This week, while completing a press tour around New York for the FX series, “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” Demi Moore was hardly seen without her 1.5 pound dog, Pilaf, nestled in her elbow. “She is a treasure, she’s like my little extra heart.”On Monday, Moore was spotted again with her dog, Pilaf, this time in Tribeca. During the height of her influence, Paris Hilton was regularly seen with a fleet of chihuahuas in tow. Wearing a Versace lace tailored blazer dress, Moore held Pilaf like a tiny fluffy clutch bag. Moore is known to adopt and foster abandoned puppies (she currently has 10 at her home in Idaho) and is staunchly anti-puppy farms.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate will hold a crucial test vote next week on legislation that would pair new policies at the southern border with wartime aid for Ukraine and other American allies, leaders pressing ahead despite heavy skepticism from Republicans and some Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he will set in motion a test vote on the national security package for Wednesday. “Our southern border is in urgent need, in urgent need, of fixing,” Schumer said in a floor speech. The Senate readied to proceed towards a vote next week, but widespread support from Republicans, especially House Speaker Mike Johnson, remained doubtful. Many Senate Republicans have declined to offer support for the bill until they can dig into its details.

Adele Springsteen, who nurtured the budding musical talent of her son, the pioneering rock star Bruce Springsteen, died on Wednesday. No cause was given, but Ms. Springsteen had struggled for more than a decade with Alzheimer’s disease. Her son has been outspoken about his relationship with his mother and her influence on him. Ms. Springsteen rented him his first guitar when he was 7, he said in 2021 during his Broadway show, “Bruce on Broadway,” which ran for more than two months as the city began to emerge from pandemic-related closures. An investigator read portions of Ethan Crumbley's journal moments before jurors watched a partial video of the shooting, which left four students dead at Oxford High School in 2021. Unlike the jury, Jennifer Crumbley didn't look at the screen and instead cried with her forehead resting on her hands. “I have zero help for my mental problems and it's causing me to shoot up the ... school,” Ethan Crumbley, then 15, wrote in his journal. The Crumbleys are the first parents in the U.S. to be charged in a mass school shooting committed by their child. Their son stayed in school and later pulled a handgun from his backpack to fire at students.

Part motel, part new-age clinic, the facility offers nightly rentals in rooms that come equipped with “BioHealers” –- canisters that the company claims exude “life force energy,” or biophotons. “There are some forces driving that: obviously the internet and social media, and distrust of traditional medicine, traditional science. Given the primary importance of health, it’s hardly surprising that unproven medical claims and products that seem too-good-to-be-true have a long history in America. “ Distrust of government and distrust of major institutions makes people vulnerable,” said Stephen Barrett, a psychiatrist and expert in unproven medical claims who launched the organization Quackwatch in the 1970s to highlight medical scams. WASHINGTON (AP) — James Biden will appear before House Republicans for a private interview next month as lawmakers seek to regain some momentum in their monthslong impeachment inquiry into his brother, President Joe Biden. James Biden's interview will take place just days before the president's son Hunter Biden will be deposed in private by the Republican-run committee, which has been investigating the Biden family's overseas finances for the past year. The committee found records of two loans that were made when Joe Biden was not in office or a candidate for president. In nearly every interview the witnesses have stated that they have seen no evidence that Joe Biden was directly involved in his son or brother's business ventures. House Republicans have shifted their focus, for now, on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

CNN —A group of 19 predominantly Democratic lawmakers is calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to provide answers about why he bypassed Congress last month to approve arms sales to Israel. The top US diplomat made two emergency determinations in December to immediately approve the transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in military equipment to Israel. In their letter, the lawmakers noted the rarity of administrations using emergency declarations to immediately approve arms sales without congressional approval. “Use of a national emergency waiver does not exempt the U.S. government from assessing whether arms sales are consistent with” those standards, they wrote. I would say that the process that the secretary followed and the process that we follow here at the State Department is the process that the law actually prescribed,” Miller said at a State Department briefing.

Senate Republicans and Democrats have attempted to negotiate border-related legislation for weeks. Trump is pushing his supporters in Congress to kill the bill to gain an upper hand in the election. No public text has been released despite months of negotiations, even senators have complained that they are receiving few details from the discussions between Sen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, and Senate Democrats. "Using a one-time spending package to enact these unrelated permanent policy changes sets a dangerous precedent and risks assistance to our international partners," 11 Senate Democrats said in a statement about the talks. House Speaker Mike Johnson said it's "absurd" to suggest he would kill the talks to help Trump.

All five adults had growth hormone deficiency as children and received pituitary growth hormones prepared in a specific way from cadavers. The treatment approach was discontinued after cases of a rare brain disorder called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were found to be associated with the administration of contaminated human growth hormone from cadavers. Although Alzheimer’s is not a prion disease, some separate research suggests that the two proteins that are hallmarks in Alzheimer’s disease — amyloid beta and tau — behave like prions. “This study suggests that in very rare circumstances Alzheimer’s disease may be transmitted between humans via human growth hormone from deceased donors. “I’m also intrigued by how these results may inform potential therapeutic targets and strategies in the future,” Isaacson said, regarding Alzheimer’s disease.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It didn't take long for Southern California's Bronny James to make an impact in his first game against rival UCLA. The freshman blocked the shot of UCLA's Dylan Andrews as he drove to the basket, but the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James ended up celebrating a little too much. James picked up a technical foul with 12:06 remaining in the first half when he yelled “give me that (stuff)" toward Andrews and the crowd at the Galen Center. It was James' first technical foul in a collegiate game. James went to the bench after the technical before coming in later in the first half.

Biden, in a rare statement on ongoing congressional negotiations, said the deal that Senate negotiators have worked toward is both tough and fair. “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. Moreover, if crossings exceed 8,500 in a single day, DHS would be required to close the border to migrants illegally crossing the border. The source said if the new legislation were in effect, the border would be shut down now to illegal migrants. But a number of top Senate Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, say that the issue must be dealt with now since Democrats are willing to approve tougher restrictions.

“Transforming Spaces” is a series about women driving change in sometimes unexpected places. For decades, college students have found ways to mask the pungent aroma of marijuana smoke on campuses. It would be decades before Colorado became one of the first two states in the country to legalize recreational cannabis, but on campus, James never worried. “The worst that would happen is they would tell us to put it away, or they might take it from us, and that was the end of it,” Ms. James recalled of the campus police.
