An aerial view shows residential buildings and a stadium shrouded in smog in New Delhi, India, October 27, 2023. Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 415 on a scale of 500 in the capital's Anand Vihar area on Thursday, indicating "severe" levels of pollution that can affect healthy people and those with existing ailments. The dip in air quality in the region during the winter months is often accompanied by a spike in respiratory illnesses, spurring school and factory closings. The worsening air quality has cast a shadow over the cricket World Cup as fans flock to stadiums across Indian cities. Players have expressed concern about the toxic air, with England's Joe Root complaining of breathing difficulties during a game and India's Rohit Sharma urging change for "future generations".

By Tanvi MehtaNEW DELHI (Reuters) - People in New Delhi woke up to a thick layer of toxic haze on Friday, and some schools were ordered to be shut for two days as the air quality index (AQI) entered the "severe" category in several parts of the Indian capital. "Unfavourable meteorological conditions, sudden increase in the farm fire incidents and north-westerly winds moving the pollutants to Delhi are the major causes for sudden spike in AQI," the region's Commission for Air Quality Management said on Thursday. Authorities ordered primary, or elementary, schools to remain shut on Friday and Saturday, while most construction work in the region has been suspended. This year, attention on the worsening air quality has cast a shadow over the cricket World Cup hosted by India, with financial capital Mumbai also suffering from a spike in the pollution levels. Delhi hosts a World Cup match next on Monday between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan's Fakhar has no regrets over missed hundred

Fakhar led Pakistan's chase with a freewheeling 81, which earned him player-of-the-match award, but fell short of a hundred trying to wrap up their chase early. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands can also join them in a mid-table logjam should both win their next games. Fakhar said the mood was upbeat in the dressing room despite the uncertainty around the 1992 champions making the last four in the showpiece 50-overs tournament. "In the World Cup, each win gives you confidence and we were waiting for this win. "We are in the ifs-and-buts (zone) right now - but we will try to win both the remaining matches with good run rates.

Maxwell was riding on the buggy following playing a round of golf ahead of their contest against the defending champions in Ahmedabad on Saturday, when he fell off the back. Cricket Australia's concussion protocols mean that Maxwell's condition will be monitored for a few days. I think it rattled everyone to be fair once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game. Maxwell broke his leg in a freak accident at a birthday party in Melbourne last November and had also missed Australia's recent tour of South Africa with an ankle issue. Maxwell has been in superb form in the tournament and hit a 40-ball hundred against the Netherlands.

Their only win in the tournament came against Bangladesh and Sunday's defeat at the hands of table-toppers India was their fourth successive loss. "It has been frustrating from a players' point of view because we know we're better than that." "We've played six games now and we've not been anywhere near where we wanted to be so it is disappointing from that point of view," Malan said. "I'm pretty sure I'll be done for that but I'd love the guys to play in that," Malan said. "Hopefully we can find the momentum and finish the World Cup on a high."

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has stepped down as Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chief selector on Sunday after allegations of a conflict of interest. "I am stepping down from the post to offer the PCB the opportunity to conduct a transparent inquiry," Inzamam said in a statement released by the board. "If the committee finds me not guilty, I will resume my role as the chief selector." The PCB said it had set up a five-member fact-finding committee to look into the allegations. The allegations surfaced in the middle of Pakistan's struggling World Cup campaign, where they sit seventh in the points table after four successive defeats.

Pakistan coach rues lack of swing in India
  + stars: | 2023-10-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
KOLKATA, India, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Lack of swing in India has taken much sting out of the Pakistan pace attack in the 50-overs World Cup, head coach Grant Bradburn said ahead of Tuesday's clash against Bangladesh. "We have a great resource of fast bowling talent in Pakistan," Bradburn told reporters on Monday. "We do rely on swing, but we haven't experienced too much swing here. Pakistan's batting has not been consistent either and Bradburn said one of the top four batters must bat deep if they were to put up big totals in their remaining matches. Pakistan must win their remaining three group matches and hope other results go their way to make the last four, a situation Bradburn called far from ideal.

