Supermarket giant Albertsons ‘ potential combination with Kroger makes a lot of sense. So much sense, in fact, that perhaps investors shouldn’t bank on it just yet. Albertsons’ stock price jumped more than 11% after reports emerged on Thursday that Kroger was in talks to combine with Albertsons. Kroger’s shareholders were less enthused and its shares dipped slightly.
Kroger could announce a deal to buy rival grocery company Albertsons this week, sources told CNBC's David Faber. The companies could announce the all-cash deal as soon as Friday morning, sources told Faber. Albertsons' market cap is about $14.9 billion. Its stores, which now include Amazon Fresh, still command a small percentage of the overall U.S. grocery market, but sparked a wave of investment. Kroger, for example, struck a deal with British online grocer Ocado to build huge robot-powered fulfillment centers to pick and pack online grocery orders.
Kroger and Albertsons are engaged in talks around a potential merger, Bloomberg reported. A merger would boost the joint chain to a store footprint of over 5,000 locations. Albertsons' latest annual SEC filing listed 2,276 stores as of February 26, 2022, under a total of 24 different banners. The merger alone would not make the combined chain the largest in the United States, however. The company's total retail units around the globe comes out to 10,593, as of January 31, 2022.

Israel-based robotics startup Get Fabric Ltd., which has placed so-called microfulfillment centers in New York City and Dallas, is focusing on selling its warehouse automation platform rather than building more specialized small distribution sites. Some companies leased vacant retail spaces for use as “dark stores” for fulfillment and delivery, while others opened smaller warehouses near population centers. The shift makes the niche logistics business the latest to see a business strategy that gained traction during the Covid-19 pandemic lose its momentum as consumers have resumed prepandemic buying habits. That has some retailers rethinking their heavy investments in online fulfillment. Takeoff Technologies Inc., a microfulfillment system provider, expanded its business in the past year, said co-founder and Chief Executive Max Pedró.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is moving one step closer to having a robot make its tortilla chips. The burrito chain said Tuesday that it will test "Chippy," an autonomous kitchen assistant made by Miso Robotics, next month in a restaurant in Fountain Valley, California. Chipotle has already tested Chippy's ability to make and season its tortilla chips with salt and lime at its headquarters' innovation hub in Irvine, California. Today, workers at Chipotle restaurants fry and season the chips, which can be time consuming. Restaurants and retailers have been testing robotics and automation to speed up operations and reduce menial tasks for workers.

And much of that waste could be repurposed or recycled, if only it were better identified and sorted. That's where a startup called Smarter Sorting comes in. Using the Smarter Sorting data to determine exactly what is in the product, and especially if any ingredients are toxic, retailers and manufacturers can make more informed decisions on how best to handle its inevitable disposal. "Albertsons, one of our customers today, just released a sustainability goal report with four main pillars in it, and one of the main pillars for them is the reduction of food waste," said Claudia. Smarter Sorting's backers include Regeneration VC and G2 Venture Partners, with total funding to date of just over $55 million.
