Rucking appealed to me because it seemed like a simple way to make my daily lunchtime walks more efficient. That said, it doesn't look like a normal backpack, so I did get a few strange looks as I strolled around the rural village where I live on a weekday lunchtime. It felt very different from carrying a normal backpack, too, likely due to the weight and its positioning. AdvertisementI also learned that the ruck isn't something I will just always throw on when going for my daily walk. It ended up being a great workout, and definitely left me with aching muscles the next day.

What is the world of these young men that makes violence on such a scale seem an appropriate response? CNN —Scientists have long theorized the existence of lunar caves — underground passageways formed through volcanic processes that are connected to the pits covering the moon’s surface. Now, a team of international researchers has found the first direct evidence that the moon’s deepest known pit connects to a cave that could provide shelter to astronauts. “Lunar caves have remained a mystery for a long time. Future research and exploration of lunar caves could also provide new insight into the evolution of the moon and lunar volcanism, the authors note in the study. “Moreover, (lunar caves) can be an alternative or an integration to a base on the surface of the Moon,” he added.

This Is Literally Your Brain on Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Andrew Jacobs | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The image, as it happens, comes from dozens of brain scans produced by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis who gave psilocybin, the compound in “magic mushrooms,” to participants in a study before sending them into a functional M.R.I. The kaleidoscopic whirl of colors they recorded is essentially a heat map of brain changes, with the red, orange and yellow hues reflecting a significant departure from normal activity patterns. The blues and greens reflect normal brain activity that occurs in the so-called functional networks, the neural communication pathways that connect different regions of the brain. The scans, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, offer a rare glimpse into the wild neural storm associated with mind-altering drugs. “Psilocybin, in contrast to any other drug we’ve tested, has this massive effect on the whole brain that was pretty unexpected,” said Dr. Nico Dosenbach, a professor of neurology at Washington University and a senior author of the study.

The 2020 Republican National Convention featured a procession of minority speakers that was, as reported at the time, almost certainly unprecedented. It would be easy to mock this week’s lineup of speakers of color as mostly performative, but you would be wrong to do so. Republicans are strategically — almost surgically — trying to carve away minority voters from Democrats. Let’s recall how we got here: In 2013, not long after losing a second presidential election to Barack Obama, Republicans produced a 100-page report titled the “Growth and Opportunity Project,” often called the Republican autopsy. It chastised the party for “driving around in circles on an ideological cul-de-sac” and insisted that it must broaden its appeal to minority voters: “We need to campaign among Hispanic, Black, Asian and gay Americans and demonstrate we care about them, too.”

However, with a sticker price of nearly $80,000 per year, including tuition, fees, and room and board, Montiel-García, like many college hopefuls, needed financial aid to bring the cost down. Because of problems with the new form, financial aid award letters were delayed and some high school seniors, like Montiel-García, had trouble applying for any aid at all. In previous years, financial aid award letters were sent out at about the same time as admission letters, meaning students had several weeks to compare offers ahead of National College Decision Day, the deadline for most admitted students to decide on a college. Because of the extensive delays this year, some students won't get their final financial aid award letter until the end of August, the U.S. Department of Education said in a recent update. The high school graduate from Riverdale Park, Maryland, secured enough additional funding from the Maryland College Aid Processing System to afford his top choice school: Towson University.

Shortly after they’re born, infants are assigned an Apgar score, a measure of how well they’re adapting to life outside the womb. One of them is skin color, an indication of how much oxygen the baby is getting. A newborn gets two points only if he or she is pink all over. Pale or blue fingers and toes earn one point; a baby who is white, gray or blueish all over gets none. But an accumulating body of research has found that Black infants and other babies of color don’t score as well on the Apgar as white infants.

Though she cited its circulation benefits following a severe blood-clot scare with the birth of her child, the French Open said it would bar the style in the future. Since President Biden’s poor debate performance last month, many news outlets have pondered who could supplant him on the Democratic ticket if he were to step aside. Media organizations across the political spectrum have pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential replacement — although a risky one. Many liberal news outlets have been hesitant to anoint a potential successor. But as they discuss the possible outcomes, some have started playing up Ms. Harris’s perceived strengths compared with Mr. Biden’s. Conservative publications have stepped up their criticisms of Ms. Harris, admonishing her record as vice president as well as making racist attacks, claiming she would be a disaster for the country if elected.
