(AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Monday proposed banning the cancer-causing chemical trichloroethylene, which can be found in consumer products including automobile brake cleaners, furniture care and arts and crafts spray coating. “Today, EPA is taking a major step to protect people from exposure to this cancer-causing chemical.”Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey, who has led the effort to ban TCE, welcomed the move. Political Cartoons View All 1215 Images“With this rule, we can see a future where we will no longer be manufacturing, processing and distributing a chemical known to be deadly,” Markey said. The chemical presents an “unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment” in 52 of 54 uses in industrial and consumer products, the EPA has found. The 2016 law required the EPA to evaluate chemicals and put in place protections against unreasonable risks.

The EPA said it also ordered Norfolk Southern to conduct additional investigations into oily sheen, or film, on water and sediments in two creeks in East Palestine. "Through this order, Norfolk Southern will take a thorough look at the waterways to ensure there are no lasting impacts from the derailment," EPA Regional Administrator Debra Shore said. Norfolk Southern said the order "formalizes the continuation of work that has been ongoing since the derailment under a different regulatory scheme. Norfolk Southern remains cooperative, working with EPA and Ohio EPA at the site, and will continue to address derailment-related impacts in the waterways of Sulphur and Leslie Runs." In February, EPA issued a Superfund unilateral administrative order, compelling Norfolk Southern to eliminate spilled materials and contaminated soil from the location of train derailment.

But the recent shift toward e-cigarettes that can’t be refilled has created a new environmental dilemma. U.S. teens and adults are buying roughly 12 million disposable vapes per month. But the quantities used in vaping devices are too small to warrant salvage. Disposable e-cigarettes currently account for about 53% of the multi-billion U.S. vaping market, according to U.S. government figures, more than doubling since 2020. The company has incinerated more than 1.6 million pounds of vaping waste in recent years, mostly unsold inventory or discontinued products.

WASHINGTON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The U.S Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday issued a final determination declaring that emissions from aircraft that use leaded fuel pose a danger to public health, following years of study. Aircraft that do use leaded fuel are typically small piston-engine planes that carry two-10 passengers and are around 45 to 47 years old. The EPA's review of lead emissions from aircraft dates to 2006, when it received a petition asking for regulation of lead emissions from privately owned airplanes. While levels of airborne lead in the United States have declined 99% since 1980, piston-engine aircraft are the largest remaining source of lead emissions into the air. Reuters first reported in January 2022 that the EPA was again reviewing whether emissions from piston-engine aircraft operating on leaded fuel contribute pose a danger to public health.

The clock is ticking for residents fleeing south through the battered streets of Gaza after the Israeli military told civilians to leave northern areas of the densely populated strip. Richard Brennan, a World Health Organization official in Cairo, told CNN that 60 percent of those killed in Gaza the last week were women and children. MSF’s Benoit told CNN Saturday there is a serious water shortage in Gaza with many people beginning to suffer from severe dehydration. The agency said it was the first official meeting between Iranian officials and Haniyeh since surprise Hamas attack on Israel that Hamas called Al-Aqsa storm. For days, Lebanon-based Palestinian militants have launched rockets into Israel, leading to Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, including Hezbollah positions.

Refrigerants used in fridges, freezers and cars change from a fluid to a gas to transport heat away from the place you want cooled. In refrigerators, the refrigerant starts as a liquid and expands into a gas, which forces it to cool down. The refrigerant then flows through condenser coils where it releases its heat out and cools back into a liquid. The cycle starts over when the refrigerant enters the expansion device, where the fluid spreads out, cools, and once again turns into a gas. Methane, the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide is 28, or 28 times worse.

☆ DOJ sues eBay for selling ‘rolling coal’ devices; fines could hit $2 billion

Ebay could be on the hook for as much as $2 billion in fines for allegedly allowing hundreds of thousands of "rolling coal" pollution devices and other products that violate environmental laws to be sold on its platform. The Department of Justice, on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, filed a lawsuit claiming that the e-commerce giant enabled the sale of more than 343,000 rolling coal devices. The DOJ's 61-page complaint included screenshots of emissions tampering devices that were listed on eBay's platform. Rolling coal devices are among several tools that can be used to disable or tamper with a vehicle's pre-installed emissions control systems, which the EPA requires of all vehicles. Under the Clean Air Act, tampering with a vehicle's emissions control systems and selling those tampering tools are illegal.
