France on a tightrope as knockout phase looms
  + stars: | 2022-12-01 | by ( Julien Pretot | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Until then, with Deschamps having made nine changes to the team who secured their spot in the knockout phase with a 2-1 win against Denmark, France looked clueless and were overwhelmed in the midfield. LACK OF 'COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE'"I know I haven't put them in the best conditions with all these changes because they don't have a collective experience," said Deschamps. The Liverpool centre back appeared a level above all his team mates, especially Varane, and it is a safe bet to say that Deschamps might consider fielding him from the start alongside Dayot Upamecano. "Another tournament is starting now," said Deschamps - which may come as a relief to France watchers after Wednesday's performance. Pochettino, who is well aware of Messi's game-changing abilities having worked with the 35-year-old last season, said he was still the best player in the world. He's the best player in the world," Pochettino, 50, told Argentine newspaper Ole. "Messi has the role today that can give Argentina the World Cup. After their setback against Saudi Arabia and a crucial win over Mexico, Argentina will play their final group game against Poland on Wednesday.
Tunisia needed not only to beat the already-qualified France but to hope for Denmark to avoid defeat against Australia in the other Group D game to advance. Tunisia thus keep their unwanted record of not progressing from the group stage in six World Cup appearances. Tunisia's win also ended France's six-match winning streak at the World Cup. Khazri said Tunisia were ending their World Cup journey with a "bittersweet feeling" - delighted to have beaten France but heartbroken by the outcome of the other group game. Mbappe and Griezmann energised the French, who were aided by Tunisia sitting back in the hope of preserving their win.
AL RAYYAN, Qatar, Nov 29 (Reuters) - England marched into the last 16 of the World Cup as Group B winners after Marcus Rashford's double and a Phil Foden strike justified their first starts of the tournament in a 3-0 hammering of an outclassed Wales on Tuesday. Wales could have reached the last 16 with a victory if the match between Iran and the United States ended level but any hope of that scenario unfolding evaporated rapidly once Rashford smashed home a free kick five minutes after the break. Wales, whose talisman Gareth Bale was substituted at halftime having made no impact, looked crestfallen as their first World Cup for 64 years fizzled out. England continued to dish out the punishment though and Rashford made it 3-0 with a surging run in from the right before shooting through a crowd and past Ward's legs in the 68th. "We were a little bit disappointed after the USA result and it was important to have a good performance the next game.
DOHA, Nov 28 (Reuters) - France will look to strike the right balance between resting players and keeping their World Cup momentum going when they take on Tunisia in their final Group D game on Wednesday. Should they finish first, they will face the team who end up second in Group C, which features Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Poland and Mexico. Coach Didier Deschamps is set to rest some of his key men and give fringe players minutes at the Education City Stadium. The centre back returned from a hamstring injury for the second game and was substituted in the second half. We'll think about what's best for the team first, then we'll see what's best for me," Varane told reporters.
DOHA, Nov 27 (Reuters) - French defender Raphael Varane warned against comparing his team's performance in Qatar with their run to victory in the 2018 World Cup, saying times had changed. The difficulty of a World Cup is that the players are different, they are in different shape. Varane said constant factors on the French team were their humility, serious work ethic and raw talent. Tunisia, who drew against Denmark and lost to Australia, should be regarded as serious opponents, Varane said. In the last 16, France will face one of the teams from Group C -- Poland, Saudi Arabia, Mexico or Argentina.
Griezmann has played as an attacking midfielder rather than a pure forward, brilliantly making the link between midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot and the attacking trio of Ousmane Dembele, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe. Griezmann played mainly deep, but also often close to lone striker Giroud or even on the flanks. I'm impressed but not surprised. Like Dembele, Griezmann played selflessly, leaving the limelight to Mbappe. "I'm proud of myself yes but I'm also proud of the whole team.
World Cup 2022: Argentina's route to title explained

