Here's why, if you haven't updated your beneficiaries since you opened your accounts, it's worth checking in ASAP. When it comes to investing accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs, financial pros will generally tell you, the less you look at them, the better. In the event of your death, your brokerage or plan administrator distributes your assets to whomever you have designated as your beneficiary. This process generally only takes a couple of minutes, and you likely breezed through it when you opened your accounts. In the case of Fidelity, for instance, "beneficiaries must contact Fidelity themselves to receive their assets," company policy reads.

New York CNN —With interest rate cuts on the backburner, Wall Street is looking to corporate earnings to continue powering the 2024 stock market rally. Strong corporate earnings have helped the S&P 500 gain a whopping 16% and notch repeated record high closes this year. Health care and social assistance added 82,400 jobs, while government increased by 70,000 positions. The breakdown of the June jobs report suggests that growth has become increasingly uneven as the labor market shows signs of softening. Health care and social assistance have been a key component of the labor market recovery since the pandemic. Meanwhile, education accounted for 17,200 of the jobs added in the government sector. Both state and local governments added jobs outside of education, as well.

It’s unclear how far along the talks between IAC and National Amusements are. A bid to take control of Paramount would be a coda of sorts for Mr. Diller, 82, who tried to acquire Paramount Pictures in the early ’90s. Mr. Diller was named head of Paramount Pictures in 1974 at the age of 32. After Mr. Redstone outbid him for the company, Mr. Diller set his sights on continuing to build his new media empire, striking a series of audacious deals to expand IAC. “They won,” Mr. Diller said in a statement after losing out to Mr. Redstone.

But the court’s opinion also makes clear that this ruling is not a death knell for Smith’s case. Smith charged Trump with engaging in a “criminal scheme” to subvert the 2020 election; Trump has pleaded not guilty to four counts. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Supreme Court held that a president enjoyed civil immunity for all “official acts.” Now, in Trump v. United States, the court grappled with which “official” acts should also receive criminal immunity. In order to settle the extent of Trump’s immunity, Chutkan should expeditiously schedule the mini-trial to hear witness testimony and receive other relevant evidence from both parties. In response to Trump’s assertion of civil immunity there, the DC Circuit put in place a lengthy discovery schedule for the lower court to determine the extent of Trump’s civil immunity.

Read previewThe Supreme Court on Monday handed former President Donald Trump a partial victory by kicking the future of his January 6 criminal case down to a lower court. But on a 6-3 vote, a majority of the high court decided that former presidents do hold some immunity. Before Monday's ruling, former presidents already held sweeping immunity from civil prosecution thanks to a Nixon-era case. In taking its time to craft this ruling, justices have essentially handed Trump another victory for his delay tactics. If he were to win the election, he would likely scuttle the January 6 case and Smith's other criminal case in Florida related to Trump's hoarding of classified documents.

US indexes ended the day lower, despite market excitement over the latest PCE data. The stock market closed 2024's first half strongly, with the S&P 500 up nearly 15%. A police officer in a Seattle suburb was found guilty on Thursday in the 2019 shooting death of a man outside a convenience store, the first such conviction under a Washington State law making it easier to hold the police accountable for the unjustified use of deadly force. A jury found the officer, Jeffrey Nelson, guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree assault for the killing of Jesse Sarey, 26, during an arrest on a disorderly-conduct charge outside Sunshine Grocery in Auburn, Wash., on May 31, 2019. Mr. Sarey’s mother, Kari Sarey Hart, and his younger brother, Torell Sarey, died as the case wound its way through the legal system, said Elaine Simons, 64, who was a foster mother to the brothers. Mr. Sarey’s mother and family fled Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. “Neither of them got to be here today, except spiritually, for this kind of justice,” she said of Mr. Sarey’s mother and brother.

“I really gravitated towards the sugary ultraprocessed foods — it was like a physical drive, I had to have it,” he said. While many people addicted to food will say that their symptoms began to worsen significantly in adolescence, some recall a childhood focused on ultraprocessed food. The Institute of Food Technologists, an association of food professionals and technologists, does not agree with the research on ultraprocessed food addiction. “Children who eat a lot of ultraprocessed foods could well be malnourished.”According to the International Food and Beverage Alliance, however, there is no clear, objective, reliable or scientifically validated definition for “ultraprocessed” food. “Each time I would pray, ‘Please be it, please make this the answer.’ But I would ultimately start binging on ultraprocessed foods,” Odwazny said.

He didn’t have any documents. He was wrapped in bandages and 2,500 miles from his village in the Himalayas. But as he lay in a Russian military hospital, wounded in battle and surrounded by people speaking an alien language, Krishna Bahadur Shahi, an out-of-work engineer from Nepal who had committed the mistake of joining Moscow’s army, made a vow. “I had to get out,” he said in a recent interview. But the Russian military continues to rely on it, boosting combat power with impoverished young foreigners even though many, like Mr. Shahi, said they didn’t know they would be going into battle.

When the White House chief of staff, Jeffrey Zients, met with dozens of top executives in Washington this month, he encountered a familiar list of corporate complaints about President Biden. The executives at the Business Roundtable, a group representing some of the country’s biggest corporations, objected to Mr. Biden’s proposals to raise taxes. While the meeting was not antagonistic, it was indicative of three and a half years of executive grousing about Mr. Biden. Business leaders have criticized his remarks on “corporate greed” and his appearance on a union picket line. A number of prominent figures in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street — including the venture capitalists David Sacks and Marc Andreessen, and the hedge fund magnate Kenneth Griffin — have grown increasingly vocal in their criticism of Mr. Biden, their praise of former President Donald J. Trump, or both.

Opinion | Should Social Media Come With Warning Labels?

To the Editor:Re “Social Media Platforms Need a Health Warning,” by Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. surgeon general (Opinion guest essay, June 18):Dr. Murthy makes a compelling case for social media warning labels and offers parents sound suggestions for protecting their kids from toxic content. An entire generation of children is growing up watching their parents, older siblings and other family members glued to their phones, posting pictures, sharing memes, debating politics and doomscrolling day and night as life passes them by. Consistently modeling the behavior they’d like to see in their kids would circumvent even the most powerful algorithms and make parents the ultimate social media influencers.
