WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday rejected independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s attempt to appear on New York’s general election ballot. Kennedy, who has dropped his own presidential campaign and endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump, is fighting to appear on ballots in certain states over Democratic opposition. Kennedy’s lawyers said a state court was wrong in concluding that he could not appear on the ballot because of a dispute over his place of residence. Kennedy lives in California but had included a New York address as his residence when circulating a petition to appear on the ballot. After losing in state court, Kennedy filed an emergency application in federal court, but lost at both the district court and appeals court levels before turning to the Supreme Court.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges – including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national – according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. And so, the building opened as requested by a Turkish official who had plied Adams with travel benefits and other gifts, the indictment says. In addition to the free travel and hotel rooms, Adams received illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors, including the Turkish government official, the indictment says. Adams has repeatedly said that his administration is cooperating in the investigations and he's focused on his work as mayor.

New York Mayor Eric Adams is expected to face federal charges by prosecutors out of the Southern District of New York as soon as Thursday, two sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday night. Before news of federal charges broke Wednesday, Adams was at a reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which President Joe Biden also attended. “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez said on X. "However, it is clear that defending himself against serious federal charges will require a significant amount of the time and attention needed to govern this great city. CNN —A New York appeals court is set to hear arguments Thursday in former President Donald Trump’s bid to have the $454 million civil fraud judgment against him dismissed. The appellate hearing is yet another legal development for Trump playing out the same time as his presidential campaign hits the homestretch. In addition to the civil fraud appeal, Trump’s lawyers have argued to dismiss the guilty verdict in the New York criminal case, the federal election interference case in Washington, DC, and the E. Jean Carroll defamation verdict – all in the past month. The judgment against Trump was for $354 million, with an additional $100 million in interest that had accrued when the judge’s ruling was issued in February. “The award of $464 million in a case with no victims, no proven injuries, and no losses is not remotely defensible,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

The son of the man accused of plotting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his golf course has been arrested in connection with a child sex abuse images case. Oran Alexander Routh was charged in federal court Monday with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The criminal complaint filed against Oran Routh states that his North Carolina home was searched in connection to an unrelated case. The complaint also said investigators found a messaging app on the phone that is "commonly used by individuals who distribute and receive child pornography."
