On Monday, LA28 organisers formally asked that flag football for both the men's and women's competitions as well as four other sports be added to the event. It would mark the Olympic debut for flag football, a game that looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. "But I will tell you that through this process a number of great young stars of the league have said how great it would be to represent their country and play flag." O'Reilly said one appeal of flag football is that it is low cost and that almost anyone can play it. "The Olympics in LA would be a tremendous boost to flag football around the world and in this country."

Stores are starting their busiest time of year as customers look for help with colds and the flu. Some drugstores have addressed their challenges by adding employees at busy hours. Chris Adkins said he left his job as a pharmacist with a major drugstore chain a couple years ago because of the stress. Labor strife and staffing shortages in health care are not isolated to drugstores, as the recent Kaiser Permanente strike shows. All told, CVS touts in a pharmacy counter brochure that the company can offer more than 15 vaccines to customers.

Head Start programs, which serve over 10,000 children across the nation, would lose funding. If the shutdown isn't averted, Head Start programs serving more than 10,000 children would immediately lose federal funding, including Ferguson's program. This is a particular concern with nearly 20% of Head Start staff positions vacant nationwide, according to the National Head Start Association. The 16-day October 2013 shutdown was the last to hit Head Start hard, affecting 19,000 children and shuttering programs in several states. Laketia Washington, a mother of eight whose 3- and 5-year-olds attend Head Start programs in Tallahassee, Florida, lamented the turmoil as she rang up customers at a discount store.

Lower rent prices and multi-decade-high mortgage rates mean that it's smarter to rent than buy in most large US cities right now, according to Realtor.com. Disparities between buying and renting stemmed from a split in how median costs changed in the last 12 months. "The advantage of renting became more pronounced in all rent-favoring markets," Xu and Hale wrote. But there were three cities where buying was actually cheaper than renting in August, according to Realtor.com: Memphis, Tennessee; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Birmingham, Alabama. Below are the 10 metro areas where renting makes more sense than buying right now, along with the median rent, the median monthly cost of buying and how it compares to renting, and the year-over-year changes for renting and buying.

When picking dividend-paying stocks to stabilize your portfolio in tumultuous times, don't just go for higher yields — look for the growers, according to Morgan Stanley. Dividend-paying stocks have outperformed nondividend payers across all large-cap sectors going back to 2000, except for consumer discretionary, Morgan Stanley said. Energy Transfer , a company that operates in the natural gas pipeline industry, is rated overweight by Morgan Stanley analyst Robert Kad. Morgan Stanley also likes Mondelez International , the company behind Sour Patch Kids candy and Oreo cookies. Morgan Stanley anticipates banks will be able to grow their dividends about 5% in 2024.

Medicaid, the federal and state health insurance program for the poor, requires states to provide dental coverage for children but not adults. While dental care often is seen as routine, the poor often go without any care for years or even decades. In New Hampshire, the state is spending $33.4 million over 12 months to provide dental care to its 88,000 Medicaid recipients. Andy Beshear pressed ahead with emergency regulations ensuring that about 900,000 Kentuckians would continue having access to dental care after the Republican-led legislature rejected his proposal. A mother of five, she figured dental care would take away from spending on her children.

New Home Construction Tumbles in August
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( Tim Smart | Sept. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
The pace of new construction slowed in August amid high mortgage rates and weakening demand, the federal government reported on Tuesday. Housing starts fell 11.3% in August to an annual rate of 1.28 million, the lowest since the summer of 2020. Builders typically pull permits in anticipation of demand, but housing starts occur when lots are ready to be cleared following deposits on future purchases. “The combination of high interest rates, high pricing, and limited inventory has continued to plague the housing market. “And on the supply-side front, builders continue to grapple with shortages of construction workers, buildable lots and distribution transformers, which is further adding to housing affordability woes.

U.S. homebuilders are feeling pessimistic about their business for the first time in seven months, thanks to stubbornly high mortgage rates. Builder confidence in the single-family housing market fell 5 points in September to 45 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. Current sales conditions fell 6 points to 51, and sales expectations in the next six months also dropped 6 points to 49. Builders cite weaker affordability due to higher mortgage rates. While builders are still benefiting from the lack of supply on the existing sales market, they are also facing hurdles other than higher interest rates.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court’s decision siding with Black voters in an Alabama redistricting case gave Democrats and voting rights activists a surprising opportunity before the 2024 elections. Khadidah Stone, a plaintiff in the Alabama case, said the continuing opposition was “appalling” but “not surprising.” She noted that Alabama is where then-Gov. A similar dynamic is playing out in Florida, where Republicans are appealing a ruling favorable to Black voters to the Republican-majority state Supreme Court. But the continued pushback from Republican legislatures in control of redistricting means there is great uncertainty about whether –- or how soon -– new maps offering equal representation for Black voters will be drawn.
