China test-fired an ICBM this week, launching it into the Pacific Ocean for the first time in over 40 years. Though it was anything but, China's Ministry of Defense said the test launch was "routine." China's intercontinental ballistic missile test on Wednesday was its first in the Pacific in over 40 years. China's ICBM test comes less than a week before the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. CNN —People in the United States can now order more free Covid-19 tests from the federal government as the country heads into respiratory virus season with high levels of the coronavirus already circulating. “Reopening this popular program is the latest step by the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that over-the-counter COVID-19 tests are available to all who want them this fall and winter,” HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell said in a statement. More information about ordering these tests is available at ACL.gov/AccessibleTests. The CDC also recommends that everyone age 6 months or older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine this season to stay up to date. The updated Covid-19 vaccines are available now at pharmacies across the US and can be received at the same time as the annual flu vaccine.

I compared pumpkin pies from Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, and Costco. I taste-tested pumpkin pies from four different grocery stores near me. Molly AllenAs a professional baker, I know how to make a solid pumpkin pie at home — but sometimes grabbing one from a local grocery store is the best option. Because pumpkin pies are typically made with a custard filling, which contains milk and eggs, the USDA recommends keeping them refrigerated. At the Costco and Safeway, I went to, the pumpkin pies were kept in a refrigerated area.

Sometimes status at work is based on the "right" things, like having relevant skills or past experience. Note: Don't ask, "Do I have status here?" It's a vague-sounding question, and you might not get an honest answer because the person you're asking may think it's rude to say no. Your workplace has experienced a major joltSometimes you fail to get promoted because a jolt has disrupted the status hierarchy. If you've experienced a jolt at work: Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

CEO Satya Nadella and his senior leadership team held executive reviews this summer to consider options that included repackaging new AI features into existing licenses or creating a more expensive bundle with AI capabilities. Other changes Microsoft is considering for its 365 software bundles is a new suite just for security features, the people also said. In recent months, some customers and investors have begun to question the value of generative AI technology, including Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant tool. That's in addition to the monthly cost of Microsoft's 365 software bundles.

These incidents over the past few weeks highlight how US rivals and foes are increasingly challenging the American-led global order as threats multiply worldwide. Russia, Iran, China, and North Korea have deepened their security ties as they simultaneously present Washington and its allies with new dilemmas that strain the US military. North Korea has remained firmly committed to maintaining its nuclear status and strengthening its arsenal despite intense international pressure. Much to the frustration of the US and its Western allies, North Korea has provided artillery and missiles.

Washington CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in a closely watched defamation trial pitting voting technology company Smartmatic against the right-wing cable network Newsmax, in a high-stakes case over the airing of false 2020 election claims. The Newsmax case revolves around the same false claims, championed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, that the 2020 election was rigged by Smartmatic software and others. The Florida-based company sued Newsmax and other right-wing outlets and figures in 2021, alleging that its reputation was destroyed by the lies. The Newsmax case will test the legal limits of publishing lies about the 2020 election, and the trial will play out during the final stretch of the 2024 campaign. ‘Dozens’ of defamatory reportsAfter mainstream news outlets – and even Fox News – projected that Democratic nominee Joe Biden would win the 2020 election, Trump and his surrogates falsely claimed that he won.

The air war is attempting to destroy Hezbollah's long-range missile arsenal, their most threatening weapons for Israelis which Iran provided as a last-resort threat to safeguard its nuclear program. That is one reason it proved reluctant to risk an all-out war between Hezbollah and Israel. Still, it's possible that the destruction of its Hezbollah missile deterrent will convince Iranian officials to build nuclear weapons faster as the ultimate deterrent. Researchers at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi have developed a high-tech solution to searching huge, arid areas for potential archaeological sites. Traditionally, archaeologists use ground surveys to detect potential sites of interest, but that can be time-consuming and difficult in harsh terrains like the desert. “Once it was trained, it gave us an indication of other potential areas (nearby) that are still not excavated,” says Francis. Khalifa University isn’t alone in using artificial intelligence to detect potential sites. If archaeologists find the structures the algorithm has predicted, Dubai Culture plans to use the technology to unearth more sites.

The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay. "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement. "The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the book," Khan said. In a complaint, the FTC said that DoNotPay, which touted its AI service as "the world's first robot lawyer," failed to live up to that claim. "Since about 2023, Defendants' deceptive sales pitch has said their business model is powered by artificial intelligence ("AI")," the suit says.

Clinique's moisturizer looked and felt very sheer. I bought a smaller jar to test out Clinique's moisturizer since it was so expensive. Jen GlantzSince the 2.5-ounce jar of Clinique's moisturizer was on the pricey side, and I wasn't sure I'd like it, I purchased a smaller 0.05-ounce container for $17. But the label says the product is fragrance-free and the odor wasn't noticeable after about 30 minutes. My skin felt more matte than wet, which is what I'd prefer.

Read previewThe US military has published photos for the first time that show a fifth-generation F-35 fighter armed with a stealthy long-range anti-ship missile. The photo, released on Monday, shows an F-35C Lightning II carrying two AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASMs) during a flight test conducted earlier this month. Efforts to integrate the missile with the carrier-based variant of the advanced F-35 stealth fighter underscore the military's push to expand its anti-ship capabilities across new platforms. The military has acknowledged an increasing need for these capabilities, particularly as rivals like China strengthen their navies. The F-35 doesn't have a dedicated anti-ship missile, making the LRASM a valuable addition.

Tokyo CNN —A pair of blood-spattered trousers in a miso tank and an allegedly forced confession helped send Iwao Hakamata to death row more than five decades ago. Now, the world’s longest-serving death row convict has a chance to clear his name. During the retrial, Hakamata’s lawyers argued new information proved his innocence, while prosecutors claimed there was enough evidence to confirm he should be hanged for the crime. Hong Kong CNN —China says it successfully fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, a rare public test that comes amid growing tensions with the United States and its regional allies. An ICBM carrying a dummy warhead was launched at 8:44 a.m. Beijing time and fell into a designated area in the high seas of the Pacific Ocean, the Chinese Defense Ministry said in a statement. This is the first time China has publicly announced a successful ICBM test in the Pacific Ocean in more than four decades. In 1980, China celebrated the successful test of its first ICBM, fired into the South Pacific from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the country’s northwestern desert. China held more than 500 operational nuclear warheads as of 2023 and will probably have over 1,000 warheads by 2030, the Pentagon said in its annual report on Beijing’s military last year.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.
