Some may want to see the explosive, racist diatribes of a handful of prominent Los Angeles City Council members as an unfortunate incident that will eventually fade away. But the reality is that such prejudice from Latino to Latino and Latino to other racial groups is not so uncommon. That was on stark display in the conversation among former Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, council members Kevin De León and Gil Cedillo and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, who resigned Monday. "If you’re going to talk about Latino districts, what kind of districts are you trying to create?” she asks her colleagues in frustration. Zapotecs, or Indigenous people of Oaxacan descent, number about 200,000 in Los Angeles County, one of the largest Oaxacan communities outside Mexico.
The former president of the Los Angeles City Council at the center of a controversy over leaked audio of racist remarks announced her resignation from the elected board on Wednesday. “It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District 6, the community I grew up in and my home,” she said. No one expected me to win, but with the support of residents throughout the district I overcame that challenge and won the seat for Council District 6. In the leaked audio, Martinez likened the Black son of council member Mike Bonin, who was 2 years old at the time, to an animal. Since the Los Angeles Times first reported about the audio recording on Sunday, the controversy has grown into a national story.
The California attorney general announced Wednesday his office will investigate the Los Angeles City Council to determine whether any laws were broken after an audio recording of racist remarks surfaced this week. Martinez has resigned as council president, and she announced she is taking a leave of absence from the council, according to NBC Los Angeles. Bonta said in the statement he was “deeply appalled" by the remarks from some of Los Angeles’ highest-ranking officials. A council meeting Wednesday was also met with a hostile crowd that disrupted the beginning of the meeting more than once. “The leaked audio has cast doubt on a cornerstone of our political processes for Los Angeles," Bonta said in the Wednesday statement.
Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso insisted he's not white, but really Italian — and thus "Latin" — during an awkward debate moment Tuesday in the nation's second-largest city. Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso speaks at Emerson College Los Angeles on Oct. 7, 2022. The mayoral hopeful said he's, for decades, led efforts to bring more education opportunities and healthcare to Black and Latino communities in Los Angeles. "I connect with the Latino community but quite frankly my job as mayor is to connect with every community — the Latino community, the Black community, the Asian community, right? Caruso' "Latin" identity comment drew a harsh reaction, ranging from scorn to mockery.

Today’s sorry lesson about crime and impunity in America’s cities comes courtesy of Washington, D.C., where the farebox on the bus is more like an offering plate. More than a third of the bus trips now being taken involve fare evasion, but last week the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said it will crack down beginning in November. The Metro transit authority says free riders are committing a criminal offense if they’re in the Virginia and Maryland suburbs that surround the capital. But some four years ago, the D.C. City Council decriminalized fare evasion over a mayoral veto. Within city limits, fare dodgers face a mere $50 civil citation.

Martinez and de León and other Latino council members apologized Sunday after The Los Angeles Times reported that they had been taped making racist comments in a private meeting. The candidates most targeted by political violence and threats tend to be Black women and LGBT people, especially trans women, said researcher Cesar Munoz of Human Rights Watch. "Attacks on trans candidates, especially threats against transfeminine identities are much more intense, violent and numerous than against any other candidate," said Benavides of Rio de Janeiro-based ANTRA. "Political parties often don't take these threats seriously, especially against trans women," Munoz said. Reuters interviewed eight trans and travesti candidates who reported threats and intimidation on the campaign trail.
At a private dinner Wednesday at New York's swanky Le Pavillon, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called on tech executives to keep their companies in the city, even as industry leaders raise concerns to city officials of soaring rents and an increase in violent crime. He told the more than two dozen tech leaders: "New York City needs and wants technology companies," another attendee said, adding that city officials want tech companies to "help grow the economy of this city." Adams' spokesman Fabien Levy confirmed the mayor spoke to the tech executives, but said, "Mayor Adams wasn't there for dinner." "While we don't discuss private conversations, Mayor Adams always welcomes and encourages businesses to come to NYC," Levy said in an email. Conway said in an interview, noting that it's important for tech leaders and companies to be civically engaged.
A new analysis found the Norwegian capital, Oslo, to be the world's best city for work-life balance. The top six cities for work-life balance as determined by the software company Kisi were all European, and no US city ranked in the top 10. According to Kisi's data, workers in Oslo take on average 25 days of vacation a year and get 707 days of paid parental leave. The city also scored highly for remote working, quality and availability of healthcare, and air quality. The surge in remote working means some people have used the past two years as an opportunity to relocate.

Chinezul a crescut cu realizările lui Leo și și-a propus să-l aducă în Italia cu orice preț. Gazzetta dello Sport a dezvăluit, în vară, și detaliile mutării lui Messi pe Giuseppe Meazza.
