Hong Kong CNN —Australia’s new central bank chief, Michele Bullock, took the helm Monday after a firestorm of criticism over rising living costs engulfed the tenure of her predecessor. Tens of thousands of people, young and old, filled the streets of Midtown Manhattan under blazing sunshine on Sunday to demand that world leaders quickly pivot away from fossil fuels dangerously heating the Earth. Their ire was sharply directed at President Biden, who is expected to arrive in New York Sunday night for several fund-raisers this week and to speak before the United Nations General Assembly session that begins Tuesday. “Biden, you should be scared of us,” Emma Buretta, 17, a New York City high school student and an organizer with the Fridays for Future movement, shouted at a rally ahead of the march. “If you want our vote, if you don’t want the blood of our generations to be on your hands, end fossil fuels.”The Biden administration has shepherded through the United States’ most ambitious climate law and is working to transition the country to wind, solar and other renewable energy. But it has also continued to approve permits for new oil and gas drilling.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —An Australian teacher who killed his wife so he could start a new life with a teenage student has been sentenced to an extra year in prison for a crime committed when the girl was 16 years old. Their relationship continued despite intense speculation about the whereabouts of Dawson’s wife Lynette, who Dawson had claimed walked out on their family when their children were just two and four years old. Nathan PattersonNo trace of Lynette Dawson has ever been found despite multiple police investigations and searches, which included digging up the backyard of the couple’s former home on Sydney’s northern beaches in 2018. Dawson has continued to maintain his innocence, even after being found guilty in 2022 of murdering Lynette sometime around 1982. During the judge-only trial, multiple witnesses claimed to have seen Lynette Dawson in the years after, but Judge Ian Harrison dismissed those as false or mistaken.

It’s true that the Ukrainian counteroffensive debuted with conspicuous setbacks and hasn’t advanced as much as hoped. Moreover, land seized by Russia earlier has been used to strike ever deeper into Ukraine, making restoring defensible borders an existential concern. But Kyiv got the ammunition needed to sustain the counteroffensive longer while awaiting expanded factory production of conventional shells in 2024. It has been rendered in chrome-plated resin as part of a sculpture of Andy Warhol by the artist Rob Pruitt. It is a shopping bag — the Big Brown Bag, from the department store Bloomingdale’s — which turns 50 this month. To celebrate, Bloomingdale’s has introduced the Big Brown Bazaar at its flagship store on 59th Street in Manhattan, which is filled with new merchandise inspired by the shopping bag, including a Big Brown pickleball paddle ($98), a Big Brown journal ($19.95) and a Polo Ralph Lauren sweatshirt ($188) that features a bear holding a Big Brown Bag. A commemorative version of the bag, with a golden “50” and rope handles, will also be offered to store customers through October. Introduced in 1973, the Big Brown Bag debuted amid a rebranding at Bloomingdale’s that began a year earlier under Marvin Traub, then the department store’s chief executive, as it celebrated a century in business.

That should be no surprise considering that a consistent proponent of this inquiry was former President Donald Trump. I make that judgment based on my work as a scholar of impeachment and also as a practitioner who helped lead the first Trump impeachment and trial as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee. BOSTON (AP) — A wealthy Russian businessman with ties to the Kremlin was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison for his role in a nearly $100 million stock market cheating scheme that relied on secret earnings information stolen through the hacking of U.S. computer networks. Prosecutors had sought 14 years in prison, saying a stiff punishment was crucial to send a message to overseas cybercriminals. They then broke into the vendors’ computer systems to get filings before they became public, prosecutors said. Klyushin owned a Moscow-based information technology company that purported to provide services to detect vulnerabilities in computer systems. I don’t have a proper night stand and I don’t usually read before bedtime. However, my metaphorical night stand includes “Moby-Dick,” “Don Quixote,” three of Virginia Woolf’s lesser-known novels (“The Voyage Out,” “Night and Day” and “The Years”) and the complete work of Beatrix Potter. (Books written to be consumed at one sitting or in a day don’t interest me.) Rather, they read word by word, sentence by sentence, and they ponder over an unfamiliar word choice, a fleeting gesture, the shadow of an image, and the ripple of a sentence seen in the following sentence. It’s a testament to the art of reading with not only five senses but also with memory and imagination.

TERRACE STORY, by Hilary LeichterPriced out of their first home in an unnamed city, a young couple and their infant daughter, Rose, move into a smaller apartment. Structured as a collection of four linked stories, the book moves from Annie and Edward to another young couple, George and Lydia, who happens to be Rose’s daughter and is pregnant with her own. In the third section — the longest and most revelatory — Annie’s co-worker Stephanie is the focus of a grief-stricken origin story that deepens the novel’s supernatural fancies. The fourth section, set on an interstellar “suburb” as humanity migrates into outer space, brings Rose into contact with an “older woman” who is somehow Rose’s granddaughter. By contrast, Leichter announces her metaphysical conceit with a simple dinner party.
