential voices” of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.
Egyptian-British activist Sanaa Seif is calling for her brother's release from an Egyptian jail. The Egyptian government has denied mistreatment, and this summer a member of the presidential-pardon committee said Abd el-Fattah was among those being considered for possible release, reported Al-Ahram, an Egyptian state-owned newspaper. He added that foreign intervention in human-rights reform in Egypt "is fated to fail" and would harm the country's people. Seif said her family has exhausted every legal route in Egypt to secure her brother's release, to no avail. "After COP, I don't know if I'll be alive or not," she said.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that more than 1,000 heating points will be set up in the city. The stations have generators and water supplies, he said. "This is the most severe security situation in several decades," Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told a news conference. Putin and top Russian officials have repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons to protect Russia. "Second, there is no reason for him to use any nuclear weapons ... For Putin, the threat of using nuclear weapons "is more valuable than if he actually uses them", said Kristoffersen. Asked whether he thought Russia was more willing to use nuclear weapons than before, Kristoffersen said Putin was following the Russian doctrine of using nuclear weapons when the country's "very existence" was at risk. Yet, Kristoffersen stressed Russia could rebuild its land forces in a hurry given it trains about 250,000 conscripts every year.
Sergei Surovikin is the new top Russian commander and has been nicknamed "General Armageddon" by colleagues. He is said to be behind Monday's deadly attacks across Ukraine. Human Rights Watch reported the attacks killed at least 1,600 civilians and displaced an estimated 1.4 million people. On Tuesday, a local Russian politician said on Telegram that an enlistment office will be set up in the North Ossetia Alania region, which lies on the border between Russia and Georgia. "In addition, a mobilization point of the military registration and enlistment office will be deployed at the checkpoint in the near future," Sergeev said. Putin decreed that soldiers who surrender, desert, or refuse to fight can face up to 10 years in prison. At least 820 protesters have been detained in connection to Saturday's protests, a rights group said. The stiffened penalties come as protests continue across Russia against Putin's partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine. Footage from Saturday's protests in Moscow showed police pinning protesters to the ground, carrying men, and escorting women into police vans. The ongoing protests come as droves of draft-age Russians have tried to flee the country, leading to plane ticket prices soaring and border crossings being overwhelmed.

Several world leaders with strong Russian ties have recently rebuked Putin over his war. It declined to sanction Russia, and gave Russia's sanctioned oligarchs safe harbor, even as it condemned the war. ChinaOn September 15, Putin acknowledged at a summit with Xi Jinping that China has "concerns" about Russia's invasion. Public scoldingThe public nature of Putin's conversations with Xi and Modi make them sting more, said former US ambassador to Ukraine Michael McFaul. "Xi and Modi clearly wanted to signal to the world that they don't support Putin's barbaric, reckless, and losing war in Ukraine," he tweeted.
Their soldiers are using working T-72 tanks that were abandoned by Russian forces, it said. The equipment is higher quality than the broken weaponry Russian troops left earlier in the war, it said. The move prompted Russian troops to flee as fast as they could, leaving behind so much weaponry and ammunition that Ukraine has struggled to handle it all. The Institute for the Study of War said that Russian forces are "attempting to mobilize additional forces" but have "proven unable to generate significant combat power." Earlier this year, when Russian forces failed from taking over the capital Kyiv, Ukrainian mechanics were repairing destroyed Russian tanks and using them in battle.
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine shared audio it said was intercepted from Russian soldiers. The shot came about 15 meters away from us or so," the man said in the audio. At one point in the audio, the woman said: "I just don't get this at all."
Modi explicitly criticized Russia's war in Ukraine while meeting with Putin on Friday. "Today's era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this," Modi said. We want all of this to end as soon as possible," Putin told Modi. Putin told the Indian leader, "I know about your position on the conflict in Ukraine, and I know about your concerns. Doesn't take much clairvoyance to see that Xi, Modi, and others are deeply annoyed by fallout from Russia's war in Ukraine.
