Customers with shopping bags after visiting a Primark clothing store on Oxford Street in London, UK, on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023. U.K. retail sales rose by 2.5% in October, higher than the 1.6% growth of a year ago but below the three-month and twelve-month averages of 3.1% and 4.2%, respectively. The British Retail Consortium, which published the figures, said sales likely declined by volume because of the impact of inflation. Paul Martin, U.K. head of retail at KPMG, said sales "remained weak." As a result, the strong demand that has kept some retailers afloat over the last 18 months is now falling away."

Artist: Elizabeth WilliamsJust before 8 p.m. on Thursday, 12 jurors found Sam Bankman-Fried guilty of all seven counts against him. (CNBC put out a note requesting access ahead of the trial — an email which was ultimately ignored.) Every exit to file a report included another breakneck trip through security, in a sort of run, rinse, repeat cycle — security, courtroom, exit, photographer's car to file, back up through security, over and over again. CNBC correspondent MacKenzie Sigalos reporting on the Sam Bankman-Fried trial from outside the SDNY courthouse at 500 Pearl Street in downtown Manhattan. Around 8:02 p.m., Bankman-Fried, speechless, began to walk to a room just adjacent to the main court.

A jury of twelve found FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried guilty of all seven criminal charges brought against him. The question of how long he'll remain in prison, however, is one that Judge Lewis Kaplan will spend the next few months deliberating by himself. "So I should preface this by saying I'm not a lawyer," Bankman-Fried began one answer. After several dozen of these instances, the government often presented evidence that would either directly refute the defendant's testimony or offer an answer to the question Bankman-Fried had dodged. So now, the question of prison time goes to Judge Kaplan.

It has earned Amazon more than $1 billion from US households, newly unredacted portions of the suit allege. Public revelationsThe complaint’s newly unsealed portions, filed Thursday in Seattle federal court, uncover a wide range of previously non-public allegations. More than 70% of Amazon shoppers do not click past the first page of search results, according to the unsealed complaint. In another situation, Amazon allegedly took steps to promote its own, proprietary products — such as the Amazon Kindle tablet — as having been recommended by expert reviewers when the Amazon products had not earned such a recommendation. If the Amazon price went up, the competing retailers would increase their prices as well, according to the complaint.

Christina started taking Wegovy in September 2021 after getting a prescription through Calibrate, a startup that promises science-backed help with weight loss. She never received medication through Calibrate again, and she's since gained back all the weight she lost. Calibrate says its goal for Masters patients is to get them off weight-loss medications and help them maintain the weight loss they achieved. A former employee on Calibrate's clinical team said the startup allocated fewer doctors to second-year patients because those patients historically required less help from Calibrate. At least four second-year patients Insider spoke with said they sought refunds from Calibrate after they didn't receive the services they paid for.

Twelve Democrats voted with 214 Republicans for the bill, and two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in objecting. Republicans have a 221-212 majority in the House, but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate 51-49. To become law, the bill would have to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by Biden. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday said the IRS cuts and Israel aid in the House bill would add nearly $30 billion to the U.S. budget deficit, currently estimated at $1.7 trillion. After the vote, Johnson urged the Senate and White House to quickly approve the bill.

It’s similar to an insurance product in that it can protect buyers against losses arising from debt default by a company or government. Country Garden, formerly China’s largest homebuilder, missed the payment on a $500 million bond as it battles a liquidity crisis. “Country Garden was once considered a safe name, even as peers like Evergrande and Sunac China went bankrupt around them. Here’s a (non-exhaustive) account of how Musk has fundamentally changed Twitter since he made one of the most consequential acquisitions of the social media age. Many of Musk’s content and product decisions have also led to what civil society groups have reported as a troubling spread of hateful speech on the platform. He recommended that X users monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict by following an account known for spreading disinformation, before later deleting his post. And, in an attempt to prove that former Twitter executives deliberately discriminated against conservatives on the platform, Musk provided a handpicked group of journalists with selective access to company records. It is perhaps Musk’s all-consuming presence that has most undermined what users used to love about Twitter.

HOUSTON—Twelve years after one of the most devastating losses in baseball history, the heartbreak of the 2011 World Series still looms over the Texas Rangers. On two separate occasions in Game 6—in the ninth inning and then again in the 10th—the Rangers needed just one more strike to claim a championship over the St. Louis Cardinals. Both times, they blew the lead, punctuated by David Freese’s legendary walk-off home run that destroyed a generation of Rangers fans. “For a couple of years after that I would probably have a moment every day where I would think about it,” said Michael Young, the Rangers’ all-time hits leader and a key member of that 2011 squad. “If that ball goes off the end of his bat instead of smack dab on the barrel, this whole thing is different.”

The cost to Israel's economy of its war with Hamas militants will be unlike anything it has experienced in decades. "This is not a hit for contractors or industrialists alone," said Raul Sarugo, president of the Israel Builders' Association. Israel was blindsided on Oct. 7 by Hamas gunmen from Gaza who rampaged through border towns in the deadliest attack on civilians in its history.