Dec 18 (Reuters) - Argentina won their third World Cup trophy after the final in Qatar on Sunday. Here is what you need to know about their route to the title:HOW DID ARGENTINA QUALIFY FOR THE ROUND OF 16? HOW DID ARGENTINA REACH THE SEMI-FINALS? HOW DID ARGENTINA REACH THE FINAL? * In the penalty shootout, Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman's effort and Aurelien Tchouameni fired wide to give Argentina their first world title since 1986, and third overall.
"The first objective has been achieved," French coach Didier Deschamps said of their qualification in a post-match TV interview. France take on Tunisia and Denmark meet Socceroos in the final round on Wednesday, with the Danes needing a win to advance. Having lost twice to Denmark during the recent Nations League campaign, France started cautiously. But it was not long before they realised there were opportunities to be had by taking on the Danish wing backs. The French will face one of the teams from Group C - Poland, Saudi Arabia, Mexico or Argentina - in the last 16.
In 2018, Dembele had lost his place in the starting XI after a poor performance in the first game of the group stage. "In 2018, I was going through tough years," he said this week, admitting that he now had a healthier lifestyle. "Well it's not like I was being crazy, but I'm watching myself much more now. Dembele was the first to bring danger in the second half with yet another dazzling run before setting up Mbappe for a potential opener with a silky pass from the penalty spot. Dembele is likely to be on the bench against Tunisia on Wednesday in Les Bleus's final group game, getting a well-deserved rest ahead of the knockout stage where he undoubtedly will catch the eye again.
DOHA, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Kylian Mbappe's meteoric rise showed no sign of stopping as the France forward sealed the holders' 2-1 win against Denmark to send them into the last 16 of the World Cup on Saturday. Mbappe has now scored 31 goals in 61 appearances for France - well on the way towards the all-time record of 51 held by Olivier Giroud and Thierry Henry. Mbappe has seven goals at World Cup tournaments - only behind Just Fontaine, who scored a record 13 in 1958, and already ahead of Henry's six in four visits to the finals. He is part of a collective that is very strong and has this goal of winning the World Cup in mind," Deschamps added. For the first goal, he benefited from fullback Hernandez's threat on the left wing to pounce after their one-two.
Nov 24 (Reuters) - France striker Kylian Mbappe is yet to understand that his Paris St Germain team mates Lionel Messi and Neymar are bigger players than him, Brazil defender Dani Alves said, as he urged the 23-year-old to make the most of their time together. Alves shared a dressing room at PSG with compatriot Neymar and a newly-arrived Mbappe between 2017 and 2019 and also played alongside Messi at Barcelona in a trophy-laden eight-year spell. Galtier said last month PSG had changed their system to test how their attacking trio of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar could work more effectively. "Neymar and Messi are unique: they see and do things nobody else sees or can do. Alves, who now plays for Pumas UNAM, said Mbappe should take advantage of playing with Messi and Neymar.
DOHA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - France midfielder Adrien Rabiot is enjoying quite the renaissance at the World Cup, four years after refusing to be called up as a reserve player for the tournament in Russia. He made an instant impact on Tuesday, scoring the first and setting up France's second goal in their 4-1 comeback win against Australia. Rabiot's influence on the side was comparable to that of Paul Pogba, who he is effectively replacing in the starting line-up after his Juventus team mate was ruled out injured. After rediscovering his form at Juve this season, Rabiot completed his redemption story in spectacular fashion on Tuesday on football's biggest stage. However, after Tuesday's performance Deschamps would be reluctant to deprive the team of Rabiot's assets further up the pitch.

Tournament favoritesOnly eight nations have ever won the men’s World Cup, many of which are among the favorites this time around. After being knocked out by England in the Euro 2020 semifinals, the team waltzed through World Cup qualification, winning nine of its 10 matches and conceding only three goals. In addition to making its World Cup debut, Qatar is a relatively unknown quantity with most of its players spending their careers in the nation’s top league. CNN —French superstar Kylian Mbappé says he considered quitting the France national team after Euro 2020, citing a lack of support after suffering racist abuse. The Paris Saint-Germain star said he told Le Graët: “I cannot play for people who think I’m a monkey. “This is the new France … It’s for that that I didn’t give up the national team. Mbappé and the FFF have been at loggerheads over the last year around the image rights for France’s national team players. Three months later, Le Graët told L’Équipe that the agreement on image rights would not change before the World Cup.

Late Danilo header earns PSG victory at Lorient

Nov 6 (Reuters) - Danilo's late header helped unbeaten Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain beat a lively Lorient side 2-1 at the Stade du Moustoir on Sunday, after Terem Moffi's brilliant second-half goal had cancelled out Neymar's early opener for the visitors. Lorient's top-scorer Moffi made amends nine minutes into the second half after being set up by Enzo Le Fee's through ball, rifling his shot over PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for his ninth league goal of the season. Moffi was inches away from putting Lorient ahead but his shot struck the crossbar and the hosts weathered an intense period of pressure from PSG before Danilo powered his header from Neymar's corner past Mannone in the 81st minute. PSG, with 38 points from 14 games, restored their five-point cushion over second-placed Lens while Lorient remained fourth, level on 27 points with Rennes before their Brittany rivals travel to Lille later on Sunday. CNN —Paris Saint-Germain’s attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar were in scintillating form as the French side qualified for the Champions League knockout stages with a 7-2 win against Maccabi Haifa. Messi and Mbappé both scored twice, while Neymar and Carlos Soler added goals in each half on top of an own goal from Sean Goldberg. READ: British LGBTQ activist Peter Tatchell protests outside the Qatar national museumMessi, Mbappé and Neymar all scored against Maccabi Haifa. Mbappé’s fine strike just after the hour mark made it 5-2, taking him to six Champions League goals this season – one more than Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah at the top of the scoring charts. Mbappé is now the top scorer in this season's Champions League.
But, on Friday, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé combined for a sublime goal that seemed otherworldly in its precision and fluency. PSG took a 2-0 lead against Ajaccio with that goal in the 78th minute and eventually won 3-0, following a brace from Mbappé along with Messi’s outrageous goal. Kylian Mbappe celebrates with Lionel Messi. “Obviously, people come to the stadium to see Leo, the PSG team, Kylian,” PSG’s head coach Christophe Galtier told reporters afterwards. I say it often, but [Messi] is one of the best players in the history of football.
What sets him apart is that he understands innately something that Messi and Ronaldo had to learn on the fly: In order to be a global icon in the world’s most popular sport in 2022, it’s no longer enough just to play that sport. You must play it brilliantly, virally, and embrace everything that comes alongside it—a permanent reinvestment in your own image.
