Takeaways from the RNC’s last night

CNN —On a night Republicans projected bravado around their 2024 presidential ticket, Donald Trump started his prime-time address by displaying a rare vulnerability. The former president’s son Eric Trump delivered conservative red meat, much like his brother Donald Trump Jr. had a night earlier. Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. And especially so on its final night, when the politicians mostly gave way to right-leaning celebrities.

America’s Unstable Politics
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
American politics was more stable for the past half-century than it had been for most of the country’s history. But yesterday’s remarkable events — in both Washington and Milwaukee, among both Democrats and Republicans — showed how unstable our politics have become. Biden himself has begun to accept the idea that he may have to drop out of the race, people close to him told The Times. Trump gave a speech that was both personal and rambling and that highlighted how different he is from any other recent president. He also demonstrated how he transformed the party over the past decade into a populist-sounding, antiwar, immigration-skeptical movement that Ronald Reagan would hardly recognize.

It was also Trump's first speech since he named Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate. As Trump's speech continued, the UAW fired back, calling him a "scab and a billionaire." — UAW (@UAW) July 19, 20247. Displaying it again roughly an hour into his speech, Trump described it as "the chart that saved my life." It was the longest presidential nomination acceptance speech in recorded historyAt 92 minutes, Trump's speech on Thursday night appeared to be the longest ever delivered by a major party's presidential nominee.

“Just a few short days ago, my journey with you nearly ended, we know that,” Trump said. Or we fall apart.”But the new Trump lasted just a few minutes before the old version returned. “Our planet is teetering on the edge of World War III and this will be a war like no other,” said Trump. Another top Democrat close to the White House described Biden as having become “exceptionally insulated and isolated” since the CNN debate in Atlanta on June 27. “I have worked with President Biden when it has made Montana stronger, and I’ve never been afraid to stand up to him when he is wrong.

This source said the sentiment only grew Friday when Lofgren, Pelosi’s longtime close lieutenant, released her letter urging Biden to step aside. CNN has reached out to Pelosi’s camp and the Biden campaign for comment on this reporting. And Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon went on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday morning to say Biden was “absolutely” in the race. “Joe Biden is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump.”Instead, there was a stream of new statements from House Democrats. A Democratic lawmaker told CNN that House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his team are not discouraging members from continuing to speak out against Biden’s candidacy.

The crowds inside the hall in downtown Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention this week reflected the mood of the party: unified, abundant, exhilarated. If the state of the opposition could be summed up by the demonstrations outside the arena, it was quite the opposite: disjointed, sparse, gloomy. Protests through the week in Milwaukee have appeared far smaller and less energetic than those at past national conventions. At the last in-person Republican convention, in 2016, a coalition of protesters rallied in Cleveland for days, angry over the nomination of former President Donald J. Trump. That week was marked by scuffles, standoffs with police and the burning of an American flag outside the convention hall.

Here are some key things to know about Trump’s VP pick:Once a Trump critic CNN reported last month that Vance liked tweets in 2016 and 2017 that harshly criticized Trump and his policies. Pivot to support Trump “Like a lot of people, I criticized Trump back in 2016,” Vance told CNN in 2021. Vance earlier this year told ABC he would not have certified the 2020 election results until states submitted pro-Trump electors. He committed to accepting the 2024 election results in May in an interview with CNN, provided it’s a “free and fair election” and despite the winner.

JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

In other words: the 2024 drought appears to be over as Americans show renewed interest in a race that has suddenly been thrown into upheaval. GET RELIABLE SOURCES IN YOUR INBOX A daily digest chronicling the evolving media landscape with uncompromising reporting and analysis. The CNN debate averaged 51 million viewers, networks averaged about 19 million viewers after Trump was shot, and the first night of the RNC averaged 18 million viewers. To be clear, the television ratings and interest generated by the twists and turns of the 2024 election have not been historic by any means. But the startling news cycle has, unquestionably, breathed life into what had been a sleepy race, offering jolts to the system.

Deputy White House chief of staff Annie Tomasini, a longtime aide to the Bidens, joins Donilon and Ricchetti in forming a protective bubble around the president. “The phones just kind of stopped ringing,” is how one senior Democrat put it. “Staff in general are just over the leadership here,” one White House official said. Inside the White House, senior administration officials are bracing for Republicans to call for Biden to resign the presidency if he doesn’t seek reelection. With Biden’s political future on the brink, the White House is fielding a steady stream of letters, telephone calls and message from Americans, too, from Democratic voters like Terri and John Hale.

