The GOP fires up its vengeance 2024 tour
  + stars: | 2024-06-06 | by ( Tom Foreman | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s felony conviction, the “R” in the Republican brand might just as well stand for revenge. Trump nodded to the idea when asked about his conviction, which he has persistently, and with no evidence, blamed on President Joe Biden’s administration. Much of it is aimed at Biden, but there is plenty of anger to go around. Is every House committee controlled by Republicans using its subpoena power in every way it needs to, right now? “It’s bigger than just President Trump.

The sophisticated scheme boosted revenue flowing into the coffers of The Epoch Times, the Justice Department said. In one year, revenue at the Trump-boosting outlet ballooned 410%, jumping from $15 million to about $62 million, the Justice Department added. But, when CNN asked for further comment on Tuesday, The Epoch Times brass chose to stay mum. The indictment said there was an entire group at The Epoch Times that took part in the alleged money laundering scheme. Notably, Tang and Fakkert declined to answer questions about whether they were aware of the alleged scheme.

There are a combination of factors that are dragging down some artists' ticket sales. Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales. But there are no guarantees that any of that will translate to hard ticket sales. "Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales." Hiccups are not all about ticket sales, either.

At about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a federal prosecutor, Derek Hines, brandished the headliner in question — Mr. Biden’s notorious laptop, a silver Apple MacBook Pro encased in a plastic cover. He waggled it about with his left hand while reminding a government witness, Erika Jensen, an F.B.I. special agent, of all the data that had been seized during the Department of Justice’s investigation of Mr. Biden. The jurors and courtroom spectators gazed at government Exhibit 16 as if expecting sparks to fly from it. Three seconds later, Mr. Hines returned the laptop to the prosecutors’ table, soon to be buried under a heap of other government evidence.

Washington CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland appeared defiant Tuesday as he spent hours fielding questions from lawmakers on a range of topics, occasionally sparring with Republican House members seeking to use his testimony to attack the Justice Department. “These repeated attacks on the Justice Department are unprecedented, and they are unfounded,” he told lawmakers. “I will not be intimidated, and the Justice Department will not be intimidated. “It is not the fault of the Department of Justice that Donald Trump has surrounded himself with criminals,” Lieu said. “Trump brought that upon himself.”Lieu also noted that President Biden’s son Hunter is being prosecuted “in federal court right now” by Garland’s Justice Department.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland testifies before the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, June 4, 2024. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday hit back at House Republicans threatening to hold him in contempt, calling their efforts part of a wave of "unprecedented and unfounded" attacks against the Department of Justice. "I will not be intimidated," Garland said in his testimony at the start of a hearing before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary panel's hearing Tuesday morning was billed as an examination of how the DOJ under Garland has become "politicized and weaponized." "Guys, I'm starting to think you're in a cult," Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., told the committee's Republicans at one point.

Cannon is planning on holding a sprawling hearing on Trump’s request to declare Jack Smith’s appointment as special counsel invalid, signaling she could be more willing than any other trial judge to veto the special prosecutor’s authority. Wednesday, Cannon went further, adding a hearing on a gag order request from prosecutors to limit Trump’s rhetoric about law enforcement and allotting more time to hear arguments on the special counsel issue. Cannon’s signal of willingness to entertain challenges to the special counsel comes in the same week Republicans are bearing down on Attorney General Merrick Garland for his use of special counsels. A third group says the Department of Justice’s use of a special counsel should be upheld. Cannon still agreed to the hearing Trump wanted.

The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur
  + stars: | 2024-06-03 | by ( Dakin Campbell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +45 min
On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

That is how we should understand Trump’s ranting in the wake of his 34 felony convictions last week. And as if to underline Biden’s refusal to interfere in Justice Department decisions, the federal prosecution of the president’s son Hunter Biden begins this week. In spinning this fantasy about Biden, Trump is telegraphing that, should he return to the White House, he will try to use the Justice Department in exactly the way he’s pretending it was used against him. In his telling, he never called for Hillary Clinton to be imprisoned, and magnanimously resisted the entreaties of others to punish her. “According to Sessions, the President asked him to reverse his recusal so that Sessions could direct the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute Hillary Clinton,” the Mueller report said.

