President-elect Donald Trump's tariff plans could weigh on the broader stock market, but some attractively valued names with strong cash levels could withstand the pressure, according to UBS. "The rally overlooks the potentially negative knock-on implications of tax cuts and tariffs on corporate performance and valuations." Against that backdrop, UBS looked for stocks that have high levels of cash and are attractively valued. The stock has a dividend yield of 2.7%. It has a dividend yield of 2.2%.

The interest rate outlook will come back into focus next week with key inflation data and Federal Reserve meeting minutes coming out ahead of Thanksgiving, as investors wrap up a major month for markets following President-elect Donald Trump's election victory. The October personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index set to release Wednesday could dent already-dimming hopes for a December rate cut if it comes in hotter than expected. The inflation rate is expected to have increased 0.2% month over month and 2.3% year on year. Rosy expectations Even with the interest rate cut expectations coming in, investors are optimistic on the direction for stocks to close out the year and into 2025. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin this week said he expects the S & P 500 can end next year at 6,500.

Investors should brace themselves for another big move next year, according to an analysis of historical data from Bank of America. The S & P 500 is up 24.7% in 2024 and on track for its second straight year with a gain of more than 20%. After rising 31% and 38% in 1927 and 1928, respectively, the S & P 500 lost 12% in 1929 and another 28% in 1930, Hartnett said. The last time the S & P 500 posted back-to-back 20% annual gains was in the 1990s, soaring 34% in 1995 and 20% in 1996. Hartnett noted that the "secret sauce" for the S & P 500 to avoid some of the sharp reversals seen before is a decline in Treasury yields.

In today's big story, billionaire Ken Griffin has some advice for President-elect Donald Trump, including a suggestion for his Treasury pick . While speaking Thursday at the Economic Club of New York, Griffin said he appreciates the importance of those issues to Americans but said aggressive tactics to address them could make things work. Griffin is one of the biggest donors to the Republican Party, but declined to publicly endorse either presidential candidate this year. Susan Wiles, Trump's incoming chief of staff, maintained ties to a lobbying firm until this month. Sean Duffy, Trump's pick for Transportation secretary, has lobbied for a group of major airlines. The EPA, under Obama, Trump, and Biden's administrations, have repeatedly opposed efforts to mine in the bay, home to one of the world's largest salmon fisheries. Starting not long after he left Congress in 2019, Duffy lobbied for Polaris, a US auto manufacturer known its off-road and recreational vehicles. ProPublica previously reported that Duffy lobbied White House trade adviser Peter Navarro as Polaris sought to win exemptions to tariffs on the parts it was importing.

In the emerging AI software battle between Microsoft and Salesforce , investors do not need to pick a side. The announcements came roughly one year after the tech giant launched a suite of AI assistant tools called Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both companies leaning into AI agents is notable because Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has not been hesitant to attack Microsoft's competing AI offerings. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday said companies related to natural gas and oil will thrive under President-elect Donald Trump's administration and a majority Republican Congress. "If you want a sustainable Trump trade, I say bet on the natural gas ecosystem. Enbridge says it transports about 20% of all natural gas consumed in the U.S., and Cramer claimed the Canadian outfit has "strategically located assets." He also named Cheniere and Sempra , saying the former is the "best play" for liquified natural gas exports. "Seasonally, this is a good time for the commodity," he said, pointing out that natural gas itself has climbed since the election.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary pick stands in stark contrast to some of the more controversial and questionable Cabinet picks he’s announced so far. In many respects, the Treasury secretary is the quarterback of the economy. Wall Street was unfazed by the selection. One of the Treasury secretary’s jobs is to help keep Wall Street calm and confident during times of economic or market turmoil. The Treasury secretary works closely with both the central bank and the White House.

We are buying 50 shares of GE Healthcare at roughly $81.51. Following the trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 975 shares of GEHC, increasing its weighting to 2.2% from about 2.1%. GE Healthcare may be best known for selling medical equipment like MRI and CT machines, but its pharmaceutical diagnostics business is what's most exciting right now. One more thing we liked was GE Healthcare commitment to expand its adjusted EBIT margins. This year, GE Healthcare expects its adjusted EBIT margin to be between 15.8% and 16%.

Mike Shatzkin, a charismatic publishing consultant who counseled industry figures on nearly every facet of the trade, from inventory management to supply-chain quandaries to the seismic paper-to-digital transformation of book selling, died on Nov. 7 in Manhattan. His death, at a hospital, was caused by complications of a rare and untreatable form of lymphoma, said his wife, Martha Moran. As the founder of the Idea Logical Company, he mentored publishing executives, served as a go-to expert for reporters and was a popular speaker at conferences. His blog, The Shatzkin Files, was an essential read for industry insiders — if they could keep up with his output. (“I type 100 words a minute,” he once boasted.)

AdvertisementRoyal Caribbean launched Utopia of the Seas, the second-largest cruise ship in the world, in July. I spent three nights in the ship's Royal Promenade-facing interior cabin. It was better than having no window, but don't expect natural light or silent nights. These savings come with a trade-off — they're often windowless and dingy, with no natural light to be found. Royal Caribbean has found a way to give cruisers the best of both worlds, in theory at least.

The deal includes an agreement for Anthropic to use Amazon's AI chips more. The goal of all this money is mainly to get Amazon's AI chips to be used more often to train and run large language models. It's also going to help Amazon design future Trainium chips and contribute to building out an Amazon AI model development platform called AWS Neuron. The Information reported recently that Anthropic prefers to use Nvidia GPUs, rather than Amazon AI chips. In May, Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon told Business Insider he wasn't aware of any companies using Amazon chips at scale.

It's a "no-brainer" for "anyone in their 20s," says Eustache Clerveaux, a certified financial planner and senior analyst at Hudson Financial Group. This includes Roth 401(k)s. But for younger workers who don't have access to a workplace plan, a Roth IRA can be a great way to start building wealth. Like a 401(k), Roth IRA contributions benefit from compound interest, where your money and its returns grow together over time. Younger investors are less likely to hit Roth IRA income limitsOne key reason to start investing in your 20s is that you're more likely to qualify for a Roth IRA. This makes it an ideal time to pay taxes upfront on Roth IRA contributions.

New face, same goals? Heads in Washington are still spinning after Donald Trump named Pam Bondi as his choice for attorney general, just hours following Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and close ally of the president-elect, would most likely share his and Gaetz’s goal of shaking up the Justice Department. But the switcheroo also raises questions about how willing Republicans might be to push back against the more divisive elements of the Trump agenda. What to know: As Florida’s attorney general, Bondi participated in efforts to overturn the Affordable Care Act and the legalization of marijuana, as well as a multi-state lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin.

President-elect Donald Trump signaled Friday his intention to nominate hedge fund executive Scott Bessent as his Treasury secretary, in a move that puts a seasoned market pro and a close Trump loyalist in a critical economic position. As head of Treasury, Bessent, 62, will be both the U.S. fiscal watchdog as well as a key official to help Trump enact his ambitious economic agenda. Like Trump, Bessent favors gradual tariffs and deregulation to push American business and control inflation. The Treasury secretary is the lynchpin for the White House economic agenda. Others close to the president-elect think Bessent has not been rigorous enough in his support for tariffs, though Warsh also has made public statements against the levies.
