Elon Musk has over the last year threatened legal action against tech competitors, employees and people who use Twitter, which he owns. Now he is also taking aim at an organization that studies hate speech and misinformation on social media. The letter cited research published by the Center for Countering Digital Hate in June examining hate speech on Twitter, which Mr. Musk has renamed X.com. The research consisted of eight papers, including one that found that Twitter had taken no action against 99 percent of the 100 Twitter Blue accounts the center reported for “tweeting hate.” The letter called the research “false, misleading or both” and said the organization had used improper methodology. The letter added that the center was funded by Twitter’s competitors or foreign governments “in support of an ulterior agenda.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk marked San Francisco as the spot for X Corp. over the weekend, erecting a giant lighted X sign on top of the company's headquarters Friday. The saga over the glowing sign is the latest example of Musk's impulsive approach to running the company formerly known as Twitter. City officials Friday issued a notice of violation to X Corp. for installing the sign without approval. According to public records on the department's website, representatives for X Corp. repeatedly declined to "provide access" to inspectors who visited the building. This is not the first time X has clashed with San Francisco building inspectors.

Elon Musk's latest legal adversary: a nonprofit that studies hate speech and misinformation on social media. On July 20, X Corp., formerly known as Twitter, sent a letter to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, or CCDH, threatening to sue the British research nonprofit. The letter follows CCDH research published in June, which studied the propagation of hate speech on the social media platform since Musk's buyout. Other CCDH research found that the social media company failed to act on 89% of anti-Jewish hate speech and 97% of anti-Muslim hate speech on the platform. The letter from X Corp. to CCDH is one of a handful of legal threats or actions by the company in recent months.

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has a new motto, and it sounds like it belongs to an '80s cover band. It's the latest change in Elon Musk's rebrand of Twitter into an "everything app." X — the app formerly known as Twitter — has a new slogan, and it sounds a little too much like a Bon Jovi song. the app's page in the Apple App Store now reads, a change from the former tagline of "Let's talk." Declarative and reminiscent of an '80s rock band, the phrase is Elon Musk's latest change as he rebrands Twitter to X.

The owner of the handle, Gene X Hwang, said he'd been willing to trade it. In its rebranding efforts, X — formerly known as Twitter — abruptly took over one of its user accounts with the handle @x on Tuesday night. He'd owned the @x handle since 2007 and has since generated over 53,000 followers on the social media site. X emailed Gene X Hwang that they had taken his handle during their rebranding process. What's more, taking over the @x handle appears to be the least of the social media's rebranding woes.

The settlement Fox News may pay to Smartmatic could be around $1 billion, experts say. Disney's $177 million settlement for the infamous "pink slime" lawsuit in 2017 dropped to second place. Experts told Insider that the $787.5 million settlement is a strong benchmark for Smartmatic — and that Smartmatic will likely get more. Either way you slice it, using those baseline numbers brings you above the $787.5 million figure Fox paid to settle Dominion's lawsuit.
