Destruction in northern Gaza after Israeli airstrikes is pictured on October 28. Catch up below on the latest developments in the war:Israel's goals in this stage: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Saturday the war in Gaza is "going to be long." The Al Shifa hospital was lit up in Gaza City on Tuesday. But to the Israeli military, it is a threat, and, perhaps, a target. Among Al Shifa’s current patients are about 130 newborns who were orphaned just as they were born, according to doctors at Al Shifa. Born premature, they were placed in incubators in Al Shifa’s neonatal intensive care unit. However, it does not appear as though any major ground offensive aimed at seizing and holding significant amounts of the territory is yet underway. Hamas’ initial surprise attacks on Israel earlier in the month killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. In its Saturday statement, the UN added that a ceasefire could facilitate the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Saudi Arabia “condemns and denounces any ground incursions” by Israeli forces into Gaza due to the impact on civilians, the country’s Foreign Ministry wrote in a Saturday statement. Citing the UN resolution calling for a humanitarian truce, Abbas said Israel responded “with more bombing and destruction.”This story is developing and is being updated.

Israel has said Gaza's militant Hamas rulers have a command post under the hospital, without providing much evidence. The Israeli military had no immediate comment when asked about reports of strikes near Shifa. Casualties on both sides are expected to rise sharply as Israeli forces and Palestinian militants battle in dense residential areas. Despite the Israeli offensive, Palestinian militants have continued firing rockets into Israel, with the constant sirens in southern Israel a reminder of the threat. Israel says its strikes target Hamas fighters and infrastructure and that the militants operate among civilians, putting them in danger.

A Palestinian fighter of the Al-Quds brigade in a military tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip last year. Overnight on Saturday, Israeli fighter planes struck 150 underground targets in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said. The group’s leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, said in 2021 that there were 310 miles of tunnels in Gaza. Ben Milch, an Israeli American who cleared tunnels with the Israeli military during the 2014 Gaza War, said his unit came under fire repeatedly while working to destroy some 13 tunnels. After the Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had destroyed the tunnel to the sea, it released a video of another incident.

Palestinians responded by building hundreds of tunnels to smuggle in food, goods, people and weapons. The tunnels cost Hamas about $3 million each, according to the Israeli military. To people in Gaza, Al Shifa is the biggest and most advanced hospital around — a lifeline, in normal times, and now a place of refuge from relentless Israeli airstrikes. But to the Israeli military, it is a threat, and, perhaps, a target. On Friday, hours before the Israeli military stepped up its bombardment of Gaza in retaliation for Hamas’s mass killings of Israelis three weeks ago, it held a news conference in which it said that Al Shifa conceals underground command centers for Hamas — raising fears that the military was laying the groundwork for attacking the hospital. Hamas “does its command and control in different departments of the hospital,” said Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief spokesman for the Israeli military, speaking in English and citing intelligence sources that he did not release. He displayed an illustrated map of the hospital marking what he said were several underground Hamas installations in the complex.

The Israeli army said Friday night that it was expanding its ground operations in the Gaza Strip amid intensifying airstrikes in its most significant maneuver yet ahead of an invasion intended to end 16 years of Hamas rule, while the strip came under a nearly complete communications blackout. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief Israel Defense Forces spokesman, again urged Palestinians to leave the northern Gaza Strip, including Gaza City, to head south, amid growing signs that the military was poised to launch an expansive ground operation.

Israel’s military is intensifying its ground operations in Gaza in another step that likely moves the country closer to its widely expected, larger ground invasion of the Hama-ruled territory. An Israeli military spokesman on Friday said ground forces were “expanding” their activities in Gaza, distinguishing the uptick from a series of ground raids that Israeli forces have conducted. It’s been more than two weeks since Israel’s military directed the evacuation of northern Gaza within 24 hours. "Simultaneously, we are preparing for a ground invasion. The White House on Thursday declined to comment on what Israel’s military is doing on the ground in Gaza.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops and tanks briefly raided northern Gaza overnight, the military said Thursday, engaging with Hamas fighters and targeting anti-tank weapons in order to “prepare the battlefield” before an expected ground invasion. Israel has imposed a suffocating siege on Gaza since Hamas’ bloody rampage and hostage-taking across southern Israel ignited the war. The Israeli military says it only strikes militant targets and accuses Hamas of operating among civilians in an attempt to protect its fighters. That is more than three times the number of Palestinians killed in the six-week-long Gaza war in 2014. On Wednesday, the wife, son, daughter and grandson of Wael Dahdouh, a veteran Al-Jazeera correspondent in Gaza, were killed in an Israeli strike.

Image Palestinians wounded in Ahli Arab Hospital blast were later treated at another hospital in Gaza on Tuesday. Israel said the strike on the hospital parking lot was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket, citing intelligence intercepts and videos of the sky above Gaza at the time. Al Jazeera, a Qatari news channel, concluded that a Palestinian rocket had been intercepted by an Israeli air defense missile. Scores of public institutions in northern Gaza, including hospitals like the Ahli Arab hospital, were warned by Israel to evacuate. And the risk of triggering a broader war with Hamas' allies in Lebanon and Syria might also give them pause. With his prime-time vow to send more weapons to both Ukraine and Israel, President Biden sought to make clear on Thursday that the United States was not prioritizing one war over the other. But hours earlier, a Defense Department official said that tens of thousands of 155-millimeter artillery shells promised to Ukraine would be diverted to Israel. Here are three key weapons systems that Israel and Ukraine may need from the United States. Artillery ammunitionPerhaps more than any other weapons, the NATO-standard 155-millimeter shells will be in high demand, as both Israel and Ukraine use them against targets within a few dozen miles. In January, the Pentagon said it would tap into an American stockpile in Israel and ship hundreds of thousands of 155-millimeter shells to Ukraine.
