The European tour wanted it. And, after some reflection, Luke Donald wanted it, too. Emboldened by seemingly unanimous backing, Donald accepted an offer to stay on as Europe's Ryder Cup captain for its defense of the 17-inch golden trophy in 2025 at Bethpage Black in New York. That's the last time an away team has won the Ryder Cup. You would think he was going to be a Ryder Cup captain at some point and if it’s this time, great.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Opinion | Knowing When ‘They’ Means One
  + stars: | 2023-11-28 | by ( John Mcwhorter | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I have a proposal about our new usage of “they” to refer to individual people, as in, “Irene? Oh, they left an hour ago” or “Bernard cut themselves by accident.”Because it is so hard to change language by fiat, I know that my proposal here must qualify as modest. But propose it I must: Might it make the new “they” a little easier to handle if it were used with singular tense marking? Context usually makes the meaning known, but surely it would make things a little clearer if we could use “they wants to trim the cat’s claws” when referring to just one person. Poor little “they” has had it rough over the years.

BEIJING, Nov 27 (Reuters) - More than three million people took China's annual civil service exam on the weekend, state media reported on Monday, a record number that underscores young people's concerns about getting a secure job in a rocky economy. With stubbornly high youth employment in the world's second-largest economy, the prospect of a less glamorous career in the civil service is increasingly attractive as private sector job opportunities dwindle. "After all, the general environment is not good," one user of the Weibo social media platform said of economic prospects as posts about the civil service exam surged. The exam was held simultaneously in 237 cities across the country on Sunday, the state-run China Daily reported. The Global Times reported that the number of civil service jobs had increased for the past five years.

China's central bank pledges to support domestic demand

REUTERS/Thomas Peter/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Nov 27 (Reuters) - China's central bank on Monday said it would fend off systemic risks to the economy and use forceful and targeted monetary policy to better support domestic demand. "Prudent monetary policy should be precise and forceful, with greater emphasis on cross-cyclical and countercyclical adjustments, enriching the monetary policy toolbox," the bank said. The bank added it would "further unblock the monetary policy transmission mechanism", enhance the stability of financial support for the real economy and keep prices "reasonably stable". China's economy is gaining momentum, but it faces challenges such as an imbalanced global economic recovery and an unstable foundation for domestic economic recovery, the central bank said. "Supply and demand dynamics in the property market have greatly changed," the central bank said.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Europe should not be afraid of working with China because of competition, foreign minister Wang Yi said at a press briefing on Friday with his French counterpart in Beijing. "China's position is clear, we will adhere to our support of Europe's strategic autonomy," Wang said when asked about China's view of its relationship with Europe. China, facing trade issues with the European Union, has also been called out for its non-transparent laws on foreign businesses operating in the country. "We will listen to the voices of European businesses, earnestly solve problems of foreign investors in China," Wang said. Wang said China maintains normal friendly relations with all countries including Iran and Russia, as well as France.

The Chinese military will maintain high vigilance, resolutely defend sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and resolutely safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea, China's military said. "The Philippines enlisted forces out of the region to patrol ... stirred up trouble and engaged in hype, undermining regional peace and stability," the southern theatre command of the Chinese military said. Relations have soured between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea under Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr as he pivots towards closer ties with the U.S., which supports the Southeast Asian nation in its maritime disputes with China. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday China had warned the U.S. and the Philippines in connection with their patrols. A Chinese navy ship shadowed three U.S. and Philippine warships conducting joint patrols on Thursday, the Philippine armed forces chief, Romeo Brawner, told reporters.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's foreign ministry said it is in the interest of all parties to ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea claimed it successfully placed its first spy satellite in orbit, vowing to launch more in the near future. After two failed attempts, North Korea's latest launch drew the ire of South Korea and Japan. "Maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula and promoting the process of political settlement of the peninsula issue are in the common interests of all countries in the region," she said. South Korea, Japan and the United States had coordinated to position Aegis destroyers to track the launch and shared that data, South Korea's military said. One of the risks associated with sex work is money laundering and human trafficking, where victims, mostly women, are forced or coerced to engage in commercial sex acts. Many banks and other financial platforms avoid doing business with these industries altogether. “That is the problem we have — trying to recognize potential human trafficking that we would have to report.”Beyond banks, many financial services apps have blanket bans, which state they won’t process any transactions related to adult content or services. China's coast guard said two small Philippine transport ships and three coast guard ships entered the waters without the permission of the Chinese government and urged the Philippines to stop infringing on Beijing's sovereignty. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during his visit to Manila on Saturday that his country, the Philippines and the United States were cooperating to protect the freedom of the South China Sea. China's use of water cannons followed a series of incidents in the South China Sea, including the collisions between China's vessels and two Manila ships on Oct. 22. The Philippines accused China coastguard of "intentionally" colliding with its vessels.

Three of the criminal counts that he had faced were for crimes that had occurred in the Washington, D.C., area, according to the indictment. In total, Mr. Raymond abused 28 women over the 14-year period, prosecutors said. “Many of the recordings show Raymond touching and manipulating the victim’s bodies while they were unconscious and incapable of consent,” the Justice Department said in a news release on Tuesday. “Raymond attempted to delete the explicit photographs and videos depicting the victims after learning about the criminal investigation.”Mr. Raymond’s lawyer, Howard Bernard Katzoff, could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday evening.