All of a sudden, Tucker Carlson has roared back to the forefront of Republican politics. Once the top-rated anchor on Fox News — only to be abruptly ousted 15 months ago, his national platform yanked out from under his feet — Mr. Carlson has made an improbable re-emergence into America’s living rooms at this week’s Republican National Convention. He is even returning to prime time: Mr. Carlson is set to deliver a televised address to the convention on Thursday in a coveted slot shortly before Mr. Trump accepts his party’s nomination. Mr. Carlson once electrified Fox viewers with racial grievances and flimflam conspiracy theories. But behind the scenes over the past year, Mr. Carlson has become more deeply allied with Mr. Trump than at any point in his long relationship with the former president, a man for whom the broadcaster once expressed deep ambivalence.

CNN —The final night of the Republican National Convention has kicked off in Milwaukee. Pompeo’s claim about the southern border under TrumpFormer Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed at the Republican National Convention Thursday that the US-Mexico border was “closed” during Donald Trump’s presidency. Facts First: This characterization of Trump’s tariffs is misleading. It’s true that Trump’s tariffs on China raised billions of dollars for the US government, but the duties were paid by US companies – not China. For example, Trump’s tariffs were imposed, in part, to boost the US manufacturing sector – but that industry lost jobs.

A full public assessment of Trump’s injuries is necessary, for both the former president’s own health and the clarity it can provide for voters about the recovery of the man who could become president of the United States once again. US Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former White House physician, said during an interview Monday on “The Benny Show” podcast, that he “checked out” the wound to Trump’s ear and bandaged it himself. We have worked with the Secret Service in the past and local and federal law enforcement to come up with plans about if an incident like this happened,” Rottinghaus told CNN. In the Monday interview, Jackson said Trump’s injury was “dressed up. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump couldn't be farther apart when it comes to climate action. Trump and his pick for vice president, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are both climate deniers. By contrast, the Democrats unveiled a platform that said it would build on the Biden administration's unprecedented spending on renewable energy and the green workforce while cracking down on the oil-and-gas industry. The center conducted the survey with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. The majority of Americans support climate actionMaibach said the shift among Republicans shouldn't distract from the fact that the majority of Americans support many of Biden's climate policies.

The legal proceedings are themselves on trial, on hold or in the process of being dismissed. More strikingly, the case Mr. Trump would have made for himself in his acceptance speech as a witness, a martyr to serial partisan persecution, has suddenly been transcended. It was shoved aside by the would-be assassin’s bullet, which came within an inch of its target, drawing blood but not brain. The scene instantly recalled worse American tragedies — the assassinations of John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, the Rev. Never Trumpers have frequently accused Mr. Trump of lacking courage — sometimes because he has never faced death on the battlefield.

Donald Trump elevated JD Vance to the national stage as his running mate on Monday — and Ukraine is likely worried. Exactly seven weeks ago, Donald J. Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts in Manhattan, an unprecedented conviction of a former president that looked like a political rock bottom. Since then, the Supreme Court handed him a critical legal victory that threw those felony convictions and more cases into limbo. President Biden’s disastrous debate plunged the Democratic Party into a rolling crisis. Thursday night, when Mr. Trump accepts the Republican presidential nomination for the third time, will be the culmination of an extraordinary run of good fortune and a testament to his political instincts. His address will also in many ways serve as the Republican Party’s coronation of a leader who went from rattling the conservative establishment to refashioning it entirely in his image.

Much has been made of the political pirouette J.D. Vance executed to secure the embrace of Donald J. Trump, a man he once called “cultural heroin” before seeking his endorsement for the Senate and, Wednesday night, accepting the Republican nomination to be his vice president. Old friends and former classmates have expressed bewilderment at the seemingly irreconcilable versions of Mr. Vance. Mr. Vance used his personal account of overcoming dysfunctional Appalachian family values to tell a larger story about forgotten Americans. In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, he leaned again into those themes, at one point drawing attention to his mother, “who struggled with money and addiction but never gave up.” She stood in the audience when he continued, “And I’m proud to say that tonight my mom is here, 10 years clean and sober.”
