2 Georgia to fourth-ranked Alabama might have acted as a de facto knockout game. The College Football Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams this season has left more margin for error for teams with national title ambitions that play in the sport’s four most powerful conferences. But that doesn’t mean the stakes are necessarily lower for Saturday’s meeting of undefeated Southeastern Conference rivals (7:30 p.m. But Georgia also has imperfections, such as its 74th-ranked third-down conversion rate, its 81st-ranked third-down defense and its numerous penalties. Dating to 2008, Alabama has won eight of the last nine games against Georgia.

CNN —The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it’s lodging an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after an independent tribunal found world No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner wasn’t at fault for twice testing positive for a banned substance in March 2024. In a statement posted on social media in August, Sinner said the positive tests stemmed from “inadvertent contamination of Clostebol” through treatment from his physiotherapist. … The physiotherapist treated Jannik without gloves and coupled with various skin lesions on Jannik’s body caused the inadvertent contamination.”WADA announced that it is appealing the decision that cleared Sinner after he tested positive for a banned substance. As WADA announced its appeal on Saturday, he was playing in the round of 16 at the China Open where he defeated Roman Safiullin.

Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo was dismissed Thursday by the Red Bull Racing junior team effectively immediately, ending his second stint in the sport with an unusual mid-season departure. The move comes as the once-dominant Red Bull faces fresh struggles in the 2024 championship, and difficult questions about its future. The RB team is known for auditioning potential candidates to promote to the senior Red Bull team. Ricciardo began driving for the Red Bull junior team in 2011 before getting promoted to the senior team in 2014. Mekies welcomed Lawson, who has impressed leaders of the Red Bull team while occasionally subbing in for one of its drivers.

That means that after the 2029 Super Bowl, the NFL has the right to completely rejigger the media landscape, if it so chooses. NFL games last year were 93 of the top 100 most-watched TV broadcasts. But I also know that some legacy media executives are already thinking about 2029 and brainstorming internally about how they can afford to compete against the tech giants for NFL games. The NBA, in its most recent rights deal, only wanted three media packages to help with consumer confusion and subscription fatigue. Given how popular NFL games are versus everything else on TV, the architecture of the NFL rights is the single biggest decision in the American media industry.

CNN —For Shannon Rowbury, it was simultaneously one of the best and worst moments of her running career. Today, the women’s 1,500-meter final at the London 2012 Olympics is considered one of the dirtiest races in the history of track and field. Her US teammate, Alysia Montaño, also discovered this year that, having originally placed fifth in the 800 meters, she is now set to receive a bronze medal from the London Olympics due to doping violations by rivals. Now, she is learning to appreciate those things in ways that didn’t seem possible when she was a professional athlete. “I had kind of cut out all of the fun by the end, it felt like,” says Rowbury.

I wanted to taste a descendant of those ancient peppers, Peru’s native ají amarillo. Now it was time to learn how this distillation of ají amarillo manifested in local dishes. I felt as if this might be the closest I’d yet come to really tasting ají amarillo, its frank optimism, its essence as a fruit. The ají amarillo sauce was frozen into a shimmery yellow dust that turned to leche de tigre on the plate. Then came the soup, made of ají amarillo gone long on the stove with fish stock and fermented corn.

Nearly 1 in 3 Americans may have an undiagnosed iron deficiency, a problem that can lead to fatigue, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, a new study suggests. An analysis of data from more than 8,000 adults in the U.S. revealed that 14% had low iron blood levels, a condition known as absolute iron deficiency, while 15% had the right iron levels but their bodies couldn’t use the essential mineral properly, known as functional iron deficiency, according to the report published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. Doctors don’t typically screen adults for iron deficiency, which is why the condition has been overlooked in many people. There had been hints in other studies suggesting iron deficiency might be more widespread than doctors assume. The rates of iron deficiency between men and women are more similar after the age of menopause, experts said.

LOS ANGELES — When Simone Biles won her first world championship in 2013, her agent at the time asked her a seminal question: What did she hope to accomplish in the sport of gymnastics? Olympic gold medals may have come up, but one of the wish list items Biles remembers most fondly was a long-held desire to have her own tour across the U.S.Like many of her goals, it has come to fruition in spectacular fashion. In the decade since she first pondered her aspirations in the sport, Biles has won 11 Olympic medals and 30 world championship medals, making her the most decorated gymnast in history. After her tour de force showing at the Paris Olympics this summer, she is making the rounds to 30 American cities to connect and celebrate with the fans who cheered her to greatness from home. It’s called the Gold Over America Tour, which can be abbreviated, appropriately, as “GOAT.”“It’s really about sharing that love and passion for the sport with the audience,” Biles said backstage before Friday’s Los Angeles show.

CNN —American gymnast Jordan Chiles’ legal team has submitted a new application in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland over the decision that led to her losing an Olympic bronze medal, pointing toward new video evidence that Chiles’ lawyers say proves her case. Chiles’ attorneys say that a documentary crew has video and audio recordings to prove Chiles’ case. Romanian gymnast Ana Bǎrbosu appeared to have locked up the bronze medal after Chiles finished her routine. That decision led to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) handing the bronze medal to Bǎrbosu. Georgia is favored over Alabama for the fourth straight time Saturday, but another loss would be three losses in those four games. A loss would turn the conversation from “Kirby Smart had a Nick Saban problem” to “Georgia has an Alabama problem.”Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. It certainly was in last year’s SEC Championship Game and likely will be again this weekend. But an Alabama win would elevate his status early in his tenure, so in that regard, there’s a lot to gain.
