Former US President Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump arrives, more than 3 hours late, to a campaign rally in Traverse City, Michigan on October 25, 2024. A senior official in the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris said Friday they "fully expect" Donald Trump to declare victory before votes are fully counted on Election Day evening. It failed," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in a press call, according to NBC News. The official said Republican nominee Trump "lies all the time" and is already seeking "to sow doubt about a loss that he anticipates is coming" on Tuesday against Harris, the Democratic nominee and current vice president. The call came on the heels of baseless claims by Trump that there is large-scale "cheating" going on in voting in Pennsylvania, a key swing state in the election.

CNN —In the closely watched battleground state of Michigan, election officials are under the microscope, with isolated mistakes or missteps serving as fodder for election deniers to lay the groundwork for widespread doubt of election results. Some of the confusion appears to have originated from a post on X by Matthew DePerno, one of the more high-profile election deniers in Michigan. DePerno has pleaded not guilty in the voting machines case. When it does happen, we take it extremely seriously,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said in a statement. Despite the recent challenges, election officials in Michigan say they are confident that they are prepared to withstand efforts to undermine confidence in the results.

Together, Pennsylvania’s mail ballot rules have generated an entire vocabulary for rejected mail ballots — ballots that are unsigned, undated or misdated, or even “naked,” if they are not clothed in a secrecy envelope. The latest update from Oct. 31 — after the general statewide deadline to request a mail ballot — shows there were 2,193,578 mail ballot applications ever approved. Combined with the deficient returned ballots that we already know about referenced above, that comes to about 8,000 deficient mail ballots that have been returned to date. Although this general election will likely see more mail ballots returned than the previous midterm, the trend so far suggests we might have fewer mail ballots rejected. Moreover, the experience in 2022 suggests there will also be thousands of provisional ballots cast by voters who return deficient mail ballots.

In an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance suggested that he and Donald Trump can win the “normal gay guy vote” and that families with transgender children are looking for an edge in Ivy League college admissions. An early portion of the interview focused heavily on transgender people and transition-related medical care, which Vance described as “pharmaceutical conversion therapy” for gay people. “I mean that’s what to me is so crazy about some of the hyper-left-wing reaction,” Vance responded. “Well, I think I’m probably going to pick you, but I don’t know, and I’m not ready to make a decision,” Vance recalled Trump saying. “We’re sitting there watching, like, some stupid show, ‘Emily in Paris’ on Netflix or something,” Vance said, before catching himself.

The early votes of new voters — voters who did not show up in 2020 — are of particular interest because they are votes that could change what happens in 2024 relative to the last presidential election. The data out of Pennsylvania shows large differences in the number of votes cast by new voters, both by party registration and by gender. More new voters are registered Democrats than Republicans, and new female voters are driving this partisan gap. The new male voters are only slightly more likely to be Democrats than Republicans, but among new female voters, Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1. But the Republican advantage in new Arizona voters so far is being driven largely by male voters.

Over the past seven decades, Puerto Rico has been governed by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, currently in office held by Gov. This year, however, the candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a minority party that advocates for the island’s independence from the U.S., has had a breakthrough. Independence Party candidate Juan Dalmau has gained enough momentum to have a fighting chance at defeating Jenniffer Gonzalez, the candidate from the incumbent pro-statehood party, and relegating the candidate from the Popular Democratic Party, Jesús Manuel Ortiz, to third place. As a result, Congress passed the PROMESA law in 2016 to create a federally appointed fiscal oversight board to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt. In addition to this, Puerto Rico was hit by devastating natural disasters that include 2017’s Hurricane María and a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the pandemic.

The pandemic-era 2020 election had the highest ever early vote totals, at more than 101 million, or 63% of all votes cast. But beside 2020, the share of early votes has remained steady since 2012, even as early vote totals have increased. In 2012 and 2016, early votes were about 36% of all votes. This comes as more states offer more options for people to cast their ballot: In 2000, fewer than half the states offered early voting, and as of 2024, only three states — Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire — don’t offer in-person early voting. It’s important to not misread early vote numbers or read too much into who has voted thus far.

Turning Point Action is one of several outside groups that have taken over the work of canvassing on behalf of Republicans. Some churches and pastors promoted Turning Point events during worship services and in social media posts, NBC News found. Training churches to serve as unofficial Trump campaign surrogates fits into a broader campaign by Turning Point to mobilize evangelicals. “Joe Biden should be ashamed of himself, if he knows what he’s even doing,” Trump said from the garbage truck. Former President Donald Trump held a press conference from inside a garbage truck at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport on Wednesday. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, attended the Harris rally after stumping on the trail with Baldwin. He sidestepped a question about Biden’s remarks on Tuesday and Trump’s garbage truck gag response, saying he wasn’t focused on the matter. But to Harris supporters, Trump’s outrage over Biden’s comments rang hollow.

