As speaker, McCarthy would be well placed to frustrate Democratic President Joe Biden's legislative ambitions. In Republican House leadership elections on Tuesday, McCarthy is expected to overcome a challenge from hard-line conservative Representative Andy Biggs. Republicans fell short of the "red wave" that some had predicted for a comfortable House majority and control of the Senate. The last two Republican House speakers, John Boehner and Paul Ryan, came under varying degrees of pressure from the right flank of the Republican caucus. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a group tied to him, contributed more than $160 million to help Republican House candidates.

A California judge has ruled in favor of a bakery owner who refused to make wedding cakes for a same-sex couple because it violated her Christian beliefs. Kern County Superior Court Judge Eric Bradshaw ruled Friday that Miller acted lawfully while upholding her beliefs about what the Bible teaches regarding marriage. “I’m hoping that in our community we can grow together,” Miller told the Bakersfield Californian after the ruling. The decision comes as a Colorado baker is challenging a ruling he violated that state’s anti-discrimination law by refusing to make a cake celebrating a gender transition. That baker, Jack Phillips, separately won a partial U.S. Supreme Court victory after refusing on religious grounds to make a gay couple’s wedding cake a decade ago.

Balenciaga and Vogue publicly cut ties last week, and on Monday talent agency CAA dropped West as a client, and production company MRC said that it’s shelving a documentary on West. Celebrities including Kat Dennings, Josh Gad and Meg Stalter condemned Adidas for sticking by West. We are waiting @adidas,” read Shannon Watts’ tweet in response to the incident that received more than 100,000 likes. Earlier this month after West wore a “White Lives Matter” shirt in public, Adidas said that it was reviewing its lucrative partnership with his Yeezy brand. With pressure mounting and West’s hate campaign against Jewish people continuing, it seems the question is when, not if, Adidas will cut ties.
House Democrats have unified as they fight to retain their fragile majority in next month’s midterms. But given Biden’s unpopularity and the GOP lead on the generic congressional ballot (which asks only which party people would support), the more likely scenario is a bad election night for House Democrats. If Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn head for the exits, the leadership matchups become pretty clear. Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., conducts a news conference in the Capitol Visitor Center on Sept. 20. The Massachusetts Democrat has significant support from fellow female members and has stayed close to the Black, Hispanic and Asian caucuses — big voting blocs in the diverse 220-member Democratic Caucus.
In the city of Santa Cruz, for example, affordable housing is so scarce some University of California students sleep in cars or classrooms. The most notable aims to alleviate California's housing crisis by permitting home construction on non-residential lots previously zoned for retail, offices, and parking. Owens hopes it will also ease the woes of UCSC students who can't find affordable housing on campus. According to the university, UCSC currently has just under 10,000 total spots available in campus housing for undergraduate, graduate and family housing. "A lot of the people who are bidding in Santa Cruz, don't have the income to match what landlords are asking," Owens said.

Laboe helped desegregate Southern CaliforniaLaboe, born Arthur Egnoian, started DJing in 1943 as a teenager, he said in an interview with the Orange County Register. Most recently, he hosted “The Art Laboe Connection” on station KDAY. In September, the 79th anniversary of Laboe’s radio debut, the nonprofit station dublab flipped the script on Laboe and sent dedications to him. Over an hour and a half, fans called in to give Laboe songs (and kisses): One requested “18 With a Bullet” because Laboe played it for her when she turned 18.
European startups like Sequence and Numeral want to establish themselves as the region's leaders. In March, the valuation of Californian startup Modern Treasury spiked to $2 billion as it established itself as an early leader in the burgeoning FinOps sector. In Europe, FinOps startups have captured the attention of a wealth of venture capital firms hoping to be an early backer in the region's own Modern Treasury. The US payments market is notoriously fragmented with some 5,000 banks and no universal real-time settlements platform. Indeed, investment into European startups plummeted by 38% in the second quarter of the year to $23.7 billion, according to Crunchbase data.

They moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, and could finally save enough to buy their first house. Three days before my daughter was born, we moved to Glendale, a suburb of LA, and paid $1,600 monthly for a one-bedroom apartment. Because we didn't have savings, we decided to rent in Royal Oak, a young and trendy town 15 minutes outside Detroit. In Royal Oak, we could pay our rent and student loans and get groceries with about $4,000 to put aside into our savings. That summer, we bought an additional vehicle; we'd sold my car in LA to save money.
California has passed legislation to create a Fast Food Council that could pave the way for a $22 minimum wage. The council would create minimum standards for areas like health and safety, wages, and conditions. "Fast food workers are the largest and fastest growing group of low-wage workers in the state and lack sector-specific protections," it continues. Californian counties and cities with more than 200,000 residents would also be able to establish a Local Fast Food Council. The council's purposes would be to "establish sectorwide minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions," including training and health and safety standards.
In the case of Elon Musk v. Charismatic Megafauna, the agency intends to publish its final report in late April. Musk went on: "Either explicitly or implicitly some people seem to think that humans are a blight on the Earth's surface. Musk is talking about existential risk, the idea that something — an asteroid, a rogue artificial intelligence — might kill every human on Earth. And if you assume that future human minds will "mainly be implemented in computational hardware instead of biological neuronal wetware," as Bostrom does, you end up with a mind-boggling 1054 human lives. Musk has made the defense of "future life" his mission.

Girls behind bars tell their stories
  + stars: | 2015-03-26 | by ( Ashley Fantz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
“I say, ‘What’s gone on in your life?’ “The result of that tenderness and patience is Ross’ latest collection of photos, “Girls in Justice.”The images are unflinching. But the girls also tell their stories alongside the images. Photographer Richard Ross Richard RossOne photo shows a girl in a tan jumpsuit, hand on her head, sitting alone in a drab, cavernous room. Many of the stories are bleak, reflecting adults who endangered the girls or, at the very least, failed repeatedly to protect them. Ross seems to be saying the shame isn’t the girls’ – it’s ours as a society for jailing children.
