“You call it Girl Math, we call it the Labor Day sale,” a recent promotion from clothing brand Lane Bryant read. From this tangle of overly serious criticism and brand interference, the idea of “girl math” stretched far past its original intent. After all, if “girl math” exists, what is “boy math”? “I think the great equivalent to girl math for boy math is the fact that all of us dudes think we could land a plane,” a man in one popular TikTok posited. Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is one of the big names to wade into the "girl math" trend.

After Averted Shutdown, McCarthy’s Gavel on the Line

McCarthy has the support of most of his members for remaining speaker, but his conference has been riddled with infighting. If just a handful of those members joined with all Democrats, McCarthy would indeed be imperiled. It remains to be seen how many of those members – or others – might support a motion to oust McCarthy. So with a razor-thin GOP majority in the House, whether McCarthy keeps his gavel will almost certainly depend on Democrats. And adding to the troubles was McCarthy’s insistence on Sunday that Democrats were “willing to let government shutdown,” despite their support for the legislation that outnumbered Republicans’.

The Education Department is moving forward with its new plan for broad student-debt relief. Last week, the Education Department released new details on the process to cancel student debt using the Higher Education Act of 1965. However, it indicates how Biden is thinking about his new plan for relief by targeting borrowers who have struggled with repayment to no fault of their own. Additionally, there is no guarantee borrowers who qualified for Biden's first debt relief plan will qualify this time around. The progress toward new debt relief comes as millions of federal borrowers are entering repayment after an over three-year pause.

CNN —Rep. Matt Gaetz is planning to attempt to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the role this week after the House leader worked with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown on Saturday. “Speaker McCarthy made an agreement with House conservatives in January and since then he’s been in brazen, repeated material breach of that agreement,” Gaetz said Sunday. “Look, the one thing everybody has in common is that nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy. “I think Kevin McCarthy is a very weak speaker. “The only way Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House at the end of this coming week is if Democrats bail him out.

Real estate stocks extend losses as rates soar

The S&P 500 real estate index (.SPLRCR) lost 0.7% on Friday after falling 3.5% on Thursday, which was its biggest daily decline since March when the banking sector was in crisis. This provided tempting returns for fixed-income assets, making the relatively high dividend payouts of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) a little less tempting. While the Fed decided not to hike interest rates after its meeting on Wednesday, it indicated that rates could stay at elevated levels for longer than investors had expected. On Friday the biggest real estate loser was American Tower (AMT.N), which finished down 1.8% while the biggest gainer was Extra Space Storage (EXR.N), up 1.2%. Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE.N) fell 1.6% on Friday, after losing 8% on Thursday and hitting its lowest level since 2016.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After being thwarted by Congress, President Joe Biden will use his executive authority to create a New Deal-style American Climate Corps that will serve as a major green jobs training program. The climate corps had been proposed in early versions of the sweeping climate law approved last year but was jettisoned amid strong opposition from Republicans and concerns about cost. Democrats and environmental advocacy groups never gave up on the plan and pushed Biden in recent weeks to issue an executive order authorizing what the White House now calls the American Climate Corps. White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi said the administration will work with at least six federal agencies to create the climate corps and will pair with at least 10 states. California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan and Washington have already begun similar programs, while five more are launching their own climate corps, Zaidi said: Arizona, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina and Utah.

As we stumble toward another existential election, panic is setting in among some progressive groups because the donors who buoyed them throughout the Trump years are disengaging. He added, “Groups need money to make sure we have a good outcome next November. And it speaks to a mood of liberal apathy and disenchantment that Democrats can’t afford ahead of another grueling election. “To the degree that there isn’t enough organic enthusiasm, we have to generate it,” Wimsatt said.
