CNN —Violent crime dropped by more than 15% in the United States during the first three months of 2024, according to statistics released Monday by the FBI. The new numbers show violent crime from January to March dropped 15.2% compared to the same period in 2023, while murders fell 26.4% and reported rapes decreased by 25.7%. In a statement Monday, Attorney General Merrick Garland stressed the new data “makes clear that last year’s historic decline in violent crime is continuing.”“This continued historic decline in homicides does not represent abstract statistics. US murder rate plungesThe new FBI figures validate a trend identified by some national crime experts: The US murder rate continues to drop at a high rate and could be headed for its largest annual decline ever. ‘Interrupting cycles of violence’The US murder rate has declined since 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic brought with it a surge in homicides across the country.

But some experts say invasive fruit flies can do more damage than the colorful Joro spider, AP News reported. AdvertisementGiant spiders migrating to the Northeast USScientists say Joro spiders are adapted to colder climates like in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Alex Sanz/AP PhotoThough the massive creatures are venomous, they aren't dangerous to humans beyond potentially causing a swollen, red bite, Sieb told BI. Beyond their size, there's another characteristic of Joro spiders that makes them a little creepy: They can fly. Customers would get a call from the bank, or their A.T.M. cards would stop working and then their credit cards would freeze as well. One question that lingered was what the long-term ramifications would be for those whose accounts were closed. Thankfully, people who had experienced this usually weren’t blacklisted from opening accounts at other banks, even if their former bank told them that it would never take them back. But what if you tried to work at a bank that had kicked you out?

Opinion: I just don’t get watching organized sports
  + stars: | 2024-06-06 | by ( David G. Allan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
It’s usually these professional sport high holidays where I’m cornered into admitting I’m sports agnostic. The winning and losing of watching professional sports is a faux drama, a soap opera with injuries. The difference is, of course, that the wins and losses of politics don’t benignly reset at the start of the next season. It’s the watching, and caring about, professional sports as an adult that eludes my understanding. Forgetting who he was talking to, he began his explanation by comparing his home team to another professional underdog team.

forward — rose in a Delaware courtroom to declare that the Justice Department’s sweeping immunity deal with Hunter Biden was not nearly as sweeping as the defense believed. His transfer coincided with efforts by congressional Republicans to portray Mr. Weiss — a Trump appointee held over by President Biden’s aides — as offering “a sweetheart deal” to the Bidens. In early 2023, he published a memoir covering the police trial, describing himself as “the prosecutor who took down Baltimore’s most crooked cops.”Mr. But he was passed over because it was believed he might clash with prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, they said. Ms. Monaco eventually chose another prosecutor from Maryland, Thomas P. Windom, to run the team.

Over the past six years, Baltimore has endured one of America’s deadliest drug epidemics. Fatal overdoses have fallen surprisingly hard on one group: Black men currently in their mid-50s to early 70s. While just 7 percent of the city’s population, they account for nearly 30 percent of drug fatalities — a death rate 20 times that of the rest of the country. An examination by The New York Times and The Baltimore Banner — drawing on previously undisclosed autopsy records, more than 100 interviews and a novel data analysis — revealed the impact on these men, who make up part of a little-recognized lost generation.

Larnell Robinson sat at a desk in his cluttered office last September, between a bookshelf full of Bibles and a table stacked with the overdose antidote Narcan. Richard, 61, discovered in an apartment with multiple drugs in his system two and a half weeks later. And then 59-year-old Glenn, who had lived on Mr. Robinson’s floor for years. Sometimes, it’s illegal to spend money that you set aside for yourself. When you save money in many types of workplace retirement accounts, the Internal Revenue Service doesn’t collect income taxes on that money until it’s time to take it out, when you’re older. But you must have a very good reason, and you definitely can’t lie about it. Last week, a sentencing hearing took place after a rare case involving this sort of legal violation. Ms. Mosby will spend up to 12 months in home confinement, absent a successful appeal or a presidential pardon, which she has requested.

Since May 2022, homeownership costs have grown twice as fast as incomes, putting the dream of owning property out of reach for many Americans. During that time, median mortgage payments rose from $2,319 to $2,835, per data provided by Redfin. To get a better sense of how rising prices have affected different markets, Redfin compared mortgage payments for 50 of the largest U.S. cities in May 2022 with May 2024. The city has a rich cultural history and is near Boston and New York, making it a popular market for second homes. Monthly payments increased in places like Ohio and Wisconsin, but are still well below the 2024 national median of $2,835.

Last summer, a book changed Kohn Glay’s life. He ordered a copy, and soon was back on TikTok, fervently recommending it to his followers. “If you’re on your spiritual journey, you absolutely need to go and get you one of these,” he says in the video, urging viewers to buy the book in the TikTok store. Glay, who is 43 and lives in Baltimore, began holding online classes to guide people through the journal. Over the next few months, people who watched his videos bought more than 40,000 copies of the book on TikTok, and Glay earned more than $150,000 in commissions.

“That show was so Black,” my 8-year-old whispered after we saw “The Wiz” on Broadway. He hadn’t made this observation last fall after seeing a performance of the show in Baltimore, during the national tour that preceded this revival. So I was curious: What had changed, and why was this iteration more culturally resonant for him than even the 1978 movie starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson or NBC’s 2015 “The Wiz Live!” special that I’d screened for him. I suspected my son was drawn to this version’s colloquial expressions (“All I got to do is stay Black and die,” Evillene tells Dorothy), choreography (ranging from Atlanta street dancing to South African amapiano) and its casting of Wayne Brady as the Wiz, who greets the Scarecrow and the Tinman with a dap. (Brady will depart the production on June 12.)

This is the first part in a series exploring Baltimore’s overdose crisis. People in Baltimore have been dying of overdoses at a rate never before seen in a major American city. In the past six years, nearly 6,000 lives have been lost. The city set ambitious goals, distributed Narcan widely, experimented with ways to steer people into treatment and ratcheted up campaigns to alert the public. Many of those efforts to fight overdoses stalled, an examination by The New York Times and The Baltimore Banner has found.

Nearly eight weeks after the container ship Dali rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, efforts were underway on Monday to move it back to a berth in the Port of Baltimore. The operation appeared to be off to a slow start, with five tugboats surrounding the giant ship but no official word that the move was underway an hour after its anticipated 5:30 a.m. start. The bridge collapsed on impact, killing six workers doing repairs on the bridge roadway, clogging the waterway with around 50,000 tons of metal and debris, and disrupting the commerce of one of the nation’s key shipping hubs. The salvage and recovery operation has involved more than a thousand workers and scores of barges, cranes, helicopters and Coast Guard cutters. Authorities set a goal of reopening that channel by the end of May.
