Earlier Tuesday, GM said it furloughed 163 UAW workers at GM’s Toledo Propulsion Systems plant that makes transmissions for both the automaker's Missouri and Lansing Delta Township assembly plants that are on strike. On Monday, GM and Ford said they laid off another 500 workers at four Midwestern plants because of the impact of the strike.

"The UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants," Farley said, and claimed a "bad deal" could threaten financial viability of some U.S. vehicle production. On Monday, Ford said it had paused work on its $3.5 billion Marshall, Michigan battery plant that will use technology licensed from Chinese battery company CATL (300750.SZ), citing concerns about its ability to operate competitively. In 2022, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) barring $7,500 in future consumer EV tax credits if any battery components are manufactured or assembled by a "foreign entity of concern." Ford is awaiting guidance to determine if batteries produced by the Marshall plant would meet the requirements. Republican lawmakers have been probing Ford's battery plant plan for months over concerns it could send U.S. tax subsidies to China and leave Ford dependent on Chinese technology.

Sept 29 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday expanded its coordinated U.S. strike, this time targeting a plant at General Motors (GM.N) and Ford Motor (F.N) but refraining from an additional walkout from Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. Talks between Ford and UAW negotiators stalled during the week after the two appeared to be close to an agreement, sources familiar with the development said. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike to additional facilities of automakers Ford and GM, the UAW head said on Friday, adding that additional Stellantis members will not be called to go on strike. “We knew it was unlikely this was going to be quick,” Fain said on a livestreamed update. But, he said, “We’re excited about this momentum at Stellantis and hope it continues.”UAW President Shawn Fain said that Ford and GM have not made enough progress in meeting union demands, despite a strike that has gone on for 15 days. A week ago it added a series of 38 parts and distribution centers operated in 20 states by GM and Stellantis but did not expand the strike at Ford, saying that automaker had made significant progress in negotiations. As of noon Friday, there will be more than 25,000 UAW workers on strike, as Fain has called on an additional 7,000 members across Ford and GM to go on strike.

United Airlines pilots approved a new contract with compensation increases of as much as 40.2% over the four-year contract, making the carrier the last of the three largest U.S. airlines to seal a deal with its aviators during an industry shortage. The deal is worth about $10 billion, according to the Air Line Pilots Association, the pilots' union. ALPA said on Friday that the new contract won 82% approval from the more than 97% of United pilots that voted on it. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines pilots approved new contracts earlier this year, also with big raises. Other unions are also pushing for improved pay and benefits, calling for strikes or potential strikes when negotiations fall short of demands.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union will expand strikes against General Motors and Ford Motor to two U.S. assembly plants at noon ET, UAW President Shawn Fain said Friday. Fain said Chrysler-parent Stellantis was spared from additional strikes because of recent progress in negotiations with that company. "To restore the balance of power, we have to restore the strike," Fain said Friday, citing several other UAW strikes aside from the Detroit automakers. The UAW originally initiated work stoppages on Sept. 15 at three assembly plants — one each for the Detroit automakers. At that time, the UAW spared Ford from expanded strikes, citing progress in those negotiations.

DETROIT, Sept 29 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain is expected to launch walkouts at more Detroit Three auto factories Friday, barring last-minute progress in bargaining that has moved slowly since last week. Talks among the UAW and negotiators for the Detroit Three were described as "very active" by one person briefed on the situation. The union has shut one assembly plant at each of the Detroit Three, and 38 parts distribution centers at GM and Stellantis. However, strikes at these plants would have less impact as the models affected are either money-losers or substantially less profitable than the big pickups. The union launched its first walkouts on Sept. 15, with simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant at each automaker.

Members of the United Auto Workers union picket outside the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, on Sept. 26, 2023. DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union is holding up negotiations with Ford Motor over future electric vehicle battery plants, Ford CEO Jim Farley claimed during a press briefing Friday. "I believe we could have reached a compromise on pay and benefits but so far the UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants," he said after the UAW announced it would expand strikes to two additional assembly plants — one each for Ford and General Motors. Farley's public criticism of the union is uncharacteristic for Ford, which is historically viewed as the most union-friendly company of the Detroit automakers. Farley said the company isn't "at an impasse" with the union but warned that day "could come if this continues."