The DOJ clapped back against the groups in a legal filing late last week, arguing that releasing the audio could ignite an AI-powered, deepfake frenzy. Though a full transcript of the Biden-Hur interview was released in March, Republicans have been demanding the DOJ release the audio recordings. Nearly a dozen news outlets, including Business Insider, have also sued to get the audio released, Politico reported. A politics and national security expert previously told Business Insider that Republicans could, for example, use the tapes as "raw material for campaign ads."

Opinion | Hunter Biden Should Take a Plea Deal. Quickly.
  + stars: | 2024-06-02 | by ( Sarah Isgur | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on three felony gun charges in a trial that is set to begin in Wilmington, Del., on Monday. In the meantime, his father is behind in many polls, his financial benefactor is reportedly “tapped out” and his best legal arguments require gutting federal gun control laws. An early plea agreement — in which he agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enter into a deferred prosecution agreement on the gun charges — fell apart last summer. But a criminal defendant can accept a plea deal from the prosecution anytime before the jury returns its verdict, which means that he might still have a chance to avoid a full trial. In practice, this means that once the Department of Justice has indicted you, they believe they will win.

A retired four-star U.S. Navy admiral, who was once the military branch's second-highest-ranking officer, was arrested on Friday for a bribery scheme with two tech CEOs, the Department of Justice announced. In 2021, Burke allegedly told his staff to award Kim and Messenger a $355,000 military contract. In exchange, Kim and Messenger allegedly promised Burke employment at their company in the future. According to Parlatore, Burke only worked at Next Jump for a couple of months and left the organization in part due to "personality conflicts." Though the Fat Leonard scheme is not directly connected to Burke's case, Parlatore side-eyed the DOJ's timing in bringing Burke's bribery charges.

The term "Asian American" was first coined in 1968 amid the rising voices of the Third World Liberation Front student movements in California. With tensions from protests against the Vietnam War and calls for universities to invest in ethnic studies programs, the Asian American identity was born out of advocacy for multiethnic unity among the Asian diaspora. Historical photographs showcase the history of Asian American resistance movements from the 1960s to the 1980s, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the Asian American community among tenants, students, and laborers. For the next five years, Filipino and Mexican American workers continued to strike for economic justice for all farm workers. In August 2022, FBI agents executed a search warrant on Trump's Mar-a-Lago home, prompting a furious reaction from Trump and his allies. The search appeared to be over material that Trump brought back to Florida after leaving the White House, spurring a federal investigation linked to the Presidential Records Act. In June 2023, Justice Department prosecutors charged Trump with 37 criminal counts, alleging he withheld classified records from the government after leaving office and attempted to obstruct their return.

Washington CNN —Boeing is expected to release a plan this week to fix its endless string of safety issues that have been under federal investigation following a midflight fuselage blowout in January. Since then, the FAA and Boeing have met multiple times about the company’s progress and the plan’s scope. If the jury agrees, Trump would become a convicted felon, and could face up to four years in prison. But Trump’s defense attorneys will have much to say Tuesday about the evidence presented by prosecutors in an attempt to avoid that outcome. As to ledgers and invoices keeping track of these checks, Trump is the owner of the organization, not the bookkeeper or finance person. Cohen claims Trump was with the bodyguard at the time, and that he handed Trump the phone. The evidence shows that in order for checks to be issued to Cohen, Trump would have had to give his approval.

Prosecutors in Donald Trump's classified documents case in Florida asked a federal judge on Friday to block the former president from making public statements that pose "a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents" investigating and prosecuting the case. The Trump campaign also claimed in a fundraising email that President Joe Biden was "locked & loaded ready to take me out" during a search of his Mar-a-Lago property for classified documents. In making the allegations, Trump and his campaign appeared to be citing recently unsealed court filings related to the 2022 search. In making the request, prosecutors are asking for Trump to face higher stakes if he makes statements that the court finds endangers law enforcement. "Repeated attempts to silence President Trump during the presidential campaign are blatant attempts to interfere in the election," campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung wrote.

CNN —A doping case involving 23 Chinese swimmers took a diplomatic twist on Wednesday after US lawmakers called on the US Department of Justice and the International Olympic Committee to launch inquiries into the controversy. The Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned performance-enhancing substance, several months before the Tokyo Olympics – a tournament at which they were allowed to compete in, and went on to win medals at, according to a report from the New York Times released in coordination with German public broadcaster ARD. In a statement released Wednesday, the lawmakers called for an assessment as to whether the alleged doping was “state-sponsored,” adding that could warrant further diplomatic measures by the United States and the international community.