Democrats have a big enthusiasm advantage over Republicans in the 2024 election, per Gallup. But polling in key swing states continues to show a tight race between Harris and Trump. AdvertisementWith just five days to go until Election Day, Democrats appear to have a significant advantage over Republicans when it comes to voter enthusiasm. Just before the 2012 election, Republicans boasted a 12-point enthusiasm advantage over Democrats, but Mitt Romney still lost to Obama. Harris campaign officials had always planned for star-studded events in the homestretch of the presidential election. Annie Mulligan/APBoth campaigns utilize the power of celebrityEver since Harris’ campaign kicked off with Charli XCX’s lime green stamp of approval, Hollywood’s influence has been in the spotlight. Both Harris and Trump swiftly pounced on the “Swiftie” fanbase, showcasing the pop superstar’s immense reach: The Harris campaign created Harris-Walz friendship bracelets inspired by the singer, while the Trump campaign released Eras Tour-inspired T-shirts. I do think that seeing a woman on the ballot will, hopefully, encourage more women to vote, even if they don't vote for Harris. At the time, I thought it was going to be a landslide, like 'We're about to have our first woman president.' I don't think everybody in the U.S. will ever be ready for a woman president, but I don't think everybody in the U.S. was ready for a Black president either. Even if Kamala wins, I don't think everybody in the U.S. is ready for a woman president, just like they weren't ready for a Black president. I think Harris is just bringing a lot of new people into the process who haven't necessarily felt included before.

China has told its automakers to halt big investment in European countries that support extra tariffs on Chinese-built electric vehicles, two people briefed about the matter said, a move likely to further divide Europe. The new European Union tariffs of up to 45.3% came into effect on Wednesday after a year-long investigation that divided the bloc and prompted retaliation from Beijing. Ten EU members including France, Poland and Italy supported tariffs in a vote this month, in which five members including Germany opposed them and 12 abstained. Chinese automakers including BYD , SAIC , and Geely were told at a meeting held by the Ministry of Commerce on Oct. 10 that they should pause their heavy asset investment plans such as factories in countries that backed the proposal, said the people. They declined to be named, as the meeting was not public.

Election officials in pivotal battleground states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona have all tried – and largely failed – to fact-check Musk in real time. Election officials say they are simply outmatched up against Musk’s followers and the X algorithm. “Election officials, they have a very hard job – their job is to be election officials not to be Tweeters,” said Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Election officials in Pennsylvania are similarly attempting to fact-check Musk’s false claims on X but acknowledge those efforts are unlikely to stymie the spread of election lies. In Georgia, election officials see little point in trying to engage with Musk directly, instead turning to the method they relied on in 2020 to beat back misinformation: Regular press conferences with election officials rebutting the latest election falsehoods.

Likely voters in Georgia divide 48% for Trump to 47% for Harris, and in North Carolina, Harris stands at 48% to Trump’s 47%. North Carolina, which narrowly supported Barack Obama in 2008, has voted Republican in the past three presidential elections. While the polls find similar political environments in Georgia and North Carolina overall, there are some significant differences. “I have a plan and strategy,” Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and political operative who has close ties to associates of Trump, told a group of Pennsylvania activists earlier this month. Four years ago, Trump’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden didn’t truly materialize until after the election. Brian Snyder/ReutersBut this time around, MAGA activists have been planning to undermine a potential Harris victory well in advance of the election, with some even arguing that state legislators should simply ignore the election results and award electoral votes to Trump by default. “Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” said Harris. Trump himself has echoed some of the conspiracy theories pushed by his supporters, suggesting that election fraud is rampant in 2024.

Boeing strike will dent last jobs report before election

Boeing workers gather on a picket line near the entrance to a Boeing facility during an ongoing strike on October 24, 2024 in Seattle, Washington. Boeing 's more than seven-week machinist strike is set to hit Friday's U.S. jobs report — the last one that will be released before Nov. 5 presidential election and the Federal Reserve's meeting next week. Some 44,000 U.S. workers were on strike when the Labor Department conducted its survey in mid-October. About 33,000 of them are Boeing machinists, who walked off the job on Sept. 13 after overwhelmingly voting against a union-endorsed labor contract and in favor of their first strike since 2008. Boeing's machinist strike has complicated the plane maker's already difficult position as its new CEO Kelly Ortberg tries to steer the giant U.S. manufacturer and exporter out of safety, quality and financial crises.
