Mr. Vance’s stumbles have come after a remarkable two weeks when Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt and then rallied the party — and even some skeptics — behind him. Then, in a sense, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance became the victims of that success. Some of Mr. Vance’s comments on some conservative podcasts veered into serious policy critiques that trucked in antisemitic tropes and racial stereotypes. The Harris campaign has been able to keep the spotlight on the momentum behind her fledgling presidential run — and away from Mr. Trump. Still, the Harris campaign was happy with the bruises they had inflicted.

one memo from the Harris campaign read. The Harris campaign has already sent out fundraising emails with the subject line, "What happened to: 'Any time, any place?'" Campaign experts who spoke with BI said that the attacks so far appear to be working but also recognized that voters are still seeing the early formations of Harris' campaign. AdvertisementBloomberg reported that Harris' campaign has narrowed her list to three names, citing sources familiar with the matter, to Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. A Harris campaign spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider.

The choice of Senator JD Vance as former President Donald J. Trump’s running mate reflected the confidence of a campaign so sure of victory in November that it could look beyond a second Trump term to the legacy of his movement. But in less than two weeks, Mr. Vance has found himself on the defensive, and his struggles have dented the sense of invulnerability that only a week ago seemed to be the overriding image of the Trump campaign. A stream of years-old quotes, videos and audio comments unearthed by Democrats and the news media in recent days has threatened to undermine the Trump campaign’s outreach to women, voters of color and the very blue-collar voters to whom Mr. Vance, a first-term Ohio senator, was supposed to appeal. His past comments deriding “childless cat ladies,” supporting a “federal response” to stop abortion in Democratic states and promoting a higher tax burden for childless Americans have yielded a chorus of criticism from Democrats. Mr. Vance’s fresh efforts to explain them have provided Democrats more material, with the Harris campaign promoting one short clip in which he seems to suggest that when he spoke of childless cat ladies, he meant no insult to cats — “I’ve got nothing against cats,” he said.

Trump’s campaign would not say what sparked the former president’s 180-degree turn on bitcoin. Billionaire crypto tycoons Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss each pledged to donate $1 million worth of bitcoin to Trump’s campaign. The cryptocurrency industry has experienced a resurgence since the downfall of FTX. Trump supporters were not hard to find inside the Bitcoin Conference. New York CNN —ABC News is continuing preparations for an upcoming presidential debate, despite former President Donald Trump saying he won’t consider participating in a debate until the Democratic Party formally chooses its nominee. “Full steam ahead,” an ABC network source told CNN on Friday. I agreed to a debate with Joe Biden,” Trump, the Republican nominee, said on a press call earlier this week. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Trump suggested the ABC debate should be moved to the right-wing network Fox News. Earlier this week, Fox sent letters to both campaigns offering to host their own presidential debate.

Sen. JD Vance, the running mate of former President Donald Trump, on Friday defended his comments accusing key Democrats — including Vice President Kamala Harris — of being miserable "childless cat ladies" who want to "make the rest of the country miserable too," as well as anti-family and anti-kids. Vance has been under fire for days after the "cat ladies" remark resurfaced online following the Ohio Republican's nomination as the party's vice presidential candidate. I explicitly said in my remarks," Vance said. At the time Vance made his remarks Buttigieg was in the process of adopting twin babies with his partner. A month after his comment in 2021, Vance appeared on Tucker Carlson's now defunct-show on Fox News — Kelly's former employer — and expanded on it.

The Justice Department on Friday settled a lawsuit with two former F.B.I. officials who had accused the Trump administration of violating their privacy by sharing their texts disparaging former President Donald J. CNN —Former President Donald Trump is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, the first such meeting between the two men since Trump left the White House more than three years ago. Trump, who often claims he was the most pro-Israel president in modern history, once touted his close, personal relationship with Netanyahu. Netanyahu called Trump the greatest friend Israel has ever had and heralded him for “unequivocally” standing by Israel during Trump’s tenure as commander in chief. In posting that engagement with Abbas, Trump was trying to “strike a balance” going into the meeting, Bahbah said, adding that he hopes Trump will come out of the Netanyahu meeting calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. “At the table, the most important question is asking the prime minister what he needs to win.

Nearly two weeks after the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump, there’s still no official report from the Trump campaign or from state or federal governments about what caused the wound on his right ear. This lack of clarity has left the issue unsettled and fueled speculation online about whether he was hit by a bullet or shrapnel — or perhaps something else. But a detailed analysis of bullet trajectories, footage, photos and audio by The New York Times strongly suggests Mr. Trump was grazed by the first of eight bullets fired by the gunman, Thomas Crooks. Subsequent bullets wounded two rally goers and killed a third. What has helped stoke confusion is that Mr. Trump himself has said he was hit by a bullet, but his campaign has not released any official medical reports, nor has Mr. Trump’s current physician weighed in.

While Trump insists he's sticking with Vance, the senator's poor polling combined with Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum has led some to ask: Could Trump replace Vance? The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice presidential nominees. Related stories"I think sometimes what people forget is that people start voting in September," Dacey told Business Insider. It would be, he said, "extraordinarily disruptive" both logistically and politically to replace Vance as the vice presidential nominee. In 2020, there were rumors he would replace former Vice President Mike Pence on his ticket.

Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has raised more than $4 million from a mix of digital tokens, a campaign aide told CNBC. At least 19 donors contributed more than $2.15 million bitcoin to the committee, the filing shows. Brian Hughes, a Trump campaign aide, said that of the more than $4 million in crypto raised, most of it arrived in bitcoin. "While the Biden-Harris Administration stifles innovation with more regulation and higher taxes, President Trump is ready to encourage American leadership in this and other emerging technologies." Thus far, it appears the Trump campaign is mostly converting these contributions immediately to USDC and then liquidating the donations.

In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

CNN —After Vice President Kamala Harris accused former President Donald Trump of “backpedaling” on a debate, the Trump campaign said Thursday it would not commit to any future debates until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee. “I have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,” Harris told reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews Thursday. Trump told reporters earlier this week he wants to debate Harris but has not yet agreed to anything. Before Biden withdrew from the race, Harris had positioned herself to go up against Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, on the debate stage. “I was told I was going to get to debate Kamala Harris, and now President Trump’s going to get to debate her?” Vance joked.

Yesterday’s rally was former President Donald J. Trump’s first since President Biden, an 81-year old white man, dropped out and Vice President Kamala Harris, a 59-year-old Black woman, stepped up. Just how would Mr. Trump proceed? His campaign tried projecting confidence about the switch, even as Ms. Harris had come out swinging, raising $81 million in the first 24 hours and hijacking the media spotlight. Before Mr. Trump took the stage at the Bojangles Coliseum, his spokesman, Steven Cheung, dropped by the reporters’ pen to assure everyone that the Trump campaign was totally, definitely not freaking out about any of this. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Fox News has invited Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to debate each other in Pennsylvania on Sept. 17, according to copies of the letters obtained by CNBC. The invitation comes a day after Trump said he would be willing to debate Harris, the newly minted de facto Democratic nominee, multiple times on a call with reporters. The Harris and Trump campaigns did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on whether they would accept the invite. The debate would serve as a redemption opportunity for Democrats, following President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance in June.

Charlotte, North Carolina CNN —Donald Trump will step out onto the campaign trail Wednesday to an entirely new race and a political landscape once again irrevocably altered by an unprecedented election year. Meanwhile, Trump and his campaign are working to reimagine a playbook and operation launched to take on an unpopular 81-year-old incumbent. He predicted that Harris would start “gaining on or even leading President Trump” in the polls, though he also insisted that the “honeymoon” period would end. Trump’s appearance in Charlotte will provide his first opportunity to contrast himself with Harris before voters in a battleground state. But it was left off the list of states that the Biden campaign viewed as most winnable in a sobering post-debate assessment of the race.

Vice President Kamala Harris and more than 30 Capitol Hill lawmakers are not planning to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to a joint meeting of Congress on Wednesday afternoon. It is Netanyahu's fourth address to Congress, the last of which took place in March 2015. This year, nine months into the Israel-Hamas war and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Netanyahu's speech has become a lightning rod of controversy, triggering an eruption of protests in Washington. Harris' absence from Netanyahu's speech is a conspicuous departure from tradition, though it is not wholly unprecedented. Instead, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin, D-Md., will preside over Netanyahu's joint address.

A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment. The Trump campaign also filed a complaint on Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission accusing Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris of violating campaign finance laws by rolling Mr. Biden’s campaign funds over to Ms. Harris. Even before Biden dropped out of the race, Rep. Chip Roy, the Texas Republican, filed a resolution in June after the president’s disastrous debate performance, calling on the 25th Amendment to be used against Biden. After Biden withdrew from the race, Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Republican, wrote letters to Harris and the Cabinet officials in the Biden administration, asking them to remove Biden from office. To forcibly wrest power from a sitting president, the vice president would have to be on board, according to the text of the amendment. Why do we have the 25th Amendment? That was before the 25th Amendment, so there was no constitutional rule.

The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.

Donald Trump wants a weaker dollar in order to boost exports for US manufacturers. Other ways Trump could weaken the dollar would also risk raising US debt or inflation, Barclays said. AdvertisementDonald Trump's proposed policies run counter to one another, with his plan to increase trade tariffs complicating his intent to weaken the dollar, Ajay Rajadhyaksha of Barclays wrote in the Financial Times. Other options for weakening the dollar exist, but none come without consequences, the strategist noted. He cited alternative plans: raising US debt could help, at the cost of Treasury market volatility and more inflation pressure.

CNN —The Trump campaign on Tuesday filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission arguing money raised for President Joe Biden’s reelection bid cannot be transferred to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. But, he added, “that doesn’t mean it can’t get tied up in FEC proceedings for years.”An FEC spokesperson declined to comment, citing the agency’s policy on not discussing enforcement matters. “If President Biden is committed to passing the torch to his vice president, and wants to be able to seed her campaign with the current Biden for President campaign war chest, he’ll first have to become his party’s legal nominee,” Spies wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal before Biden’s exit from the race. And Federal Election Commissioner Dara Lindenbaum, a Democrat viewed as a swing vote on the evenly divided commission, has said Harris could access what Biden raised through the campaign committee because it is registered for both the president and vice president. Lindenbaum wrote on X, “If Kamala Harris becomes the Democratic Party nominee, she gets access to the Joe Biden campaign funds.”This story has been updated with additional reporting.
