Those on trial say that plan was simply part of the pluralistic, oppositional politics that has long been permitted in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong government has repeatedly denied the national security law is suppressing freedoms. They hail from multiple generations and a wide political spectrum - from moderate democrats to those who advocate for Hong Kong’s self-determination. Known as “Grandma Wong,” the 67-year-old had been a fixture of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests. No national security cases in the city have been heard in front of a jury.

Former Mexico City Mayor and ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, gestures during her registration as oficial candidate for MORENA for the 2024 presidential election, in Mexico City, Mexico November 19, 2023. A prior survey by the firm published early last month had given former Mexico City Mayor Sheinbaum 55% support, and Galvez, a businesswoman-turned-politician, 20%. The latest Parametria poll gave a third contender, Samuel Garcia of the opposition center-left Citizens' Movement (MC), 10% backing. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The race to become Mexico's next president has closed slightly, but former Mexico City mayor and ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum still has double the support of her main opposition rival, an opinion poll showed on Monday. Samuel Garcia, who is competing for the candidacy of another center-left party, Citizens Movement (MC), polled 8% support. A poll published in early October had given Sheinbaum 50% support versus 20% for Galvez, although that survey included a fourth, right-wing candidate who did not feature this time. "With the entry of Samuel Garcia as sole MC contender, the presidential ballot has been practically set in stone," Buendia & Marquez head Jorge Buendia wrote in El Universal. Separately, an analysis of several polls by research firm Consulta Mitofsky which stripped out undecided voters and those not backing any candidate showed Sheinbaum with 62.7% of effective support.

Germany's major banks need to increase their provisions for non-performing loans, as corporate insolvencies and credit risks mount, according to Bundesbank Vice-President Claudia Buch. Lawmakers in Berlin are meanwhile scrambling for solutions to a developing budget crisis that could threaten the future of the country's coalition government. Like the rest of the euro zone, the German economy is dealing with a rapid rise in interest rates, as the European Central Bank took its main deposit facility from a record low of -0.5% in September 2019 to a record-high of 4% in September 2023. "I will say that, actually, the financial sector dealt quite well with this increase in interest rates. "Resilience is really of utmost importance at the current juncture.

REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Deutsche Bundesbank FollowFRANKFURT, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Germany's financial firms may be well capitalised now but face challenges ranging from rising interest expenditure and weak loan demand to unrealised losses, Bundesbank Vice President Claudia Buch said on Wednesday. "Almost two-thirds of savings banks and credit cooperatives now have unrealised losses throughout their banking book, which comprises loans as well as securities," Buch said in a statement. Buch warned that interest rate expenditure was likely to rise in the future, which will compress margins and weigh on earnings. Banks will struggle to offset higher costs via rising loan volumes since corporate demand is weak amid a recessionary environment. "Even in adverse scenarios, financial institutions should have sufficient levels of capital and liquidity to be able to absorb shocks on their own," Buch added.

ROME (AP) — Rome prosecutors asked a judge Thursday to effectively close an investigation into Italian and U.N. health officials over Italy’s 2020 Covid-19 response without charges, on the grounds that no crimes were committed, a lawyer said. Already prosecutors had closed their case without filing charges against three of Italy’s past health ministers. Guerra had been the former head of the department of prevention in the Italian health ministry until 2017 and was a WHO envoy to Italy during the pandemic. De Vita said prosecutors determined the pandemic plan was in the process of being updated. He welcomed the decision to archive the case, saying it should have been closed two years ago as soon as Guerra provided documentation to prosecutors showing he had acted correctly.

CNN —Colombian superstar Shakira settled her tax evasion suit with the Spanish authorities on Monday, avoiding a trial that was due to start that day. At the beginning of court proceedings in Barcelona, the judge announced a last-minute agreement submitted by all parties to avoid trial. Shakira was asked by the judge if she was aware of the deal and the latest fines agreed to which the singer responded yes. Spanish prosecutors had alleged the Grammy-winning singer failed to pay personal income and wealth tax between 2012 and 2014, currently valued at about $15.6 million. The Colombian pop star disputed that, calling the accusations “false” in an interview with Elle magazine in September 2022.

Right now, it's up 7.7% year-over-year and continues to rise, prompting Kantrowitz to say it's a "huge red flag for me." The upheaval at Documenta is just one example of how Europe’s art world is being torn by debates about Israel and Gaza, as some institutions have moved to postpone the shows of artists who have criticized Israel. Documenta was initially staged in 1955 as the first large-scale exhibition in West Germany of the art of the European avant-garde. It was a direct response to the Degenerate Art Show, the denunciatory exhibition of modern art staged by the Nazis in Munich in 1937. Although the mural was taken down, it set off a monthslong debate in Germany’s art world about antisemitism, Palestinian activism and Germany’s relationship to formerly colonized countries. Hoskote said Documenta was one of the art world’s greatest events, partly because it had always been a forum for new ideas.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - San Francisco police began arresting protesters calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war on Thursday after demonstrations blocked the Bay Bridge, a key commuter route into the city which is hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Authorities also deployed tow trucks to remove protesters' vehicles blocking the bridge. Local emergency services warned of the blockage during morning rush hour on the bridge which links Oakland and other East Bay cities to San Francisco. Traffic traveling on the bridge toward San Francisco began to move as of about 10:45 a.m. local time (1845 GMT) after a backup. “It is a good idea because they are against a war but I think they should be more safe and protest in the city, not the bridge,” Felix said.

CNN —Robert Pattinson’s Batman has not yet used the Batboat in his adventures, but the British actor said that he previously made use of another multifunctional boat – an inflatable one that he used for sleeping, sitting and eating on. “There was a time when the only piece of furniture I had for about six months was an inflatable boat that would double as my couch, bed, and dining table,” he told Architectural Digest in an interview published Wednesday. Featuring two rounded arms that jut out like giant earlobes, the sofa is covered in a white linen velvet with a base of pink onyx that matches drink trays in the arms. The promise and risks of deep-sea mining A vast treasure of critical minerals lies on the ocean floor. All of these factors make deep-sea mining more appealing, supporters say. Environmentalists, however, say it’s a false dichotomy, as land mining will continue whether or not deep-sea mining is allowed. Any country can allow deep-sea mining in its territorial waters, and Norway, Japan and the Cook Islands are close to allowing it. For now, the ISA's members are hotly debating the best standards for deep-sea mining.