Rohit Sharma saved India's blushes with a captain's knock of 87 in what initially appeared a below-par total of 229-9 on a tricky surface at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Put into bat, the hosts slumped to 40-3 in the 12th over before Rohit forged a 91-run partnership with KL Rahul (39) to arrest their slide. Suryakumar Yadav contributed a breezy 49 down the order and India's tailenders scored some useful runs towards the end to take them past the 225-mark. England were reduced to 52-5 inside 16 overs in a remarkable batting capitulation and were eventually bundled out for 129 in inside 35 overs with Mohammed Shami claiming 4-22 for India. Needing 19 runs off Mitchell Starc's final over, New Zealand milked 13 runs off the first four legitimate deliveries to keep the heat on Australia. "That was awesome," Australia captain Pat Cummins said after their fourth win in six matches. Glenn Phillips broke the burgeoning stand by taking a return catch to dismiss Warner, but Head raced to a 59-ball century. New Zealand were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field, dropping five catches, with Head the beneficiary on two occasions. That left Ferguson with the job of hitting the final delivery for six, but he drilled it straight to the cover fielder instead.

LUCKNOW, India, Oct 28 (Reuters) - England's World Cup title defence may be in tatters after four defeats in five matches but assistant coach Marcus Trescothick said on Saturday their sagging fortunes won't stop them from relishing their blockbuster clash with hosts India. England won the title on home soil in 2019 and came into the showpiece as favourites after also capturing the Twenty20 World Cup last year, but defeats by New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka have left them on the brink of elimination. "Playing against India in a World Cup in their own country is a special part of the game. You get these opportunities that come around - you know there'll be a big crowd, there'll be a wonderful occasion," Trescothick told reporters. Trescothick said England had not lost faith in the 50-overs format having lifted the title at the last World Cup.

By Asif ShahzadISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A Pakistani court declined bail on Friday to detained former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a case in which he has been indicted on charges of leaking state secrets, his lawyer said. The charge is related to a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan's ambassador in the United States last year, which Khan is accused of making public. Former cricket star Khan denies that and said the contents of the cable appeared in the media from other sources. Lawyer Naeem Panjutha said the Islamabad High Court declined Khan's application for bail and for the case to be dismissed. Both the United States and the Pakistani military denied that.

"We're a really good team, done a lot of good things in the recent past in white-ball cricket and 50-over cricket," Buttler told reporters. "I think you're always questioning as captain how you can get the best out of players, how you can get the team moving in the right direction," Buttler said. England face the daunting task of playing unbeaten hosts India on Sunday and Buttler said they were determined to get back to playing good cricket. "I think it goes without saying you obviously do need wickets in hand but we haven't spoken about a blueprint as a (batting) unit," Markram told reporters. "No definitive roles given, but everyone kind of knows what they need to do to help this batting unit peak at their best. South Africa have batted first in four of their five matches and won them all. On the one occasion they had to chase, it went horribly wrong in a shock 38-run loss to the Netherlands. However, Disney may now sell a controlling stake in the business to Reliance, the Mukesh Ambani-controlled conglomerate whose streaming platform's success has weighed on the U.S. company's Indian business, Bloomberg reported. Reliance, whose broadcast venture Viacom18 runs JioCinema, values Disney's India assets, which comprises the Disney+ Hotstar streaming service and Star India, at between $7 billion and $8 billion, the report said. The enterprise value of the India business, Disney's biggest last year globally by users, was seen at around $15 billion to 16 billion when Disney took over Fox's business. The deal could be announced as early as next month, although no final decision has been made and Disney could still decide to hold onto the assets, Bloomberg reported. It was Afghanistan's first ODI victory against Pakistan in eight attempts and the outcome leaves defending champions England at the bottom of the points table. "This win tastes nice," a beaming Shahidi said after their second victory in five matches. Teenage spinner Noor Ahmad (3-49) dismissed Abdullah Shafique (58) and Mohammad Rizwan (eight) in his successive overs in his memorable World Cup debut. Shaheen Afridi returned to break the burgeoning stand, dismissing Gurbaz, but Zadran and Rahmat Shah, who made 77 not out, continued the good work.
