CNN —Text messages between law enforcement before the assassination attempt against Donald Trump earlier this month suggest that some officers raised the shooter’s presence at the rally more than 90 minutes before he climbed onto a roof and fired eight rounds at the former president. If you wanna notify SS [Secret Service] snipers to look out. It’s also unclear how the Secret Service designated security that day and who managed the communication between local and federal law enforcement. “We were supposed to get a face-to-face briefing with the Secret Service members whenever they arrived, and that never happened,” Jason Woods, a sniper on the team, told ABC News. CNN has reached out to the Secret Service for comment.

Why do women’s haircuts cost more than men’s?
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Last year, the average cost for a standard women’s haircut was $51.71 compared with $34.56 for a men’s haircut across the United States, according to transaction data provided exclusively to CNN by Square, a payment systems provider. A man gets his hair cut in a barber shop in Colchester, United Kingdom. That report found the average cost of a women’s haircut ranging between $45 and $75 across the country, while men’s toggled between $25 and $50, though it did not specify whether the typical women’s haircut included extra services such as a blow dry. “When you go to cosmetology school to become a hair stylist, you learn to how to cut hair,” they told CNN. New research identifies the 10 best-performing US stocks since 1926. Of 29,000 US stocks traded since 1926, most had negative returns, but top performers showed consistent gains. Of course, identifying the 10 best-performing stocks for the next 100 years is nearly impossible, as the paper's author points out. "The majority (51.6%) of these stocks had negative cumulative returns," finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder of Arizona State University wrote. Bessembinder also observed that the 10 best-performing stocks delivered consistently modest annualized gains, reinforcing the slow and steady mantra championed by long-term investors.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —There is a notable absence among Novak Djokovic’s 98 career singles titles, but the Serbian star is hoping to change that over the coming weeks. In the end, Djokovic progressed with ease, potentially setting up a thrilling second-round match against Rafael Nadal. It’s a feat, sometimes described as a career golden slam, only achieved by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams in the women’s game. “Playing in the Olympic Games is very rare for us tennis players,” Djokovic told reporters, ”and of course for anybody, as it comes every four years. But experts and think tanks have long said this is a policy change that an aging China desperately needs. It's currently running a lopsided policy of letting women retire up to 10 years earlier despite them living significantly longer on average than men. The pension problemKey to the retirement overhaul are China's pension funds. AdvertisementMost Chinese workers receive a state pension, which can be boosted by retirement funds from employers and personal contributions. Experts say that either way, Beijing will need more than a simple policy change to fix its crisis.

Federal prosecutors and securities regulators filed criminal and civil fraud charges against a well-known investor who frequently appeared on cable TV business shows to discuss his often bearish views on stocks, the authorities said on Friday. They accused the investor, Andrew Left, of raking in at least $16 million in illegal profits from a multiyear scheme to manipulate market prices of roughly two dozen stocks on which his firm, Citron Research, had published reports. He is charged with illegally profiting through stock trades he made that were contrary to the public recommendations he was making to investors. The authorities in Los Angeles said Mr. Left essentially used a bait-and-switch strategy that was at odds with his Wall Street reputation of being a vocal short seller, with supposedly long-held negative views of the stocks on which he published critical reports. The charging documents said Mr. Left, 54, used his high profile on Wall Street to make quick profits from big price changes in a stock and misled investors by making them believe his economic interests were aligned with what he said in his reports.

China said Taiwanese workers in the mainland have nothing to fear if they "don't break the law." The comment comes as Beijing sparked alarm in June by floating the death penalty for 'diehard' separatists. About 163,000 Taiwanese worked in the mainland in 2021, per a local report, and the number is declining. The comment comes as Beijing issued legal guidelines on June 21 suggesting the death penalty or prison for "Taiwan independence diehards." The declaration sparked alarm in Taiwan, where officials started restricting tours to China and warning people against traveling to the mainland.

Former President Donald J. Trump, who for months has urged Israel to end the war in the Gaza Strip as quickly as possible, said that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel remained on good terms after the two met on Friday, and that he would be a stronger ally of Israel than Vice President Kamala Harris. Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Trump, who met in Palm Beach, Fla., were close allies during Mr. Trump’s presidency, but their ties became strained after the 2020 election. Even so, Mr. Netanyahu faces growing international criticism and pressure over Israel’s war effort, and his trip to shore up support fought against strong headwinds. Mr. Trump, in a Fox News interview on Thursday, said of the war in Gaza: “It can’t continue to go on like this. It’s too much.” Ms. Harris and President Biden met with Mr. Netanyahu on Thursday, and pressed, as they have for months, for a cease-fire that would provide for the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Harris Narrowed Trump’s Lead in Polls

Just a few days after becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris is virtually tied with her Republican rival, Donald Trump, according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll. The survey, which was conducted after President Biden announced that he was stepping aside, also showed that 70 percent of Democratic voters said they wanted the party to speedily consolidate behind her rather than engage in a more competitive and drawn-out process. Overall, Trump leads Harris 48 percent to 47 percent among likely voters nationwide. That’s roughly the same position Biden was in before his disastrous debate performance in June, but it’s a major improvement for Democrats from the past month. Biden trailed Trump by six percentage points in our last poll.

Getting to the Olympics, the greatest sporting event in the world, often takes years of training and major sacrifices: of academics, social life, maybe postponement of career goals. Then there is Matthew Dawson, an Australian field hockey player, who chose to amputate the top joint of his right ring finger rather than miss the Paris Olympics. Dawson, 30, who also was on Australia’s Olympic team in Rio and in Tokyo, where the team won silver, seriously injured the fingertip two weeks ago. During a practice match in Perth, Australia, on the morning of July 11, another player’s hockey stick accidentally hit the finger, leaving it bleeding and partly detached, Dawson said. “The first thought: OK, that’s it,” he said in a phone interview from the Olympic Village in Paris.
