Musk calls for people to register to vote
  + stars: | 2024-10-05 | by ( Daniel Strauss | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —In his first appearance with Donald Trump on the campaign trail, billionaire Elon Musk on Saturday called on people to register to vote as he cast Democrats as a threat to democracy. “Register to vote, OK? Drag them to register to vote. There’s only two days left to register to vote in Georgia and Arizona. And then make sure they actually do vote,” Musk said at the former president’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Trump plans ‘different’ eventFive days after the shooting, as Trump captivated Republicans in his convention speech in Milwaukee, the former president vowed to never again mention details of the assassination attempt. “Everybody up there, they were amazing,” Trump told the Erie crowd, some of whom cheered when he asked if any of them had been present at the Butler rally. They saw that we were in trouble.”The event Saturday at Butler Farm Show Inc. is expected to be “different” from a typical Trump rally, a senior Trump campaign adviser told CNN. Harris is blasting Trump on health care in Wisconsin, while Trump is hammering Harris on taxes in Georgia. One focus of Harris’ campaign is Latino voters in Pennsylvania, in a bid to stop Trump from eating away at Democrats’ traditionally large margins of victory among non-White voters.

Former President Barack Obama is wading into the Senate race in Michigan, endorsing Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and starring in a new ad for her as some voters start to receive absentee ballots in the critical state. It’s the first time this election that voters will see a Senate ad from Obama as Democrats try to keep hold of the chamber, where they hold a 51-49 advantage. In the new ad, called “Make You Proud,” Obama underscores Slotkin’s national security experience before she represented Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “In the Situation Room, Elissa delivered national security briefings on some of the toughest issues we were dealing with. That’s why I sent Elissa to negotiate on my behalf because she understood when to compromise and when to stand firm,” Obama says in the ad.

Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris in Pittsburgh next week, his first foray into the election as a battleground-state surrogate. The event, according to a senior Harris campaign official, will launch a larger effort by Obama, who intends to ramp up his campaigning for Harris in the final stretch of the election cycle. “President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Democrats across the country,” Eric Schulz, a senior adviser to Obama, said in a statement. Harris and Obama’s relationship spans two decades, with the two first meeting as Obama was seeking election to the Senate in 2004. Grassroots fundraising content signed by Obama and events featuring him have generated more than $76 million for the campaign this cycle, a second senior Harris campaign official said.

In New York City, a group of veteran journalists are trying to fill the gap. The group is tentatively called the New York Editorial Board, according to Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who helped assemble it in recent weeks. The self-styled board – “a group of journalists grilling politicians,” Smith said – is partly a reaction to The New York Times’ announcement in August that its editorial board will no longer endorse candidates in New York’s local elections. The timing is especially notable in the wake of last week’s indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, raising the possibility of a nonpartisan special election if he resigns. Politicians, they hope, will feel obliged to participate given the prominence of the local journalists going back generations.

Samaras said his research indicated that drone delivery, compared to fossil-fuel truck delivery, consumes up to 90% less energy per package. Zipline, the world’s largest drone delivery service, is among the companies that have received that permission in several states. The company plans to go nationwide with drone delivery in 2026. A spokesperson for Amazon’s Prime Air drone-delivery program told NBC News it hopes to be delivering 500 million packages per year by the end of this decade. The FAA told NBC News that there are currently more than 383,000 drones registered for commercial purposes.

New York CNN —Additional charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams are “possible” and it’s “likely” there will be additional defendants charged as part of the alleged scheme in the federal corruption case, a prosecutor said Wednesday at a court hearing. Federal prosecutor Hagan Scotten said they have evidence that Adams attempted to tamper with a witness in the investigation. The federal prosecutor revealed new information about the investigation, saying it began in the summer of 2021 before Adams became mayor. The additional defendants could be charged in a superseding indictment or in a separate case, Scotten added. However, weather-related events like Hurricane Helene are generally considered to be outside an airline’s control, meaning passengers have relatively few rights to compensation, experts said. Airlines make concessions in some casesSome airlines are making concessions tied to Hurricane Helene, though they vary by carrier and geography. For example, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have alerts about flooding in the Southeast. American Airlines is also giving leeway to passengers scheduled to travel through Augusta, Georgia, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4.
