Culture issues, ineptitude and poor leadership at General Motors' Cruise autonomous vehicle unit were at the center of regulatory oversights and coverup concerns that have plagued the company since October, according to the findings of a third-party probe. Results of the investigation, which reviewed whether Cruise representatives misled investigators or members of the media in discussing the incident, were published Thursday in a 105-page report. "This conduct has caused both regulators and the media to accuse Cruise of misleading them," the report stated. Quinn Emanuel, the business litigation firm that Cruise retained to conduct the three-month investigation, interviewed 88 Cruise employees and reviewed more than 200,000 documents, including emails, texts, Slack messages and more. The firm is known for representing high-profile celebrities and business owners, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

(Photo by VCG/VCG via Getty Images)China's youth unemployment will likely stay elevated this year due to a lingering mismatch, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. Even though unemployment among China's young people should dissipate starting next year — when the country's working-age population declines – the effects of high youth unemployment will remain long after that, the consultancy added. "Despite the upturn in China's labor market as a whole, the biggest improvements are concentrated in middle-aged groups and migrant workers," EIU analysts said in their China 2024 outlook report released Thursday. "In contrast, the post‑Covid recovery has not eased the slack in the youth labor market.

The Suez Canal accounts for 10-15% of world trade, which includes oil exports, and for 30% of global container shipping volumes. Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc told the Financial Times Thursday that re-establishing safe passage through the Red Sea could take “months.” “It could potentially have quite significant consequences on global (economic) growth,” he added. Ikea has warned of shipment delays and potential shortages of certain products due to disruption in the Red Sea. Some ocean carriers that ordinarily transit through the Panama Canal had rerouted to the Suez Canal before the attacks in the Red Sea escalated, according to logistics company C.H. Matthew Burgess, vice-president of global ocean services at the firm, said global shipping capacity would be constrained for a while yet.

While I don't think AI is going to solve everything, I'm really excited for the role that AI is going to play in making work better. AI is really going to help people balance their workday. I think that's really going to help people clear their day and stop spending so much time on those more routine tasks that could just be automated. I think it's also going to give us an opportunity to think about productivity in a much more meaningful way. You have to really think about how you're structuring your day in order to maximize productivity.

Now, though, a massive new study published in the journal Nature has shed new light on the effect of remote work on innovation. Even though remote work is a relatively new development in corporate settings, scientists and inventors have been collaborating over long distances for decades. On remote teams, by contrast, the more established collaborators tended to come up with the original idea on their own. And just because remote collaboration didn't work for innovation in the past doesn't necessarily mean it won't work in the future. But the study's findings — given the remarkable sweep of the data it examined — do suggest some guidance for companies in the age of remote work.

Salesforce has moved slowly on AI, RBC Capital Markets managing director Rishi Jaluria told Insider — at least that's what the company's partners and customers told him. One said they were encouraging customers to start first with Einstein, the original AI product Salesforce launched in 2016, before adding new generative-AI services to their bills. The question was the first of many moments during the conference when a Salesforce executive brought up trust and safety when talking about generative AI. Despite that, Salesforce continues to invest in other companies via its venture arm, which includes a $500 million Generative AI fund. Jaluria said that with the exception of Microsoft, he doesn't expect software companies to see meaningful revenue gains from generative AI until at least 2025.

A passageway near the Bank of England (BOE) in the City of London, U.K., on Thursday, March 18, 2021. The market is pricing an almost 100% chance of a hold on Thursday, according to LSEG, with economic data since the Bank's last meeting proving largely inconclusive. The latest labor market data on Tuesday indicated a continuation of recent trends, with unemployment remaining broadly flat and vacancies continuing to decline at pace. Average pay including bonuses fell by 1.6% between September and October, versus an average monthly growth rate of 1.1% in the first half of the year. "An unchanged forward guidance will also serve the MPC well to push against the current market pricing of Bank Rate which assigns an increasing probability to cuts in H1 2024," they said.
