More than $200 billion in assets track the JPMorgan Emerging Market Index in which India will eventually have a weight of 10% by March 2025, suggesting total passive inflows of at least $20 billion over the 10-month period. Since there is no precedent for these debt index-related inflows, bankers' estimates of the timing of flows are based on similar index adjustments in the equity markets. "Obviously, all this is a first and you can't be sure how things will be," the head of trading at a large foreign bank cautioned. In anticipation, large foreign banks could look at building short dollar/rupee positions to help manage inflows when they happen, an FX trader at a foreign bank said. As a senior banker at a large foreign bank said: "all the pipes that have been put in place might not work."

A freight train collided with a passenger train in eastern India on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring 50 others, officials said. Four coaches of the popular and often-crowded passenger train derailed when it was rammed from behind by the commercial train. Images from the accident site showed one of the passenger coaches lifted off the railway track and balancing on a coach of the freight train. The driver and the assistant driver of the freight train and a guard on the passenger train were among those killed. Jaya Varma Sinha, the chairperson of India’s railway board, said rescue operations were completed.

The world’s biggest car market after China and the United States is the company’s third-biggest revenue generator globally. Hyundai India also said it wants to ship more cars, “strengthening” its position as an export hub. The South Korean parent will sell up to 142 million of the total 812 million shares, or 17.5%, in the IPO. With the IPO, Hyundai aims to unlock value for the Indian business and also help the Korean automaker shed its valuation discount compared to global and Asian peers. Hyundai is being advised on the IPO by investment banks Citi, JP Morgan, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and India’s Kotak.
